Professor Mark W. Spong , Director
The College of Engineering Robotics and Automation Laboratory was established by Professor Mark W. Spong in January, 1987, as the Department of General Engineering Robotics Laboratory. Initial support was provided by General Motors Corporation, Zenith Corporation, the Department of General Engineering and the College of Engineering In 1992-1994 the laboratory received a major upgrade with the help of a grant from the National Science Foundation Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement (ILI) Program. Subsequently, the laboratory was merged with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Robotics Laboratory as part of an effort to establish interdisciplinary, college wide laboratory facilities. The current name of the laboratory reflects its broader mission. The laboratory is used by a number of classes including:

Why Run Multibody Dynamics Simulations? Multibody Dynamics Simulation is a cost effective way to assess the control and loads capability of mechanisms or machines. These simulations address issues like: Control System Feasibility and Performance Parts Sizing and Optimization System Failure Modes Analysis Loads Analysis Real Time Control Software Testing and Implementation Mechanical systems that benefit from this kind of simulation include automotive engines, car steering and tire suspension system, robotic locomotion, airplane landing gear system, satellite payload deployment and pointing system, etc.... At Concurrent Dynamics... we develop Multibody Dynamics Simulation Programs for the aerospace, automotive, heavy machinery and biomechanical industries. Our programs solve the equations of motion that represent the physics of the mechanism. They simulate the dynamics of interconnected rigid and flexible bodies when subjected to internal forces, contacts and environmental forces. They produce kinetic, kinematic, control performance and loads data as output. Dynawiz is our multibody dynamics simulation program. It is capable of forward and inverse dynamics, contact constraints, and prescribed motion. It can simulate systems with both rigid and flexible member bodies. It runs on PC and on Workstations. It works with C, C++, and Fortran application codes and with Matlab(5.3 and up )/Simulink(c). With every Dynawiz simulation, you only have to write the control part of the simulation, and leave the dynamics to Dynawiz. Developing your dynamics/control simulaiton in the Simulink workspace is especially easy given the Simulink's graphic resources. However, if you are writing the C++ or Fortran control code, our dynamics packages would supply you with a control code template that makes sure that your control code interfaces correctly to Dynawiz.
