Kingdom of Saudi Arabia The Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been actively promoting an ambitious food self-sufficiency programme and provides financial incentives and appropriate technical support to the private sector. Aquaculture has been included in this programme and therefore the Ministry of Aquaculture and Water together with the cooperation of F.A.O. established the Fish Farming Centre (FFC) in 1982 on the Red Sea coast, 50 Km north of Jeddah. The Centre is a marine aquaculture research institution which undertakes research and development programmes to identify the most suitable fish and shrimp species for culture and the optimal culture systems suited to the conditions found in the Kingdom. It undertakes the initial research programmes, then scales up to pilot scale to test and demonstrate the production systems and techniques. It has a marine hatchery facility, four culture systems (ponds, pens, cages and tanks), Baobab tilapia culture facility, laboratories and aquarium display area.

September 2002 Since the events of last September 11, Americans have become intensely interested in the Islamic world. Books about Islam and the Middle East are selling out; PBS has rerun its documentary "Islam: Empire of Faith"; a traveling exhibit of Islamic glass has drawn crowds to museums; college students have crowded Arabic language classes. So far, I have seen almost nothing in print about Islamic attitudes toward work. As it happens, this is a matter where I have done some research, so now is probably a good time to convey what I have learned. But I should point out in advance that I feel I have only scratched the surface of this subject. Over the past two years I have been involved in a project to develop a computer-based career information system for a university in Saudi Arabia. The all-male King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals What I found from my research and development efforts was a culture going through some profound transitions.

Corporate Report on Travel to Saudi Arabia
An overview on policies and culture in Saudi Arabia for business travelers. Term Paper #: # of words: # of sources: Format (MLA/APA): APA Written: Price: Hide: Author: dcross Author's background: B.S. Computer Information Systems, MBA Candidate
    Abstract
The paper is presented as a report which provides as an initial review of the culture and society of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The report provides demographics, background and some general recommendations for corporate policy as the company expands its business into the Middle East. Specific recommendations are provided throughout the report to emphasize key points to be addressed in the corporate guidelines to be published at a future date.
    From The Paper
"In 1902, Abdul Aziz Al-Sa'ud and a band of his followers captured the city of Riyadh and placed the city under the control of the Al Saud family. Abdul Aziz spent the next 12 years consolidating the area around Riyadh and the eastern part of the country into the family kingdom. In order to restore law and order in the kingdom, Abdul Aziz implemented a system whereby every sheikh was responsible for his own tribe under the authority of the king who was empowered to intervene to impose law and order. Saudi Arabia subsequently became an absolute monarchy with no political parties. King Fahd, who succeeded in 1982, appoints a Council of Ministers to run day-to-day affairs. A consultative council (Majlis as-Shura), numbering about 60, has been established to advise the monarch; it has no formal powers."

    Christian-Islamic culture clash
Two cases in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia involving the death penalty for adultery and homosexual practices underline the cultural clash between those countries which adopt the Sharia (Islamic Law) and those which do not.
In Nigeria, the thirty-six-year old Safya Husaini is accused of adultery and faces death by stoning. In this case, she will be buried up to her neck and huge stones will be hurled at her head by a baying crowd, whipped into a fury, until her skull is smashed and her brains spill out.
The unforgivable crime of adultery was judged by an Islamic court in
Sokoto, one of the Islamic States of Nigeria, in October 2001 and the
sentence was applied. The application was delayed until she gave birth to her baby daughter but now that she has been born, the stoning may take place at any moment, depriving Safya of her life and her baby of the right to grow up in the care of her mother.
The case is even more shocking because the accusation of adultery , it transpires, is no more than a case of rape, when a friend of Safya’s father decided to have his way with her, and she became pregnant. Various eye-witnesses confirmed this fact.
