Reference materials provide quick answers on a variety of subjects. The UNF Library's Reference Collection should have specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, and handbooks for nearly any subject you want to cover. The following materials are particularly useful for gathering information on science fiction and fantasy. You should also use the library's catalog to search for more specific areas. For example, if you are looking into women science fiction writers, try looking for the keywords "women" and "science fiction " in the WebLUIS advanced search screen. You can also limit the search to the Reference Collection by choosing Reference from the Location pull-down option.

Top 100 Sci Fi Sites
- OFFSITE
This list is an attempt to list the most famous and influential science fiction/fantasy writers. Although this list certainly includes the giants of the field, such as Asimov, Heinlein, Card, and Clarke, it does not necessarily include all writers of outstanding literary merit. Some of the "famous" science fiction and fantasy writers on this list may be included because they have been particularly prolific or have had significant influence on the field. Obviously this is a somewhat subjective list, but a large variety of resources have been consulted : awards lists, historical commentaries, university literature course materials, best seller lists, internet portals and other web sites, etc. Most of these references have been summarized on Famous Science Fiction Authors Page 2 A few people are included on this list because they are very famous and they have written science fiction/fantasy, but they aren't necessarily famous primarily for their SF/F writing. The authors in this category are Carl Sagan, Anne Perry, G. K. Chesterton, Stephen King, George Lucas, Richard Dreyfuss, Deepak Chopra, Glen A. Larson, J. Michael Straczynski and Andrew Greeley.

Welcome! There are many GLBT connections to Science Fiction Fantasy Horror , and y Literature Gothic Horror's founders were gay : Walpole, Lewis, and Beckford; and so is the modern master, Clive Barker. Several landmark works are by gay authors (Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray , James's Turn of the Screw , Stoker's Dracula , Barrie's Peter Pan , Howard's Conan ). GLBT authors sometimes write about non-gay characters with a special resonance (Woolrich's I Married a Dead Man ), while straight-identified writers include key GLBT figures (Jackson's Haunting of Hill House ). Alternative sexualities have also inspired a vital tradition (LeGuin's Left Hand of Darkness ). In the past, GLBTs were villains or monsters, but increasingly their roles have become more diverse, complex, and open. suggest what should be included or omitted. Associated with Chapters.Indigo.ca . and Alibris - Books You Thought You'd Never Find Over the last 40 years Canada has enjoyed an amazing growth of Fantastic Literature writers. In 1959 Phyllis Gotleib was Canada's only regularly published SF author. Since then the list has grown to the Authors listed in this guide plus many that I've missed. The term "Canadian Fantastic Literature" covers the genres science fiction, fantasy and horror. In Canada it is quite common for science fiction authors to also write fantasy or for fantasy authors to also write horror. It is also common for Canadian mainstream authors to write a fantastic story or two without fear of being labeled a genre author. In fact some of Canada's most distinguished authors, like Margaret Atwood Robertson Davies and Timothy Findlay have crossed the border to the fantastic on occasion. Because of these facts, I have veered slightly from my Science Fiction theme and have included fantasy and horror authors in this guide. A quick note for any published fantastic literature authors reading this guide: If you are not listed and would like to be or if you are listed and would like to add to, correct or delete anything I've written, please use Email me at
