Listing of the major (and some not so major) events in russian history with explanatory and related materials on the Web.
http://www.departments.bucknell.edu/russian/chrono.html
T his page dates the major (and some not so major) events in Russian history and links them with explanatory and related materials on the Web. The chronology has been divided into four arbitrary periods: Kievan-Appanage (860-1689), Imperial (1689-1916), Soviet (1917-1991) and Post-Soviet (1991 to the present). A fifth page displays related chronologies on specialized subjects. Matti Vuorikoski offers an overview in Finnish. Should you have suggestions for improvements or extensions, please let Robert Beard know by clicking his name to post an e-mail message. Please report all dead links to him.
The Kievan and Appanage Periods

The Post-Soviet Period
1991-Present With the disintegration of the USSR in December of 1991 Russia has set out on a new road to democracy and a market economy.

Few nations have as colorful and vivid a history as Russia. At times torn between the East and the West, sometimes buffering the two, Russia has always been a pot of enormous ethnic diversity which refuses to melt. The result has been a mixture of socialism and capitalism, of east and west, Christianity and Islam with a bit of social experimentation thrown in. This page attempts to capture the flavor of the rich diversity evolving over Russian history and hence depends as much on the endeavors of others as those of the Russian Studies Program. We hope you enjoy your visit and learn more about the origins of the Russians and their neighbors.
A Chronology of Russian History
This chronology of Russian history provides the dates the major events of Russian history from the beginnings of written Russian history (The Tale of By-gone Years) through the current year.

    About This Site
    PURPOSE
Today there are hundreds (perhaps thousands) of internet sites that touch on Russian history. Potentially, these sites are of great value for researchers and students of the subject. Yet it must be said that Russian historical sites are of very uneven quality: a few provide useful and accurate information; the vast majority are haphazard in their presentation of factual material; while still others are intentionally tendentious and dangerous. As a result, the value of the web is severely reduced: researchers, who can separate the wheat from the chaff, must spend hours looking for valuable resources; students, who often cannot discriminate between accurate and inaccurate sites, are sometimes mislead by willfully erroneous pages. The purpose of "Russian History on the Web" is to provide a critical guide to web resource relating to Russian history so as to make the new medium useful for researchers and their students.
    AUDIENCE
This site is intended primarily for academic researchers, teachers, and their students.
    COVERAGE
This site does not offer universal coverage of Russian historical material on the Web. It includes only those resources that are: a) reasonably accurate; b) neutral in tone and intent; c) likely to be of use to researchers and students of Russian history. As a result of the application of these criteria, the vast majority of web sites wholly or partially devoted to Russian history have been omitted from the present index. The single exception to this policy is the section of this site cataloging "Tendentious Pages." On it, see below.
