Wildlife Goa Sun, Sand, Sea.... Goa is a state which is gifted with incredible natural beauty; from her beaches and gently rolling hill to her vegetation and animal life. To protect some of this natural beauty from rush of modern development, goahas set aside four wild-life sanctuaries nested in the wooded areas of in-land Goa. The rich, varied and vibrant avenues available to nature lovers, or bird-watchers, or wildlife. Together wildlife cover an area of 755 square km, or around 60 per cent of forest area and 20 per cent of the geographical area of the state. Though Madei and Netravali have been notified, they have not been taken over by the wildlife wing from the territorial division.

Dear MP. animal sanctuaries (Licensing) Bill – Second Reading Friday 11 January. Oneof the questions posed was whether animal sanctuaries should be licensed.

House of Commons London SW1A 0AA 8 January 2002 Dear MP
Animal Sanctuaries (Licensing) Bill – Second Reading Friday 11 January
The Alliance supports the principles of Ian Cawsey’s Private Member’s Bill to require the licensing and control of animal sanctuaries in England and Wales. We believe that the welfare of animals kept in sanctuaries must be safeguarded. Furthermore, we believe that institutions operating in this capacity which often receive charitable donations should be held publicly accountable to ensure that money is used to care appropriately for animals. Zoos in England and Wales are already subject to licensing under X which are administered through local authorities. We suggest that animal sanctuaries could be licensed under the same system in order to ease implementation and ensure common standards of care. On 2 January the animal welfare division of DEFRA issued a letter of consultation as Ministers wish to consider whether to introduce an Animal Welfare Bill to consolidate and update existing legislation in order to promote the welfare of farmed, captive and domestic animals. One of the questions posed was whether animal sanctuaries should be licensed. We suggest that if the Animal Sanctuaries (Licensing) Bill does not reach the Statute Book that it would be appropriate and satisfactory to consider the licensing of animal sanctuaries as part of a broader Government Bill in the future. Yours sincerely John Gardiner Director of Political Affairs

So where will the primates go when the experiments end? Animal sanctuaries, though imperfect subsitutes for the wild, are considered the next best places for the animals to live out their lives in peace. There are many animal sanctuaries in the US which will accept primates from research institutions for retirement. However, the quality of care provided by these facilities varies significantly. Sanctuaries accredited by The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS) are regarded as the finest in the country. There may be other sanctuaries capable of providing acceptable care, but the Primate Freedom Project believes that because of its rigid standards, TAOS is an exceptional place to begin if the University decides to retire the primates it uses in experiments. NOTE: Many (maybe most!) of the sites listed below are opposed to the existence of zoos. I think these viewpoints make interesting reading and that anyone interested in zoos and in animals should know about them. While I don't agree with everything that is said, I DO support any group dedicated to the protection of animals, either in the wild or in captivity. Further, I believe that anyone who keeps animals in captivity should be accountable for whatever actions they take and have NOTHING TO HIDE. Ideally, a good zoo will continuously strive to become a better home for the animals in their care and contribute much to education and conservation. They should always be open to inspection and (constructive) criticism. If you have questions about anything your local zoo is doing you should contact the director and voice your concerns.

Wayne Geiger/Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary Bart, the miniature donkey, knew his duties for the day: He was supposed to allow guests to walk him around the farm grounds or just sit still as they posed with him for a picture. Bart, however, had other plans. The donkey decided he would lead the charge. Guests found themselves desperately hanging on to Bart's lead rope as he pranced around the grounds, as if he were the designated spokesanimal for this September 21, 2002 open house at the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary in Sheridan, Oregon, about 20 miles west of Salem. But that's what happens when you actually allow a farm animal to express himself: You discover he actually has a mind of his own. And a personality. And lots of other surprising traits. Bart lives with nearly 80 farm animals, including cattle, burros, llamas, sheep, pigs, geese, ducks, goats and chickens. They all live but through the grace of the Lighthouse, which was established when the animals' previous home, at another area sanctuary, was on the verge of collapse. Land was donated to the Lighthouse, and the animals had themselves a new home. The September 21 open house, which was filled with tours and activities for both animal and visitor, was the Lighthouse's first public event, and it purposely coincided with National Farm Animals Awareness Week. Both events are designed to raise consciousness about farm animals in our increasingly urban and technological society.
