    Genus Rhododendron
    • Rhododendron are shrubs of the genus Rhododendron which is in the heath family (family Ericaceae) which includes heathers, Kalmia (mountain laurels), blueberries and cranberries. Since almost all of these plants require acidic soil, they are often referred to the family of acid-loving plants. Rhododendron are found in the wild, chiefly in mountainous areas of the arctic and north temperate zones. They typically have large, shiny, leathery evergreen leaves and clusters of large pink, white, or purplish flowers. North American species include the great laurel, or rose bay (R. maximum), West Virginia's state flower; and the Western rhododendron (R. macrophyllum), Washington's state flower. Azaleas are in the same genus. Most cultivated rhododendrons are hybrids that are propagated from cuttings or tissue culture. Rhododendron are referred to as the King of Shrubs since they are regarded by many as the best flowering evergreen plants for the temperate landscape.

Rhododendron Rhododendron Rhododendrons are magnificent shrubs that can reach tree-like proportions. They form great pillows of colour as branches become obscured by a profusion of beautiful flowers. They are found growing all over the world. In fact, the only areas where rhododendrons do not occur in the wild are Africa and South America. The different species range from enormous trees that reach up to 30m (100ft) tall, with leaves up to 90cm (3ft) long, through to alpine shrubs only 2.5cm to 5cm (1in to 2in) high. Grown in Britain since the 18th century, it wasn't until the 1900s that rhododendrons became widely known. Breeding work first began in the Victorian era and one of their earliest successes was the beautiful crimson-flowered R. arboreum. In a bid to improve the hardiness of this tender variety from India, breeders began crossing it with other species. The brightly coloured varieties that resulted from this and the crosses of other rhododendrons that followed soon became very fashionable. The start of the twentieth century saw a flood of new species coming into Britain by plant hunters whose expeditions were often funded by collectors. Breeders quickly absorbed the new types into their work, continuing to increase the range of varieties available to gardeners.

Care of Rhododendron simsii , the Indoor Azalea
Another indoor plant often forced into flower for the Christmas trade is the indoor Azalea or Rhododendron simsii . This Indian azalea will eventually grow to between 20 and 45 centimetres or 1 to 1.5 feet tall. There are white, red, orange, purple flowering forms as well as bicolours, ruffled, doubles and singles. Indoors they can create a wealth of both subtle and vibrant colours. These plants require cool, damp and shady conditions. If the potting soil dries out, the plant will almost certainly die. It is best to water by plunging the pot into a deeper container of preferably tepid rainwater water, or water from melted snow. Leave until bubbles have ceased to appear. Then drain, and place on a bed of small stone or pebbles to which water has been added to maintain a high humidity around the plant. Mist spray the plant from when the plant is moved indoors to when the buds show colour. Also, from when the buds show colour, to when the flowers fade, feed very fortnight with a weak acid liquid fertilizer. In mid-May, repot with fresh potting soil which should be a lime-free, peaty compost and begin feeding with a high potash liquid feed. Plants can be placed out-of-doors in a cool, shady site for the summer, and must be kept constantly moist. Remember that these plants will have to be brought indoors before the danger of frosts in late summer/early autumn, depending upon the year.

Buds fail to open and remain hard and brown
If the buds on your plant have formed but fail to open, examine them closely. If they are hard and brown and are covered in dense black bristles, the problem is bud blast This is a fungal disease that enters the buds after they have been damaged in some way, for example, when leafhoppers enter the bud to lay their eggs. Affected buds can remain on the plants for up to two years and can severely restrict flowering. It is almost impossible to control leafhoppers so where you do spot bud blast remove and destroy affected buds.

Soft, brown buds and discoloured, soft flowers
Buds that are soft and brown or flowers that are discoloured and stunted are suffering from frost damage This is a particular problem with azaleas and rhododendrons. Other signs of frost damage to look out for are distorted or puckered leaves and spilt or curling bark.
