The Unit's major publications have been The Scottish Government Yearbook, which began in 1976/7, and, its replacement in 1992, the quarterly journal, Scottish Affairs The Unit's purpose is to study Scottish government and politics, and it draws on diverse disciplines, notably in Law and Social Sciences. The current convener, since 1988, is David McCrone , Professor of Sociology at the University of Edinburgh. The vice-conveners are Alice Brown , Professor of Politics, and Lindsay Paterson , Professor of Educational Policy. At the centre of the Unit's work is the study of policy-making and the political process in Scotland, set in a broad comparative and international context. The Unit is a leader in the study and teaching of Scottish government and politics and is of the highest academic standing. It has experience of carrying out a range of funded research for the Economic and Social Research Council, the Leverhulme Trust, the Rowntree Reform Trust and the Equal Opportunities Commission. The Unit has high-quality expertise in social sciences and law and, because it is located in a major research university, it has access to excellent facilities.
