Russian Military Men Have No One to Protect Them
It seems that Russia does not care about its military men

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov will present the military reform concept for the government tomorrow. The reform was prepared by the Defense Ministry of Russia. Russian media outlets report that the authority of the ministry is going down in the army very fast. Russian military men were hoping that Sergey Ivanov would be able to change the hard condition of the Russian Armed Forces

The Issues of Modern Archaeology
Archeological work basically happens on construction sites
PRAVDA.Ru conducted an interview with Valery Bulgakov, the man who set up a website of East-European Archeology. Born in 1966, Valery graduated from Kiev University, from the Vienna Institute of Byzantine Studies. At present, he chairs the analytical research lab of the Research Institute, which attached to the Ukrainian Ministry for Culture and Art.
How did this idea come up – to create a website for East-European Archeology? Who was the founder of the project: archaeologists or programmers?
The idea came up during the development of the East-European Archaeological Journal. Now, this journal is a part of the numerous sections of the server. We thought that we needed some sort of a bubble, an environment, in which this journal could become a lot more efficient. This is how the idea appeared. We have specified the logic of the project several times and changed the design. The current situation with the project is the result of our work. Yet, we have more changes to come. Speaking about the people who initiated the website, I have to say that the whole thing was launched by archaeologists. I am an archaeologist myself. At least, I deal with the project as an archaeologist.
The site is very well organized, and it contains a lot of high quality scientific information on it. One can find underwater archaeology, numismatics, and so on and so forth. The list of all of its sections would take too much space. How do you save and select the information?

Exibitions Archaeology History Home ... Startpage Archaeology Some Russian, Byzantine and Oriental objects from the 1996 Archaeological Excavations in Sigtuna, Sweden An archaeological excavation in the former Viking Age water front in Sigtuna has yielded many finds of Byzantine, Russian and Oriental origin. These underline the importance of contacts between Viking Age Sweden and the East. Archaeologists were stunned to find two leaden seals. One of the seals is from Byzance. It pictures St. John Baptist with an inscription on the reverse in Greek ("Lord, help your servant Cosmas") and is dated to the 11th century. The other seal is probably Russian and from the 11th century or the first parth of the 12th. These seals, shown here, are probably the first of kind ever to be unearthed in Scandinavia. The seals may have been attached to shipments of silk, wine or olive oil. Shards of red amphora pottery (photo) from Constantinople were also found this year. The seals may also have been attached to documents, sent to officials in Sigtuna. In the 1995 excavations, several gold finger rings and more than 60 gold beads were found. The objects were then regarded as sacrifices offered after returning from adventurous sea voyages. This year, another gold ring (photo) and several dozen beads were found, strengthening the previous interpretation.

Print version Results and perspective study of the mummified remains from the medieval necropolis near Salekhard
Add date: 12.02.2002
For three years now the Yamal archeological expedition of the Institute of History and Archeology of the Ural Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been carrying out diggings at the medieval necropolis Zeleniy Yar under the supervision of N. V. Fedorova. The said necropolis is at a distance of about 500 m from the settlement of Zeleniy Yar which is in the cis-Uralian district of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, approximately about 40 km up the river Poluy from Salekhard. The work is being sponsored and financed by the Administration of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District. All in all, to this day 27 burials have been opened, approximately a third of which belong to children, a third to males, the rest have not been determined due to the fact that the remains are extremely fragmented, but many details make it possible for us to say that they are most probably also male. We have not found any burials which are definitely female. All burials were carried out by putting the bodies into narrow pits inside which were wooden constructions lined with birch bark. All the adult burials show signs of some sort of protective charm: the buried was either tied with leather straps in several places, or that part of the grave where the head was, was deliberately destroyed.

Excavations in Zaraysk, Russia
20 July- 3 August 1998 FILLED FOR 1998 In the summer of 1998, excavations at the Upper Paleolithic site of Zaraysk again took place. A small (max. 12) select team was chosen to participate in a two-week session. The research is under the direction of Dr. Hizri Amirkhanov of the Institute of Archaeology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. Serious excavations were begun in 1995 and so far have uncovered the remains of at least one pit structure, several hearths, mammoth bones and tusks, and thousands of flint artifacts. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the site was used at least 18,000 years ago and as long ago as 22,000 years. Flint artifacts indicate that the people were part of the Eastern European Kostenki-Avdeevo archaeological culture. Paleolithic excavations in Zaraysk The town of Zaraysk is a small city, by Russian standards, of about 25,000 people. Only three hours by bus SE of Moscow, about half way to Rayzan, it exemplifies a 'real' Russian town. It has a long and noteworthy history and an intact 16th century kremlin (fortress), only feet from where our excavations are. 19th Century church inside kremlin Within the kremlin are two active Orthodox churches, one built in the 17th and the other in the 19th centuries. The town was not occupied by nazi forces during World War II and much of its prerevolutionary architecture remains. It is an active market town with a central market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The site and kremlin overlooks the Ocyotr River (one of the cleanest in European Russia) and are located in the town center.

Tradition and Transcendance in Russian America An Archaeological Approach to Identity in Colonial Contexts Katharine Woodhouse-Beyer Brown University
Historical archaeologists have been increasingly drawn to the concepts of ethnicity, class and gender in understanding the formation and transmission of cultural identity during the North American contact period. These research emphases, adding to earlier empirical studies of pearlware and square-cut nails, take inspiration from a growing number of anthropological and historical works which demonstrate the complexly entwined nature of social phenomena. A variety of case studies across time and space suggest that ethnicity, as but one aspect of identity, is fluid, exists without geographical boundaries, and is both culturally and historically situated (Barth 1969; De Vos and Romanucci-Ross 1975). If ethnicity is so transitory, then how can historical archaeologists begin to understand the material dimensions of ethnic identity , as I define it, the means by which people perceive and represent their kinship, shared history and social boundaries? And how does identity formation and expression exist within hegemonic relationships, when people not only identify themselves in relation to others, but are also subjected to classification by dominant groups?

I had the opportunity to learn a great deal about the methods of pottery analysis while assisting Paul Arthur, a medieval archaeologist who came to Chersonesos this year to examine the pottery found during the University of Texas (Austin) excavations of 1997, 1998 and this year. Acting as an interpreter, I was also able to learn more about Chersonesos and its ceramics collection during meetings with Mr. Arthur and the resident medieval archaeologists at the museum of Chersonesos, when we were shown various pieces from the museum archives.
