What It Is Who Gets It ... Links What It Is, What It Isn't Sarcoidosis is a relatively rare autoimmune disease that can affect the skin, lungs, heart, brain and nervous system, eyes, and other organs. Although the disease was first recognized about 100 years ago, little is known about what causes it and there is no cure. As an autoimmune disease, sarcoidosis is similar to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus in how it behaves and how it is treated. Depending on the severity, treatment may be needed to control what sarcoidosis does. Sarcoidosis can go dormant on its own or with treatment, and its symptoms often do not recur after the initial onset. In a small percentage of cases, sarcoidosis is chronic, requiring on-going treatment, with possible occurrence in other organ systems. Chronic sarcoidosis is apparently cyclic in its activity level, with flares of symptoms and more dormant periods lasting weeks or months. No markers have been identified as indicating how sarcoidosis is going to behave in any individual or how an individual with sarcoidosis is going to respond to treatment, although a physician experienced with sarcoidosis may be able to make a "good guess" based on his or her experience. Whether he or she is willing to voice that guess is another story entirely! Despite a century of research, little is known about sarcoidosis. Research has discovered what it is not. Among other things, it is not a cancer or tuberculosis or AIDS-related. It is not caused by pine pollen or other identifiable agents like pollution, airborne or otherwise. It is not progressive or contagious. You did not get it from someone else and you cannot give it to another person. As far as we know, nothing you did specifically caused your sarcoidosis.

After extensive tests I was told I had the disease only in my lungs. The fact that I have this disease amazed my Doctors because according to studies this disease only affects Afro-Americans and Caucasion of European backgrounds especially Scandanavian. I would like to know more information on this disease; I have only been told it is rare. My physician just said that it is a type of lung infection that could go into remission just as it occured. From reading the comments that doesn't seem to be true. September 08, 1999 - Alka

READER COMMENTS Back to Original Summary and Current Reader Comments Jan - Mar, 2002 Apr - Jun, 2002 Jul - Sep, 2002 ... Nov - Dec, 1997 February 24, 1998 - Christopher I have pulmonary sarcoidosis. The more I find out about this disease the more I become scared and anxious. My doctor wants me to start on steroids (prednisone) but I am scared of possible side affects. My questions are; are there support groups in the Buffalo NY area, what are the real side effects of prednisone, where can I get more information? Thank You. February 24, 1998 - Sherri I mainly have a question: My sarcoidosis is seemingly chronic, as I have been plagued now for at least 6 years with continual problems and symptoms without a break; although it does seem to move from organ to organ. Because I have hepatitis C, as well as Sarcoidosis, I can not do the therapies for either one as one therapy can exacerbate the other disease. So if anyone knows of a therapy to do for Sarcoidosis, that will NOT decrease my immune system, it would help me to know. Also - I have been diagnosed now, by a liver biopsy, with it in my liver along with the hepatitis C. I just had a tongue biopsy - as my tongue has had a lesion growing on it, that my dentist suspects sarcoid. I've never heard of that; has anyone else? February 24, 1998 - Ruth

What is the Recommended Dietary Allowance for folate for adults?
The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is the average daily dietary intake level that is sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of nearly all (97 to 98 percent) healthy individuals in each life-stage and gender group (10). The 1998 RDAs for folate are expressed in a term called the Dietary Folate Equivalent. The Dietary Folate Equivalent (DFE) was developed to help account for the differences in absorption of naturally occurring dietary folate and the more bioavailable synthetic folic acid (11). The 1998 RDAs for folate expressed in micrograms (mcg) of DFE for adults are (10): Life Stage Men Women Pregnancy Lactation Ages 19+ 400 mcg 400 mcg All ages 600 mcg 500 mcg I mcg of food folate = 0.6 mcg folic acid from supplements and fortified foods

Home Search Alternative Medicine Stress Management ... Media CFS Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Diagnosing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome is based on the presence of unexplained exhaustion that is not improved by sleep or rest, persists for three to six months, and causes an all-over weakness and lack of energy so severe that it interferes with normal living. The first step in diagnosing chronic fatigue syndrome is to rule out any underlying conditions, including psychological disorders, that may be contributing to the problem. Some of the other illnesses that can cause excessive fatigue are: hypothyroidism, anemia, Lyme disease, and chronic hepatitis. (See the differential diagnosis below.) 1994 Revised Case Definition Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
The Annals of Internal Medicine
Major Criteria A case of chronic fatigue syndrome must include the presence of the following: 1. Clinically evaluated, unexplained, persistent, or relapsing chronic fatigue that is of new or definite onset (has not been lifelong); is not the result of ongoing exertion; is not substantially alleviated by rest; and results in substantial reduction in previous levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities.
Minor Criteria Symptom Criteria The concurrent occurrence of four or more of the following symptoms, all of which must have persisted or recurred during 6 or more consecutive months of illness and must not have predated the fatigue:

I ritis
Iritis is the inflammation of the iris. If this is associated with inflammation of the choroid, it is called as uveitis (pronounced as you-v-i-tis). Many times retina also gets infected, termed as chorio-retinitis (Pronounced as ko-rio -retinitis) Causes Infections like Tuberculosis, Leprosy, Herpes virus infection, AIDS, Toxoplasmosis etc. Non- infectious causes like eye injury, Sarcoidoisis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis etc. How do I know it is Iritis? Besides redness, there will be pain in the eye, watering, photophobia (inability to withstand day-light), decreased vision . This tells you that it is not likely to be just Conjunctivitis. To distinguish it from glaucoma, you will have to go to an eye-doctor and get your eye examined. He will take the eye pressure, examine you on the slit-lamp and then will make the diagnosis.
Management
Tests are required to know the cause so, treatment can be given accordingly. Blood tests, skin tests, X-ray Chest may be done.
Treatment
Steroid eye drops Any inflammation in the eye will cause scarring, which will hamper vision. To avoid this, the inflammation has to be urgently controlled.

