Schools, other than voluntary aided schools and those of a religious character, must teach religious education according to the locally agreed syllabus. Each agreed syllabus should reflect the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, while taking account of the teachings and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain. Religious education makes a distinctive contribution to the school curriculum by developing pupils' knowledge and understanding of religion, religious beliefs, practices, language and traditions and their influence on individuals, communities, societies and cultures. It enables pupils to consider and respond to a range of important questions related to their own spiritual development, the development of values and attitudes and fundamental questions concerning the meaning and purpose of life.

8. Religious Education (8-1) "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations... teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you" (Mt 28:19-20). These words from the one who was often addressed as Teacher (Rabbi) are for us both legacy and task. They speak of the call all Catholics share to continue the work of Jesus. It is in response to the Gospel and the life of Christ within us that we take up the mission of catechesis, the traditional name for the ministry which seeks to enable a person’s faith to become living, conscious and active throughout all stages of life. (8-2) While this mission is in essence the same today as it was in the time of Jesus, we are nonetheless challenged to proclaim the good news in a timely voice that invites the response of people of all ages. (8-3) The United States Catholic bishops addressed this challenge in their message on Catholic education: "Proclaiming the Gospel is a perennial task and joy for the church of Jesus Christ. Rarely, if ever, has it been more pressing a need, more urgent a duty, and more ennobling a vocation than in these times when humankind stands poised between unprecedented fulfillment and equally unprecedented calamity" ("To Teach As Jesus Did," 6). The urgent tone of the bishops’ words seems all the more relevant in light of the response of the church of Central Texas to the Synod surveys. (8-5) The information collected throughout the Synod process reveals both great potential and alarming deficiencies in the religious education of Catholics of all ages. Presently there is a religious education program in every parish in the diocese, although size, quality and financial resources vary greatly from one parish to another. The diocesan Office of Religious Education is available to assist the parishes by providing workshops on a wide variety of topics, general support in the form of advice and audio-visual materials. However, the size of the current staff may not permit as direct or as frequent contact as necessary for effective implementation.

Religious Education at DnH: DnH strongly believes that each individual should have the right to religious freedom and the opportunity to enhance his/her religious knowledge and beliefs as ensured in the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. To this end DnH follows the prescribed instructional material by the Government of Pakistan. In addition, DnH has a good collection in the library that allows students and teachers to research issues concerning their faith(s). At the same time, DnH encourages parents to spend family time for the purpose of religious instruction. Each and every child should have a firm understanding of the religious practices and discipline of faith followed by his/her family. Book Review of A Functional Approach to Religious Education by Ernest J. Chave

Chester, Pa.
Baron Friedrich Von Hugel. the Roman Catholic interpreter of religion, always said everything he could in praise of a book he was reviewing before he went on to indicate the errors or inadequacies in the volume. We may well follow his example in our consideration of a most interesting book by Dr. Ernest J. Chave entitled, A Functional Approach to Religious Education First I think Dr. Chave is quite right in insisting that if religious education is to be meaningful to the modern world it must keep pace with the deepening insights of world thought and keep abreast with the problems of a changing culture. It is at this point that much of our religious education has failed miserably. We to often attempt to indoctrinate young people with outmoulded and unscientific ideas. The young person who goes to school today is taught to be analytical, objective, and scientific; he is taught not to swallow the apple whole, but to chew and digest. In the words of Bacon, he is taught "to weigh and consider." Such modern minds will find it quite difficult to reconcile the unscientific tenets of general education. If religion is to be meaningful to modern man it must be scientifically tenable and intellectually respectable.

The founding of the institute: The Institute for Religious Education was founded in 1992. This was necessary because of an article of the German Constitution (Art. 7,3) providing for religious instruction in all school systems in the country. The task of the institute is to provide education to students who want to become religious educators in German public schools. At the same time, seminary students are also given instruction on the teaching of religious education. (According to a resolution made by the Synod of the Lutheran Church of Saxony, ministers have to teach religious education in public schools.)
Its Class study: The teacher training program concentrates on the teaching of religious education in grade schools, middle schools, high schools (Gymnasium), schools of special education and vocational schools. There is also a program for licensed teachers who are already teaching to advance their education in this subject. This Institute pays particular interest in the integration of special academic knowledge, didactic contents and methods. The

The purpose of the program is to assist our children in their spiritual development, encouraging them to question, wonder, and develop their own religious beliefs. We provide age-appropriate curricula that teach about Unitarian-Universalism as well as other religions of the world.
Our Minister of Religious Education, the Rev. Darcey Laine, works in collaboration with the Children's Religious Education Committee to oversee the program. Additional volunteers serve as Sunday school teachers, classroom friends, special event organizers, snack coordinators, and in many other roles, both large and small. Parents or guardians of children participating in the program are expected to contribute volunteer time each year, and other members of the congregation are encouraged to do so as well.

A national curriculum is compulsory in all state schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and for virtually every pupil up to the age of 16. It is devised by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and its partner authorities, the Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales (Awdurdod Cymwysterau, Cwricwlwm ac Asesu Cymru - ACCAC) and the Northern Ireland Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA). Although it was introduced in primary and secondary schools between autumn 1989 and autumn 1996, it is an idea that has been common in other European countries for decades. The main aim of the national curriculum is to raise standards, making sure all children have a broad and balanced education up to the age of 16. In the past, many pupils dropped key subjects such as modern languages or science at 13 or 14. A second aim is to ensure that schools in all parts of the country are following the same courses. This has particular advantages for children who change schools when families move house from one area to another.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Photo by Rick Shory Our Mission The Mission of the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Religious Education Program is to provide an environment that nurtures spiritual growth and opportunities for religious discovery through teaching and modeling our seven Unitarian Universalist Principles Sunday Programs Everything we do at church is religious education curricula. We appreciate intergenerational and multiage activities. On the first 3 Sundays of each month the children are divided into classes according to age. These groupings change year to year depending on our numbers and needs. Our high school youth group YRUU (Young Religious UUs), meets 2 Sunday evenings/month. The 4th Sunday of most months is Children's Worship and Activity Sunday for all ages. Childcare is always available for children under 3. Classroom Curriculum All groups participate in activities that relate to our 7 UU Principles. We explore what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist, including the history of the religion. We study other religions of the world, intrigued both by the differences between them and the common threads of kindness and hope. Activities Religious Education Committees Board of Trustees Sermons At Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist church, high quality religious education programs for children, youth and adults are central to the ministry of our church. Today’s parents face some unprecedented challenges. They need the ongoing support and encouragement of others who share their values. Many people don’t even think about attending a church until their children ask "What is God?" Unitarians don't give children absolutes ours is a religion that embraces paradox, complexity and diversity. The Unitarian Universalist faith doesn't pretend to give children all the answers to the big questions. Our religion puts its faith in people's ability to explore the unknown together. It doesn't pretend to take away the mystery. Religious Education at Shawnee Mission UU Church is designed to foster independent thinking, to give kids the tools they need to make up their own minds about life's big questions. We provide our children with a foundation in the stories, beliefs, theologies and practices of the world's great religions, the history of our own religious movement as well as helping our children develop strong values and a sense of respect and acceptance and of differences. Unitarians want their children to stay open to their own inner knowing. We want children to learn to trust themselves, the world we bring them into, and ultimately to take responsibility to make that world more trustworthy. We want them to grow up knowing that it matters that they are alive and that they can and do make a difference.
