Jenadriyah Heritage and Cultural Festival: In 1985, the first Saudi National Heritage and Culture Festival was held in Jenadriyah near Riyadh The annual event organized by the National Guard under the patronage of the King epitomizes Saudi Arabia's commitment to preserving and exploring its cultural heritage. For two weeks out of the year, the festival provides over a million Saudis with a glimpse into the past. A traditional camel race opens the festival which encompasses almost every aspect of Saudi Arabia's culture and heritage. Artisans, such as potters, woodworkers and weavers demonstrate their traditional crafts in small shops with typical palm-frond-roofed porches.
During the course of the festival, folklore troupes perform the Ardha and other national dances, while singers from around the Kingdom perform traditional songs and music. Literary figures from across the country participate in poetry competitions between contemporary poets reciting historic verses. A permanent heritage village has now been erected at Jenadriyah

Please change your bookmarks to http://spleenville.com/journal/ Main July 31, 2002 High Culture in Saudi Arabia They have brought monster truck shows to the Land of Sand. I kid you not. And no, I don't know who "they" are. Quite frankly I suspect the CIA. I've been hard on our nation's "intelligence" sector, but you've got to admit cultural propaganda is difficult to perpetuate in a country where just about anything involving unveiled women in public is a no-no. But there's nothing in the Koran about gigantic motorized machines crashing into each other, apparently. (I'll bet it's in the Book of Revelations, though. I mean, if Demi Moore and Procter and Gamble were in there...) Oh yeah, I forgot I found the link to this gem on Daimnation

Country Profile

Flag of Saudi Arabia Background:
In 1902 Abdul al-Aziz Ibn SAUD captured Riyadh and set out on a 30-year campaign to unify the Arabian peninsula. In the 1930s, the discovery of oil transformed the country. Following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saudi Arabia accepted the Kuwaiti royal family and 400,000 refugees while allowing Western and Arab troops to deploy on its soil for the liberation of Kuwait the following year.
A burgeoning population, aquifer depletion, and an economy largely dependent on petroleum output and prices are all major governmental concerns.

Net use is catching on in Saudi Arabia
By Alfred Hermida
BBC News Online technology staff If you tried to look at Rolling Stone magazine on the web from Saudi Arabia, you would find that access has been denied. You would not have much luck either if you tried the American women's lifestyle site iVillage.com. These sites are among the 2,000 blocked by the Saudi Government, a Harvard Law School has found. Most of the blacklisted sites were sexually explicit or about religion. But also caught in the net were sites about women, health, drugs and pop culture. "We found blockage of quite a bit of content beyond political content and pornography," said Ben Edelman, one of the researchers behind the report. "We found the blocking of content about women's history or sites about bathing suits. So if you want to buy something to swim in, they seem to treat that as if it were pornographic in Saudi Arabia," Mr Edelman told the BBC programme Go Digital.

Mecca, home of the holy Mosque and the Ka'abah Photo courtesy of the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia web site. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia occupies a highly important position in world affairs, as it is both the heartland of Islam and the possessor of the world's largest oil and gas reserves. Comprising most of the Arabian Peninsula, Saudi Arabia covers an area approximately the same size as Western Europe. Over 95 percent of the country is desert, including the world's largest sand desert the Rub al Khali (or "Empty Quarter") in the southeast, and the Nafud which stretches across the northwest of the peninsula. Saudi Arabia is considered to be the birthplace and spiritual center of Islam. Virtually all aspects of Saudi Arabian society are guided by Islamic ideals. The Koran is the basis of Saudi Arabia's constitution, while Shari'ah (Islamic law) is the basis of the country's legal system. Arabic is Saudi Arabia's official language and is considered a holy language by Muslims. Today, the majority of Saudi Arabians are Sunni Muslim, while a Shi'a minority is concentrated in the eastern province.

Travel Center Country Guide: SAUDI ARABIA Business Culture Greetings and Courtesies Business Ethic and Framework Decision Making Women ... Business Attire GREETINGS AND COURTESIES Greetings are effusive, eloquent, and elaborate. Saudis pride themselves on their way with words; they will lavish praise and compliments upon greeting one another. There is also a great deal of touching and hand holding, sometimes even a quick kiss on the cheek (even between men). They love to visit and talk with one another, so greetings are rarely curt; be prepared to stop and visit for a while. If the Saudi is accompanied by a female do not greet or offer your hand; you will probably not even be introduced to her. Saudis are very status conscious; if a Saudi has a title, he expects to be called by it, and foreigners meeting titled Saudis are at a distinct disadvantage unless they hold equivalent titles or rank. BUSINESS ETHIC AND FRAMEWORK The influence of Islam is everywhere and is felt continuously. Men quote the Koran in business discussions, and the government letterhead carries the Islamic creed. Yet Saudi Arabia has made a tremendous effort to keep pace with the twentieth century; and it has had the resources to do so. The result is a combination of ultramodern high-tech and ancient tradition. Family loyalties remain the most powerful force; family cohesion and solidarity are the sources of a Saudi man's all-important courage and honor. It is honorable to display loyalty to the family, and to do work that does not dirty the hands. But loss of honor means loss of all status; so anythingeven lying or killingis sometimes justified in order to save a man's honor. Job security and advancement are generally based on loyalty and family or friendship ties rather than technical competence or managerial performance.

The Military Response ... El Cato
Get Out of Saudi Arabia
by Ivan Eland, Director of Defense Policy Studies, Cato Institute. January 23, 2002 The Bush administration has done a commendable job on a vital task: weakening the Al Qaeda terrorist network and smashing the oppressive Taliban regime that harbored it. In the short-term, the United States must find and eliminate the leadership of both movements and further cripple remaining pockets of Al Qaeda fighters worldwide. In the long-term, Americans must ask why radical Islamists’ hatred of the United States is so great that they would spend money and resources to kill innocent people in a faraway land. Asking this question is sensitive when 3,000 innocent Americans lay dead. But if the United States wants to lessen the chance of future attacks, some of which could make the Sept. 11 strikes look mild, it needs to explore such motivations. The American foreign policy establishment maintains that the United States is the target in almost 50 percent of the world’s terrorist attacks because of “who we are”—that is, our free political and economic system and our unique culture. But the rest of the world can more objectively assess why we are disproportionately attacked. According to a recent survey of political, business, and media elites on five continents, the United States is admired as the land of opportunity and democratic ideals. But a majority of the elites outside the United States said U.S. policies and actions in the world were responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks. In contrast, only a small number of U.S. elites thought so. As for U.S. culture, Osama bin Laden has never railed against pornography, Hollywood movies, or the drug culture, according to Peter Bergen, a CNN correspondent who interviewed Osama bin Laden.
