Australia’s cultural heritage
Australia’s unique, diverse and vibrant cultural heritage is found in the many different faces of the nation today. It is expressed through customs, folklore, language and traditions, reflected in the natural and built environment, and captured in the objects created and collected. The Australian Government is committed to preserving and making widely accessible the nation’s cultural heritage—whether through tangible items such as paintings, books, oral histories or natural history specimens, or intangibles reflected in traditions and habits.
Cultural Ministers Council
The Cultural Ministers Council is the ministerial forum for exchanging views on issues affecting cultural activities in Australia and New Zealand. Formed in 1984–85, the Council is largely responsible for recognising the importance of cultural activities to Australia’s civic, social, political and economic development. The Council deals with issues as varied as heritage and library collections, symphony orchestras, regional arts funding, the opportunities presented by online and digital technologies, Indigenous culture, the return of Indigenous cultural property, arts and cultural sponsorship, and international cultural promotion and export.

Section 4.2 Domain specific data documentation standards
    How to select a standard
It is difficult to offer very specific guidance and recommend one of the many standards available; it is usually more viable to offer advice on a case by case basis. However, the following three considerations should be looked at when choosing a standard:
    • Fitness for purpose Reputation Existing experience
    Fitness for purpose
    • Is the proposed standard fit for its purpose? Does the structure it recommends makes sense for the documentation of the proposed resource? Are the categories of information it suggests to record relevant? Has it been used for similar resources before?
Some standards are geared to the description of museums information, others explicitly for visual arts resources, whereas others still are more generic and are used for all types of electronic resources or subject areas.
    Reputation
How well established and widely used is it?
