Against the Current: How One School Struggled and Succeeded With At-Risk Teens
Author: Michael Brosnan - The schools in Providence, Rhode Island, like those in most large and midsize cities, suffer alarming drop-out rates. In 1989, Urban Collaborative, an independent, public middle school for teenagers at risk of dropping out, was founded. The results have been phenomenal. More than 80 percent of the students go on to graduate from high school. Michael Brosnan uses the stories of the director, students, and teachers to explain how and why this school succeeds where so many have failed. http://www.amazon.com

"Lately, an overwhelming number of educators have
bought into the concept of "differentiation." "This is a sound concept for general education, and even some gifted education advocates are saying that within-classroom differentiation is going to take care of our most able students. This belief is nonsense. I have lived through several iterations of the "we-can-take-care-of-gifted-students-in-the-regular classroom," and it always ends up being a smoke screen behind which bright kids get a few extra assignments and more work based on traditional (didactic) models of learning. Without specialized personnel and differentiated learning models, we will seriously under-serve gifted students." Joseph Renzulli, in the article

"The purpose of general education at the University of Rhode Island is to lay a foundation for the lifelong enrichment of the human experience and for a thoughtful and active engagement with the world around us. This foundation is built on recognition of the complex nature of the natural and human worlds. The objective of general education is to introduce students to the fundamental dimensions of this complexity and to build an appreciation of different ways of understanding it and different cultural responses to it."

Civic education: The key to an interested and informed electorate
By Rep. Suzanne M. Henseler and Sen. Hanna M. Gallo
Two years ago, when our country elected a new president in one of the closest national elections in history, only 33 percent of Americans between 18 and 24 years old went to the polls. That’s down from 50 percent in 1972.
Why has voter interest among young people reached such a dismal low? Check out this number: 89 percent of high school seniors scored below proficient levels in United States history in 2001, according to a test administered this year by the National Assessment of Educational Progress. That same test showed that more than half of all high school seniors could not say who we fought in World War II.
A survey of seniors at 55 of the most elite American universities, released by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni in July 2000, delivered similarly abysmal news about students’ knowledge of history and government. Sixty-five percent of these students failed a test consisting of 34 questions whose answers they should have learned in elementary school. Forty percent of them couldn’t identify the correct half-century during which the Civil War took place. Forty percent didn’t know that the Constitution established the division of power between states and federal governments. Only 22 percent knew that the phrase “government of the people, by the people, for the people,” came from the Gettysburg Address.

$7.8 Million in Special Education General Supervision Enhancement Grants Awarded to 24 States, Territories and Outlying Areas
More than $7.8 million in grants have been awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to 24 states, territories and outlying areas for special education improvement efforts as part of a competitive process to help reform and improve services for children with disabilities. A total of 42 states, Puerto Rico and outlying territories competed for the awards, known as General Supervision Enhancement Grants. The grants are intended to complement and support the accountability system developed by the department’s Office of Special Education Programs by assisting states and lead agencies to develop and improve their infrastructure for holding states, districts and schools accountable for improving student achievement. "Accountability for improved performance rests at the heart of our efforts to improve American education," said U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige. "These awards will help move us toward assuring that our special education programs are offering quality educational services to all students with disabilities so that no child is left behind." Activities supported by the grants include:
  • developing data-driven, evidence-based state monitoring systems that focus on areas that have the greatest impact on better outcomes for children with disabilities;
