MAGAZINES
Here are some of the magazines we read regularly to keep informed on religious, political, social, and cultural issues. Wherever possible, the web site is provided, otherwise we will provide the magazine's address.
MAGAZINES WE READ FAITHFULLY AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
First Things: A Monthly Journal of Religion and Public Life This is the monthly magazine that I always read first and travels with me just in case I have a moment or two to read a portion of it. This is due to its execellent mix of articles both in terms of content and in the length of the pieces (short, medium, and long). It also possesses one of the best book review sections with both long and capsule reviews. First Things covers religious, social, political, and cultural issues with its ecumenical mix of top-notch writers. It is published by The Institute on Religion and Public Life, "an interreligious, nonpartisan research and education institute whose purpose is to advance a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society." The Editor-in-Chief is Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, and its Editorial (and Advisory) Board reflects its ecumenical nature: Peter Berger, Midge Decter, Stanley Hauerwas, Gertrude Himmelfarb, Michael Novak, George Weigel, Hadley Arkes, Walter Berns, James Burtchaell, James Finn, Suzanne Garment, Mary Ann Glendon, Carl F. H. Henry, Glenn Loury, and George Marsden (this is just a partial list). The magazine is published monthly (with combined issues June/July and August/September). Subscriptions are available via: P.O. Box 3000, Dept. FT, Denville, NJ, 07834 or at 1-800-783-4903.

** Description **
"Fasinating reading for students of American religious history, the book belongs in large academic and theological libraries." Choice
"...will be a useful research tool in academic and religious libraries, whether or not they have runs of the magazines listed here." Library Journal
Magazines have long been a medium that both shapes and reflects the popular mind of Americans. This work provides profiles of some one hundred popular religious magazines currently or formerly published in the United States. Each sketches the history of a magazine and identifies its major focus, often through noting representative articles. Authors of the essays offer a critical appraisal of each magazine, assessing its contributions to popular religion and its role in shaping how ordinary men and women develop their own religious beliefs and perspectives. The essays will give users an understanding of the particular emphasis of each magazine, while the whole provides an overview of popular religious magazine publishing in the United States.
"A wall may stand between church and state in American law; however none separates church and society. Anyone who wishes to understand the interplay between religion and society in the United States today and in the past, must become familiar with these influential magazines, some of which boast circulation in the hundreds of thousands. This guide gives them a good starting point."

Popular Religious Magazines of the United States Good News: Social Ethics and the Press (co-authors Clifford Christians and John Ferré), Oxford, 1993. Christians, Ferré and I are associated through our common experience at the University of Illinois, and through common commitments with respect to the role of communication and culture. This book takes issue with the long-standing consensus among media theorists and practitioners concerning the essential role of Enlightenment individualism as a foundation for press theory. We take a more holistic model based on our common theological commitments and argue for a press theory and ethics that is grounded on the human person as a "being in community" and that issues in public justice, gape, and shalom. The book has been reviewed extensively and citations are beginning to appear. Media Ethics: Cases and Moral Reasoning Journalism Ethics in Africa

31. Lincoln/Net: Project Overview
In 1800, only a few religious magazines were being produced, but by 1850, therewere 181 religious periodicals, millions of tracts, pamphlets, books of hymns
http://lincoln.lib.niu.edu/digitalprintculture.html
Print Culture
By Julie Roy Jeffrey, Ph.D.
Nineteenth century religion and reform were inextricably linked with the transformation of the means of communication in the early decades of the century. It is hard to imagine the spread of religious enthusiasm or reform sentiment without understanding how each effectively exploited print culture and contributed to technological change such as the development of paper making machines and the steam driven printing press. And it is hard to understand the character of print culture without seeing how both evangelical religion and reform promoted reading by creating easily understood and cheap forms of literature that could spread their message simply and quickly. In 1838, Grenville Nellen announced to an audience in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that they were living in "an ERA OF PAPER, and the AGE OF PRINT." While this news could hardly have been a surprise, many of those in the audience could doubtlessly remember a time when neither paper nor printed materials were especially plentiful and when printed matter reinforced what was already known rather than conveying what was novel and new. Perhaps some also recalled a time when books were so costly that they were to be read over and over again and implicitly contrasted that earlier day with the contemporary habit of reading widely and less intensively, of hurrying through the latest newspaper or novel, and then laying it aside permanently. "Shall we content ourselves with the post-coach speed of the eighteenth century, in the schemes for evangelization, while all worldly schemes are propelled with the locomotive speed of the nineteenth century?" asked the American Tract Society. "Shall we creep along . . . neglecting all the increased facilities Providence has given us for publishing the great salvation, while steam, and electricity, and the printing press are left to become the agents of ambition, avarice, and revolution?" The answer was a resounding no.

Religious cults - how to understand them
"People who end up in cults are normal people. They are usually intelligent, open-minded and honest. They're willing to make sacrifices for the greater good of the group. They're interested in self-improvement and in the improvement of the world. The best kinds of people, in a way, are targeted by cults. Their very decency makes them desirable as cult members." Dr J W West, Professor of Psychiatry, University of California Definition of a religious cult
The evolution of religious cults

The religious element in cults

The needs of religious cult leaders
...
Can the cult experience be avoided?
DEFINITION OF A RELIGIOUS CULT
The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines a cult as "a system of religious worship; devotion, homage to person or thing". Nowadays, in the public mind, the word "cult" is more likely to be associated with brain-washing, manipulation of followers, public scandals over cult leaders' sex lives, murder and mass suicide, rather than religious worship. One of the difficulties of defining a religious cult is that it is an organization in a condition of gradual change. A religious cult may be encountered in its early, middle or late stages of evolution. At its beginning the cult consists of a small group of people focused around a benign leader to whom individuals are attracted. At its end, it can become a manipulative, exploitative, multi-national organization. What most people mean when they speak of a cult, is a New Religious Group (NRG) which has acquired the characteristics of mid-late stage evolution.
