Thank you for visiting the Animals in Distress Sanctuary web site.
It is donated to the charity to give people an insight into the 24 hours a day 365 days a year rescue work that is carried out at the two sanctuaries to provide the strays, abandoned, neglected, injured, sick or old animals and unwanted pets in the northwest of England, a better quality of life for them, either through finding a caring new home or providing long term shelter for their remaining years in the secure and loving environment at the Field of Dreams retirement home.
Throughout this site you will find information that will explain the workings of the two sanctuaries, where they are, how to find them if you want to visit and how you can help them. You can become a Member and receive a regular newsletter or take out a Sponsorship and receive regular updates on your chosen animal.
The two sanctuaries have rising vets fees, food, mortgage, power, insurance and transport costs. Our resources are stretched to the limit. We need your support to enable our expanding work to continue.

Dear Animal Lover, I would like to present to you an animal welfare fund that has been set up by an organisation involved in both education and active animal welfare. Assistance Aux Amis des Chats has been set up to help the most helpless, that is, those homeless, sick and injured cats in need of extra care. I am sure you will appreciate that in France there are some dedicated full-time volunteers who sincerely do all they can to ameliorate the living conditions of defenceless animals, even though this takes a lot of sacrifice, both financially and physically. Perhaps you are one of these persons. It is precisely for this reason that this fund has been set up; to help individuals with vet bills and cat-food when their personal resources fall short and a maximum of their time is spent in the rehabilitation of abandoned and stray cats. But this fund, depends on the generosity of whoever can afford to give a donation to show their support.

NASA The National Animal Sanctuary Alliance was formed in the Spring of 2001 following the very difficult period involving Foot and Mouth Disease where the voice of animal sanctuaries was often ignored totally. Membership is free to all sanctuaries and individuals rescuing animals, and the cost of running the Alliance is met by Farplace Animal Rescue its founding Sanctuary as a service to other sanctuaries. We run ANIMALHELP, an email discussion list for animal sanctuaries that shares expertise and advice to better help the animals we all rescue. The aims of NASA are as follows: 1. To represent the concerns and interests of Animal Sanctuaries across the United Kingdom. 2. To support member and non member sanctuaries and individuals rescuing animals with advice and support. 3. If funds are raised in excess of campaigning work, to distribute them to animal sanctuaries. 4. To raise the issues of animal welfare in the media and other for a NASA Site Map

Reports reckon that Yorkshire is one of the worst areas in the country for cruelty to animals. Frankly this does not surprise me. I can only speak for the area I live in but there must be some of the most ignorant louts in creation around here. I often met children as young as ten out with air rifles having a merry afternoon shooting songbirds. In fact some of the yobs with guns will shoot anything that moves - swans, herons, rabbits, cats, dogs, children and adults. Equally there are many, many people who abandon their pets when they are no longer cute, when they are difficult, when they are in need of treatment from a vet, pregnant, old or simply getting in the way of holidays. These are the sort who would like abandon their children just as fast, but children mean money from the state.
I have to say here that however concerned and helpful the RSPCA appear on their television appearances my own experiences of this particular society in this area is that they are totally unconcerned and entirely unhelpful. That is if anybody ever answers the phone at all in the first place. No - if you need help with abandoned or hurt animals, or you want to volunteer to help with animals in the Rotherham area I suggest you try one of these animal sanctuaries or rescue groups.

Residents at Animal Place
Animal Place rescues animals who have no place else to go. Some were abused. Others were impounded by animal control due to neglect or cruelty. Some are from traditional humane societies who were unable to find permanent homes for them. "Downed" animals rescued from auctions and stockyards, and "owner"-relinquished animals also make up many of the animals who will live out peacefully the remaining years of their lives. If you would like to financially "adopt" one of the residents, some of whom are described below, you can start the process online.

Sanctuaries or animal jails?
  • Few zoos get it right, many are unbearable
  • By Lori Valigra
Jumbo may have been one of the most revered, and largest, elephants ever seen in captivity, but the animal star, who lived in the mid-1800s, endured a lifetime of hardship: He was sold to various institutions, nearly starved to death, and, finally, killed by a runaway freight train. Even when he was treated comparatively well, at the London Zoo, for example, his keepers didn't seem to understand his dietary or health needs. The giant pachyderm's daily diet included 200 pounds of hay, two bushels of oats, one bushel of sweet biscuits, 15 loaves of bread, three quarts of onions, and occasional buckets of apples and nuts. But it also included buckets of cakes and candies, and even hefty swigs of whiskey. BORN FREE: Some zoos help preserve endangered animals, like Bai Yun, this giant Panda in San Diego. Other zoos, however, still subject animals to poor conditions.
