(Published in Famous Reporter 24, Dec 2001)
A Note on Religious Literature I’m reading a short work by St Bonaventure called the Five Feasts of the Child Jesus. It was written probably in 1259. (The translation, by Eric Doyle OFM, was published as a pamphlet in 1984 by the Sisters of the Love of God, Oxford.) I’m no stranger to medieval literature – I used to specialize in it, years ago – but now I find I’m preoccupied with what religious writing can mean to someone, like me, who has no religious beliefs. I need to make clear where I’m coming from here. I don’t have any consciously metaphysical beliefs at all. My sense of wonder is reserved for reality, or nature (I use these words interchangeably). I only wouldn’t call myself an atheist because that seems to connote something too militant – an emphasis on the absence of God. I don’t feel so personal a hostility. I imagine the professed atheist feels about God rather as I do about a corporate institution. Something that doesn’t really exist, at least not in the way it’s talked about, but whose supposed existence is perceived by me as a powerful force for evil. A board member writes to the staff: “ As you know, we are looking closely at our strategy and our costs. I believe we have a great opportunity for a step change in performance and to provide our company with a competitive platform for longer term growth. It is an opportunity which, with your support, we can and must seize.”

UZBEKISTAN SPECIAL REPORT: Pervasive State Control of Religious Literature. by Felix Corley , Keston News Service, 27 March Despite its international human rights commitments to allow the free publication, import and dissemination of religious literature, the Uzbek government continues to obstruct this right for all religious groups, Keston News Service learnt from religious believers of a variety of faiths in a series of interviews in the Uzbek capital Tashkent in mid-March. Government censorship of all religious literature is enshrined in law and is operated through the government's Committee for Religious Affairs (CRA). The authorities frequently obstruct or ban religious literature they dislike. Foreign Islamic literature is treated with great suspicion, as is Uzbek-language literature about faiths other than Islam. Christians were encouraged when the government granted permission to the Bible Society of Uzbekistan, a broadly-based group affiliated to the United Bible Societies which has official registration, to publish a translation into Uzbek of the Old Testament Book of Proverbs. The translation is to be formally presented in Tashkent's Museum of Applied Arts on 30 March in the presence of government officials, Christian leaders and diplomats. This is the first Bible translation printed in the country in Uzbek, although the Bible Society has imported Uzbek-language New Testaments in the past.

Scotland Chapter 11: 17th Century Religious Literature After the defeat of Charles, Parliament was anxious to provide sufficient ministers of the gospel to reach those areas of the country they deemed sufficiently in need, Wales being perhaps on top of their list. In 1650 was passed the Act for the Better Propagation and Preaching of the Gospel, appointing many prominent government officials as Commissioners in Wales. Their job, and they carried out their duties most efficiently if not ruthlessly, was to investigate complaints against the resident clergy (who had mostly supported Charles), following the doctrine of "Divine Right", and to eject those they considered unsuitable or disloyal. They also appointed "godly and painful men" to replace those who were deprived of their livings. The Welsh congregations seemed to take most of the changes in their stride. Puritan doctrines had been taking root in many of the urban centres and market towns, aided and abetted by wealthy London merchants. Since having their own Bible in 1588, in any case, the Welsh were fast becoming a "people of the Book," and they welcomed the travelling clergymen who appealed to their sense of religious independence for one thing, and who preached to them in their own language, for another. Fervent evangelists had a great and lasting influence, such as William Wroth and Walter Cradock, with Vavasor Powell, who advocated public hymn singing, the most dynamic preacher and recruiter of them all.
