Searching with Kids Sit down with your child, try a search at a few of these sites, then bookmark your favorites. Each of these search sites attempts to link only to safe sites, but adult supervision is still the most important key to using the Internet with children. Yahooligans! is a searchable, browsable index of the Internet designed for Web surfers ages 7 to 12. Only sites judged appropriate for this age group are chosen. Ask Jeeves allows kids to ask complete questions using plain English. Sites are filtered using SurfWatch to block access to many inappropriate Web sites. KidsClick is a portal (a collection of sites grouped by subject or topic.) This is the first place I go to find elementary school curriculum sites. Searches can be refined by reading level and amount of graphics. The Smart Zone is a very selective catalog of educational sites gathered and monitored for safety by Ed View. Searches can be refined by choosing elementary, middle or high school. AltaVista, a powerful adult search engine, has a "Family Safe Search" that allows filtered Web searching. Once you have set this capability from your computer a password is required to conduct non-filtered searches.

The Internet contains a vast amount of resources, making it an excellent research tool for kids. However, there's a lot of inappropriate material on the web. Safe Sites for Kids
You may have heard many scary stories about what is available on the Web. You may have inadvertently come across some objectionable sites in your own surfing. The news media seems to delight in reporting on all the bad sites, particularly sites with objectionable pictures and messages. Indeed, there are many places on the Web that we do not want our students to visit. You also know that there must be many good sites, with learning and entertainment opportunities that are appropriate for a child. You may be asking yourself:
    • Is it safe for me to let my students surf on the Web? How do I find those good sites?
    Something to consider
Let's de-mystify the Web a little by comparing it to other ways we get information. Ask yourself:
    • Of all the material there is available in print, how much of it would you give an elementary school child to read? What percentage would you think of as educational? Of all the videos available, how many are appropriate for an elementary school child to view? What percentage of videos offer real learning opportunities?
The fact is, the Web is just like going into a bookstore or a video store. There are things there we would let our students look at, and things we would not want them to see.

    About
Kids.net.au is a non profit search engine just for kids, which is operated by volunteers. Searching sites that are fun, educational, and child safe. Topics include games, sports, school, entertainment, news, family, hobbies, pre-school and arts. The database of sites is collected from user suggestions, however most sites are obtained from the open directory project ( dmoz.org Kids.net.au first went online in July of 2002. Since then the search engine has grown into a resource of over 20,000 child safe sites. On a good day the site may have over 1000 visitors. About 55.2 % percent of our visitors are from Australia, 28.1 % from the USA, 5 % from Canada, 2.5 % from England, 1 % from Hong Kong, and 1 % from New Zealand. The rest of the visitors are from a mix of Sweden, South Korea, Italy, Germany, India, France, Israel, Netherlands, Singapore, Japan, Spain, Cocos Islands, Denmark, Brazil, Iran, Philippines, Estonia, Switzerland and South Africa (to name a few...). For all those tech heads, Kids.net.au started life on a server in Australia with only 64 kbit/sec bandwidth, but none the less the site was online, and suited us just fine during those early days. These days however, the site is hosted in the United States right on top of the backbone - It's real fast!!!

ResearchBuzz Articles: Kid-Safe Searching You'd think that the Internet would be the best thing for kid's homework since the public library or encyclopedias. But at the same time, you might have some understandable concerns about using public search engines for your kids to find help with their homework online. They might find entirely more than you or your kid bargained for. There are many places online, however, that your kids can search safely. Let's take a look. WARNING - Before we get into this, let me say that no number of kid-safe search engines are a substitute for the supervision of an adult. When your kid's online, spend some time and help them search. Furthermore, while kid-safe sites link to sites which are good for kids, you don't know where those sites are linking to. Again, spend the time and go searching with your kid.
