Kenya: St. Lawrence University
The St. Lawrence University Program in Kenya offers an intensive, cross-cultural learning opportunity by carefully blending classroom and academic field experiences. The program balances the study of urban and rural areas, cultural diversity, and environmental issues. Course topics include Kenyan peoples and cultures, women's studies, philosophy, political science, religion, environmental resource management, history, sociology, and Kiswahili, the national language. Field studies, concentrating on pastoralist culture and economics, culminate in a one-month internship or a field course culminating in a major research project. Students are housed in homestays in three different ethnic groups and geographical regions. BRIGHT, Program Adviser.
Kenya: Wildlife Management Studies (School for Field Studies) (SFS)
The SFS program in Kenya focuses on the search for ecologically appropriate solutions to the conflict between food production for Kenya's rapidly increasing numbers of people and the long-term viability of its irreplaceable wild animal populations. A wide selection of classes is offered in wildlife ecology and management, sustainable development, and environmental policy, featuring a combination of lectures, field study, and research. Every student completes and presents an individually directed research project. Students are housed in a rustic base-camp, fully equipped for group living and studying, located on a game ranch on the high plains forty minutes from Nairobi. BRIGHT, Program Adviser.

Overseas and Off-Campus Programs
Overseas and other off-campus programs form an integral part of the total educational experience at the College. They support and enhance on-campus curricula and provide unique academic and experiential opportunities abroad. The purpose of overseas programs is to immerse students in a foreign culture so that they may become informed firsthand of the host country’s history, culture, and contemporary issues. In the process, they gain insights into their own culture by comparing and contrasting American institutions and values with those of the host country. In addition, programs provide students with academic knowledge and experience related to specific fields of study not available on campus.

Following on the success of this pilot activity, WorLD expanded to an additional eight schools, which went online in February 1998. The World Bank-financed Education and Human Resources Development Project has contributed in making financial resources available for the rehabilitation and networking of computer labs, as well as providing initial computer literacy training to our participants. World Links has since expanded to 40 schools throughout the country, with eleven more schools expected to join in the next year. 320 teachers have received formal World Links training, and 500 additional teachers have been trained locally, with over 20,000 students now involved in World Links activities. The great success of World Links in Senegal has led to the creation of four regional training centres, and Senegal has become the regional focal point for expanded World Links activities in West Africa.

Statement on the importance of legal records

Summary of institutional commitments
History
The African Archives cooperative projects began in 1993. Dr. Dennis Galvan, then a graduate student at the University of California-Berkeley, submitted a proposal to CAMP to film Senegalese regional court records . Between 1993 and 1995, research and reconnaissance trips to West Africa by Africana Librarians and historians culminated in a decision by Title VI Africana librarians (in consultation with Center directors) to proceed on a pilot project in cooperation with the National Archives of Senegal. In July 1995, Dr. Joseph Caruso (Columbia University) traveled to Senegal to carry out a trip on behalf of the Title VI libraries. The primary goal was to assess the potential for cooperative preservation and acquisition projects. Dr. Caruso toured various archives and research libraries in Dakar and Saint Louis. He met with archivists, library directors, other librarians, film technicians, researchers, and others. The trip resulted in the identification and selection of the National Archives as a partner to preserve a collection of French colonial court records. [

A statement on the importance of unclassified legal records: Unclassified colonial legal records are particularly important for studying the history and development of Africa. As oral history sources become increasingly rare, court documents have emerged as increasingly important alternative primary resources in reconstructing the social, cultural and structural changes wrought by colonial expansion and domination in Africa. Documents on legal activities reflect the relationship between colonizer and colony. As French colonial practice was geared to more direct (authoritarian) rule than the British, often ignoring or subverting African authority in local matters, the court and legal proceedings demonstrate the conflict between the "principles of French civilization" and the realities of African social structure and cultural practice. From civil matters to administrative law, the records are important sources of material for social scientist and historian alike. Although court records are notoriously fragmentary throughout the continent, in Senegal local and expatriate researchers are fortunate to have at their disposal a rather rich body of legal records, including actual case materials and testimonies dating back to the mid-19th century. Until recently, this body of evidence was thought restricted mainly to the activities of the various metropolitan courts of the Four Communes of Senegal (Goree, Saint-Louis, Dakar, and Rufisque), the communities in which French citizenship rights were partially extended to African inhabitants. Litigants in these courts tended to be Europeans or individuals who through marriage, commerce or education had had varying degrees of contact with European institutions and culture. When we examine court records from the Four Communes, we are examining a very distinctive slice of the overall encounter between Africans and colonial institutions - the
