Rhodesia: Unilateral Declaration of Independence Documents, 1965

Prime Minister Ian Smith : Announcement of Unilateral Declaration of Independence, November 11, 1965 Now I would like to say a few words to you. Today, now that the final stalemate in negotiations has become evident, the end of the road has been reached. It has become abundantly clear that it is the policy of the British Government to play us along with no real intention of arriving at a solution which we could possibly accept. Indeed, in the latest verbal and confidential message delivered to me last night we find that on the main principle which is in dispute the two Governments have moved further apart. I promised the people of this country that I would continue to negotiate to the bitter end and that I would leave no stone unturned in my endeavours to secure an honourable and mutually accepted settlement.

Chapter 4
The Story of Southern Rhodesia
T he portion of the Continent south of the Zambesi is with some exceptions suitable for settlement by white races, so far as the climate is concerned. The exceptions are the vicinity of the Zambesi itself, the desert and waterless coast regions of Damaraland, and a fairly wide belt of Portuguese territory on the East Coast. The whites are, however, incapable, save in a very limited degree, of performing the more arduous forms of manual labour. The actual development of the country, both agricultural and mineral must depend, therefore, either upon African labour or upon imported Asiatic labour to which the whites are opposed for various reasons, which need not here be discussed. For a century the healthy tablelands and plateaux of this region have been the scene of the kind of racial conflict which occurs when an invading race, of a higher culture than the aboriginal population and possessed of superior offensive and defensive weapons, disputes with the latter for the occupation of the land. Natural man presently finds himself threatened in his liberties. Civilised man is filled with the terror which comes from the knowledge of overwhelming odds. Mutual fears inspire reciprocal cruelties. "The Kaffirs had ample justification of the war into which they rushed with such fatal imprudence ... urged to revenge and desperation by the systematic injustice of which they had been the victims ... the original justice is on the side of the conquered, not of the victorious party."

The land was administered from 1890 by the British South Africa Company The first flag of sovereignty flown in what is now Zimbabwe was the British Union Flag (Union Jack) raised at Fort Salisbury on 13 September 1890, which marked the beginning of prolonged British influence in the region. Instrumental in bringing European pioneers to the area was the 19th century British imperialist and financier, Cecil John Rhodes, whose British South African Company (BSACo) was later given prospecting and mining rights by the Matabele king, Lobengula. The company's own flag had not been received from England when the Pioneer Column set out from South Africa, so a Union Jack was carried instead, the first company flag only arriving in Fort Salisbury in 1892.
The flag of the BSACo was raised in the Matabele capital of Bulawayo on 4 November 1893 after the Company's forces led by Major Patrick Forbes drove the native Ndebele from the town. The flag consisted of a Union Jack emblazoned with the BSACo badge in the centre.

PREFACE.
Mr. Rhodes, however, is fully able to defend himself, and needs no outside apologist to intervene between himself and his critics, even if I were disposed to take such an onerous position. To turn to more peaceful matters, With regard to the identity of Rhodesia with the Ophir of old which is discussed in the first chapter, since those lines were written Dr Carl Peters has returned from his expedition through the country, and, speaking with an antiquarian knowledge of South Africa which is probably unequalled, he gives it as his opinion that Mashonaland is undoubtedly the Ophir of the ancients, and produces very cogent reasons in support of this view. The book was mainly conceived and written before the outbreak of the war, but with the object of making the volume as complete as possible, chapters dealing with the sieges of Kimberley and Mafeking and the movements of Colonel Plumer's Rhodesian force have been added. The war has not, of course, failed to considerably militate against the prosperity of Rhodesia. For several months that country was cut off from all telegraphic and railway communication with the south, and connection with the outside world was only possible by means of the Salisbury - Beira railway and telegraph. When the war is over and terms of settlement come to be discussed, signs are already forthcoming that any scheme which neglects the interests of Rhodesia will meet with strenuous opposition in that country.

A CASE FOR RHODESIA
On 3rd March, 1978, the Prime Minister, Mr. Ian Smith, signed an accord with three internal Black Nationalist leaders, Bishop Muzorewa, Reverend Sithole and Senator Chief Chirau. A Transitional Government was formed to pave the way for black majority rule, one-man-one-vote elections, subsequently scheduled to be held on 20th April, 1979. The spirit of the March Agreement thus signalled the end of the post-UDI period in Rhodesia's history.
1. INTRODUCTION
When on 11th November, 1965, Rhodesia had severed her ties with the British Government, the action came as the end of an intensive series of negotiations begun some three years previously. But the process which led to it had begun long before and it cannot be understood without an awareness of Rhodesia's early history and in particular her unusual constitutional position vis-a-vis the United Kingdom. Rhodesia had been a self-governing British Crown colony since 1923, and before that had been administered by a commercial company under a Royal Charter. At no time had she been ruled by the Colonial Office, been administered by British Government officials or been occupied by British troops. The reason for these departures from normal British practice lies in the earliest years of Rhodesia's existence. 2. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
