School Bus Safety School bus safety is a significant factor in our school system that is often overlooked. It is important for students and parents to follow these important safety tips. For Students:
  • Be on time. Never run to or from the bus. Stand back from the curb. Don't push or shove. Stay in your seat. Don't yell or shout. Always obey the driver. Wait for the driver's signal before crossing. Always cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus. Never crawl under a school bus.
For Parents:
  • Make sure your children get to the school bus stop in plenty of time. Discourage loosely fitting and baggy clothing that can get caught in handrails, in swinging doors, and on seats. The most dangerous area is at the loading and unloading areas. Instruct your children to avoid horseplay and to stay back away from the bus until it is okay to board. Instruct your children to remain seated while on the bus, and avoid horseplay or being exceptionally noisy. It is up to seven times safer for children to ride the bus to school vs. riding in the private passenger vehicle. Encourage your children to take the bus. Stop for school buses with red lights flashing...even in the school yard!

School Bus Safety
Updated August 2002 Prepared by Melissa A. Savage, Senior Policy Specialist
Overview
Every week during the school year 23.5 million children begin and end each day with a trip on a school bus. More than 400,000 school buses travel approximately 4.3 billion miles every year. Between 1989 and 1999, an average of 10 passengers were killed each year in school bus crashes. To put this in perspective, during 2001 alone, motor vehicle crashes claimed the lives of approximately 2,000 children between the ages of 5 and 15. These statistics indicate that school buses are very safe. Because of the importance of school bus transportation, NHTSA has established several safety standards to maintain this level of safety. Based on data from school bus crashes, NHTSA is able to determine what types of school bus safety standards are necessary. Specifically, NHTSA has prepared safety standards focusing on the human, vehicle and environmental variables that effect the level of safety associated with school bus transportation. Although NHTSA and several other safety organizations acknowledge that school bus transportation is virtually the safest mode of transportation in the United States, these organizations remain committed to enhancing school bus safety. This commitment requires these organizations to continue the learning process and determine methods of making this safe form of transportation even safer.

see also: Media Release of 25/05/2001 Following community concern over school bus incidents resulting in the death of or serious injury to schoolchildren, the Australian Transport Council (ATC) requested Austroads to:
  • review current practice and research in relation to school bus safety; and to identify new or proven safety measures that may be used as part of a National approach to school bus safety.
As part of the review extensive consultation was undertaken with key internal and external stakeholders and consensus sought with regard to a National School Bus Safety Action Plan. Based on available data, the number of children killed or seriously injured nationally associated with bus travel during school commuting times has steadily fallen from an estimated 14 fatalities and 190 hospitalisations in 1990, to an estimated 4 fatalities and 100 hospitalisations in 1998. Notwithstanding the reductions achieved, across the country about 9 children are seriously injured each month.

Superintendent A Message to Parents: Every day when your child boards a school bus, you as a parent and we as school administrators share a common goal: safety. Discipline is an important part of making sure buses are safe, and we take discipline on our buses as seriously as we take discipline in the classrooms. Bus transportation provided by the Knox County Board of Education is considered to be an extension of the school day. Therefore, just as we expect appropriate behavior in the classroom, we expect appropriate behavior on the bus. In an effort to inform both parents and students of appropriate bus behavior, a committee was formed to develop a uniform bus code. Safety precautions, disciplinary code, and bus rules are included in this document. Please discuss these expectations with your child. Your cooperation will help all of us work together to provide the safest environment possible for the students of Knox County. FOLLOW THESE BUS RULES:
  • Obey the bus driver.

School Bus Safety School bus transportation incidents killed an estimated 169 persons nationwide in the 1995-1996 school year, including 43 students. Injuries reported that year totaled about 19,000, of which 13,000 were students. Most instances in both cases occurred while the students were pedestrians. There are a few rules that you can teach your children to help them get on and off the school bus safely.
  • Stay away from traffic, and avoid disruptive, careless behavior when waiting for the school bus. Do not stray away from the bus stop into alleys, onto streets, or onto private property.
  • Wait until the school bus has stopped and the door opens before stepping onto the roadway.
  • Use the handrail when going up the bus steps.
  • Find a seat and sit down as soon as you can. Loitering can cause distractions to the bus driver.

School Bus Safety
A s the carefree days of summer give way to the hectic back to-school season, parents should take time to teach and review important safety guidelines with their children. Parents may not realize that unintentional injuries and related deaths can happen on the way to and from school. Whether you drive the kids to school or they walk, bike, or ride the bus, take time out to teach and review important safety guidelines with children to get them back to school safely this fall.
School Bus Safety
About 23.5 million students ride school buses daily. Although this is one of the safest ways to travel to and from school, injuries do occur. In 1999, 31 children ages 14 and under were killed in school bus-related traffic crashes. An estimated 7,000 children were injured in school bus-related incidents. More than half of the children killed were pedestrians. Many injuries happen when children are boarding or exiting the bus. A blind spot extends approximately 10 feet in front of the bus, obstructing the driver's view. Children are not aware of this blind spot and might mistakenly believe that if they can see the bus, the bus driver can see them.
While Waiting for the Bus:
Arrive at the stop at least five minutes before the bus arrives.

Secretary Beatty's Letter to Parents
Pupil Transportation in North Carolina ... School Bus Safety Web Every school year, children across North Carolina get hurt and killed at their neighborhood bus stops. Spearheaded by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Crime Control and Public Safety's new "SafeBus North Carolina" program seeks to change that. That's why we've created this web site to pass along some tips on school bus stop safety. Like the "SafeBus" logo says, it will take a team effort to make that happen. Parents, educators, children, and motorists everyone has to take an active part in making sure our kids stay safe in bus loading and unloading zones. "SafeBus" is particularly concerned with stranger danger. Even in our quietest country neighborhoods, we can no longer take for granted that our kids will be safe. In January 1998, a five-year-old Hoke County girl was kidnapped while waiting for the bus in front of her house. She was later found murdered.

Safety of School Buses
The Ontario School Bus Association believes that safety and personal security of the over 800,000 children who are daily in our care are the first priorities of student transportation. According to Transport Canada, the yellow and black school bus is the safest mode of transportation for school children - in terms of construction, driver standards, training, and passenger safety.
The Vehicles
Transport Canada research shows, on a per passenger, per kilometre basis, the occupants of school buses are less likely to be injured in road collisions than the occupants of any other vehicles. Red flashing lights and a stop arm halt traffic in both directions when children are boarding or leaving a school bus. These safety features are not available on any other vehicles. Children sit in specially designed, thickly padded seats that cushion them in event of a collision. These safety features are not required on any other vehicle. Construction and equipment standards for school buses are controlled by more federal and provincial regulations than any other motor vehicle on the road. School buses must meet stringent standards for structural integrity, crash protection, fire retardancy, and emergency equipment.

Senator Byrd's School Safety Resources Across the country, tragedies have been visited upon schools across the country. From Kentucky to Oregon to Colorado, the notion of schools as safe havens has been shattered by the sound of gunfire. These acts are not limited to specific geographic regions or family backgrounds, nor do they have a single catalyst. Those who have committed such heinous acts have done so for different reasons, at different times, in different schools. But these acts of school violence have at least one thing in common they have spurred all of us to take a closer look at what can be done to better protect children at school. Protecting our children is not simply a matter of public policy. It is a matter of strengthening basic values, of teaching children right from wrong, of instilling in them respect for others. We each have a responsibility to work to end youth violence and to keep schools safe for children and for those who teach them. Many West Virginia school districts have implemented new safety initiatives. On this web site, I have compiled information on some of these efforts. Federal
