What is Louisiana Sea Grant? A federal-state partnership based at Louisiana State University , the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program fosters the stewardship of coastal and marine resources through varied research, education, outreach, and technology transfer actvities. The program belongs to a 30-member network of university-based programs with similar missions, maintained by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Because all Sea Grant programs have a similar mission, they all support research and outreach on similar topics. Their websites may be searched through the National Sea Grant Network of Web Sites Search Our Mission The Louisiana Sea Grant College Program develops fundamental knowledge, technology, trained personnel, and public awareness to advance the sustainable use of coastal and marine resources and environments. Sea Grant projects engage university expertise in the natural and social sciences, engineering, law and other disciplines to address the information needs of public agencies, business firms, and individuals. Fisheries
Recreational and commercial fisheries are a vital part
of Michigan's heritage. Each year more than 1.4
million licensed anglers fish the state's Great Lakes
waters, catching species such as salmon (an introduced species), walleye, perch, small mouth bass, steelhead and trout. Commercial species vary with each lake and may include such fish as lake whitefish, rainbow smelt, lake herring, and yellow perch. Combined, sport and commercial fisheries in the Great Lakes are valued at more than $4 billion annually. The health of our fisheries depends upon continuing research and education. Fish populations change in response to such factors as aquatic nuisance species, habitat loss and pollution. Michigan Sea Grant conducts scientific research aimed at understanding fish populations in order to provide a basis for sound fishery management. Sea Grant's extension agents located around the state conduct regional fishery workshops to convey up-to-date research information, provide training and technical assistance to fishery businesses, and work to foster continued cooperation among a variety of user groups.

The mission of the Rhode Island Sea Grant Sustainable Fisheries Extension Program is to stabilize and improve the lives of the people associated with the seafood industry through applied research, outreach, and education. This broad mission encompasses use and sustainability issues associated with the living resources of the marine environment, as well as the people affected by these issues through seafood production or environmental concerns. Fisheries Extension provides a link between researchers, commercial and recreational fishermen, and regulators by bringing scientific and technical information to user groups, and in turn informing researchers of user needs and priorities. Fisheries Extension deals with capture fisheries, and seafood quality and safety. The Sea Grant Sustainable Fisheries Extension program is currently based in the College of Environment and Life Sciences at URI, in the department of

Rhode Island Sea Grant researchers and Fisheries Extension has a 30-year history working with fishermen, regulators, aquaculturists, seafood handlers and processors and others to improve fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood safety and quality. This timeline presents the broad expertise Fisheries Extension offers. Early 1970s Researchers helped fishermen catch the most possible fish with the least consumption of fuel by increasing size of fishing net opening to increase capacity and reduce drag. URI 340 fishing net, created at University of Rhode Island Bay Campus, one of the biggest breakthroughs in fishing gear technology. Held annual Fishermen's Forums, teaching hundreds of New England fishermen about the latest fishing techniques and equipment, and legal, financial and resource issues. Introduced successful European fishing techniques to New England.

April 2000: Fisheries Past Topics Press Releases Fisheries have historically played a large role in the Northeastern United States, both economically and culturally. In recent years, depleted stocks of once abundant species and regulations imposed to bring back those stocks have seriously impacted commercial fishermen through closures, days-at-sea restriction, vessel buyouts, and other mandated effort controls. Such effects have also severely impacted whole communities in which fishing has been a way of life. Now, however, depleted stocks seem poised for a rebound, and the industry and communities that they support are at a crossroads. more Back to School with Bluefin Tuna: A New Approach to Stock Assessment

Commercial Fishing Show Features Research Results For Immediate Release Jan. 12, 2003 Contact: Katie Mosher
Visitors to this year's N.C. Commercial Fishing Show can take a break from researching the latest in fishing equipment and services to learn about the latest research from the North Carolina Fishery Resource Grant (FRG) and the North Carolina Blue Crab Research programs. The 23 rd Annual N.C. Commercial Fishing Show will be held at the Riverfront Convention Center in New Bern Feb. 22 - 23. The show is a hosted by the N.C. Fisheries Association (NCFA). In addition to vendors, educational exhibits will include programs such as North Carolina Sea Grant. Seminars on Saturday, Feb. 22 will feature results from FRG and the Blue Crab projects. The program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The seminars have been well received in the past, according to Sea Grant fisheries specialist Bob Hines. "They are an opportunity for the general public— and fishing families in particular — to learn about the results from FRG and Blue Crab projects," he says. Funded by the North Carolina General Assembly, the Blue Crab and FRG programs are administered by North Carolina Sea Grant. Both programs seek to involve people who make a living in fishing industries in projects that explore ways to improve and protect the state's fishery resources. Frequently, projects are collaborative efforts with academic researchers.

In addition to seeing what's new in fishing equipment and services, visitors to this year's N.C. Commercial Fishing Show can learn the latest on the state of the state's fisheries in forums highlighting projects by the N.C. Fishery Resource Grant Program (FRG). The event — held at the New Bern Riverfront Conference Center Feb. 23 and 24 — also will offer a national perspective from Bill Hogarth of the National Marine Fisheries Service. Hogarth formerly served as head of the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries. FRG, which is administered by North Carolina Sea Grant, provides funding to people who make a living in fishing industries. The program often pairs grant recipients with academic researchers. Sea Grant fisheries specialist Bob Hines says the seminars have been so popular in the past that they have been expanded to two days this year. "The seminars are an ideal way of extending these projects to the fishing community," he says. Among the featured FRG projects are studies in:
  • Bycatch in the white perch gill net fishery in the upper Currituck Sound emphasizing nontargeted catch of striped bass.