that other bodies can fend off without a problem. My Mom also had compromisedlungs resulting from sarcoidoisis and was on steroids for that for years.
http://www.geocities.com/robindecato/mommy.html
My Mom. Before we knew my mom had Hodgkin's, she would sweat at night, sometimes had a fever and was very tired. Doctor V later felt small bumps in her neck -behind her ear. She had the bumps looked at in August of 1998, and we then found out she had Hodgkin's Lymphoma. My mom had undergone several different chemo regimens since then. During July 1999 she had a stem-cell transplant to rid her body of Hodgkin's. Most people that are treated for Hodgkin's do not need to resort to a stem cell transplant. It is a very strong form of chemotherapy with a dose 5 times as strong as other treatments.
Here is a picture of my Mom when she went to the hospital to have her stem cells collected. She was in the bone marrow unit of the hospital for all of July 1999. During this time she was in a special germ-free unit, had round the clock nurses, and was on a special low micro-organism diet. She had trouble swallowing, eating, and keeping food down during this time, but quickly regained her strength. The stem cell transplant went well and my mom was able to recover quite nicely. After being home for several months, she began radiation therapy. With radiation there was a whole new set of side-effects.

Even if the majority of these members and their family are reasonably healthy and do not require special care, the few of them who do inevitably generate major problems for CFMS personnel and administrative authorities who are responsible for them overseas. Those CF members and their family who are allowed to go overseas in spite of important contraindications are often deeply disappointed. They find that what should have been a uniquely pleasant overseas experience has become a nightmare because the types of services they were expecting are not available in the new location, or at least not as easily available as in Canada. To prevent these unfortunate situations, the following guidelines and contact numbers are provided to CFMS personnel to help them better determine who should, and who should not, be considered fit for a posting to Europe. IL 10-99-004 In Reply Refer To: 13 March 5, 1999 UNDER SECRETARY FOR HEALTH'S INFORMATION LETTER RESPIRATORY DISEASES IN FORMER NAVY DECK GRINDERS 1. This letter calls attention to a concern that some veterans, who served as deck grinders on aircraft carriers in the Navy during the 1970s through the 1990s, may have unrecognized, misdiagnosed occupational lung disease. Reevaluation of a Navy veteran who had been involved in grinding antiskid materials on aircraft carrier decks resulted in a change of diagnosis from sarcoidosis to pneumoconiosis. This case led to a study by staff of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) which found an increased risk for diagnosis of sarcoidosis, especially for African-Americans, associated with service on aircraft carriers. Conversely, another paper reported a decreased risk for a diagnosis of sarcoidoisis in Navy veterans who had served only on "clean ships." 2. Navy veterans who are concerned about possible misdiagnosis of pneumoconiosis as pulmonary sarcoidosis or who have other pulmonary problems possibly related to hazardous exposures in service are being invited to enroll to receive Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care. It is recommended that VA facilities provide the following services to veterans who may have occupational lung disease: a.

    Special to DG News
PHILADELPHIA, PA November 9, 2001 The use of oral prednisone reduces symptoms of dyspnea in patients with sarcoidosis affecting the lungs, but it does not have an impact on pulmonary function.
According to Natesa P Shanmugam, MBBS, a private practice physician in Washington DC, United States, "sarcoidosis is rare when you look at the general population, but amongst minorities the disease is a lot more common. It can affect virtually every organ, and the cause is not known. It predominantly involves the lungs and over the years can lead to respiratory failure in 20 to 30 percent of patients."
While working in the pulmonary critical care unity of the DC General Hospital, Dr. Shanmugam and colleagues set out to determine whether prednisone, which is given to patients with sarcoidosis for lack of any other therapeutic options, is actually helpful for this indication. He presented their findings here this week at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP).
The investigators retrospectively reviewed the records of 68 patients with sarcoidosis, all African American, treated at their clinic for at least six months. 26 patients had radiographic stage to 3 of the disease, and 42 had radiographic stage 4.

Ken's Poem For those of you that know me, I have spent the two years since my diagnosis trying to understand what sarcoidosis is or isn't. I am not medically qualified to say what happeded to me, but as you read through this you may conclude as I did, that it might have. Please read the information for which it is intended, information. Both of my parents died from complications of Parkinson's Disease. My brother died from Multiple Sclerosis. My sister has Lupus. My niece has Lupus. And now I have sarcoidosis. At this point it might be easy to suggest that genetically we were pre-disposed. But then enters my first wife, she has Lupus. This suggests environmental. Was there anything common? At the age of 5 in 1955 I moved with my family to a small farm in Colorado. I grew up as a farm kid. My sister went to college to study nursing. My brother left for the Army. Sis married a great guy and soon I had a niece visiting grandma and grandpa for the weekends. I left for Viet Nam, burried my father, got married and we lived with Mom for a while back on the farm. Then I burried my brother. Then my mother. Mom told us that during the 1970s both Colorado State and Federal Agencies where taking soil and water samples from the property but never told her why. Since many of her farming neighbors were dying of cancers and with reports of deformed animal births, she suspected a nearby facility called Rocky Flats that processed plutonium and beryllium for the nuclear war industry.
