Frequently Asked Questions
by Gaia Brown Purchase Here! Finding the right religious education program for your child involves asking a lot of questions. This pamphlet is intended to help you learn if a Unitarian Universalist Sunday school is the answer. What kinds of things will my child learn?
Parents seeking a religious education program are often looking for a community of shared values in which to raise their children. These values are the most important things we teach, but we also give children building blocks with which to form their own beliefs. Most congregations offer a balanced program including Unitarian Universalist identity, Jewish and Christian heritage, other world religions, and social action/justice. How can you teach without doctrine?
The notable nineteenth-century Unitarian minister William Ellery Channing wrote, "The great end of religious instruction is not to stamp our minds irresistibly upon the young but to stir up their own . . . to touch inward springs." We have a strong faith in the inherent spirituality of children and see it as our task to nurture, not to indoctrinate. Our respect for the children teaches them respect-for themselves, for others, and for this fragile interdependent web of which we are all a part. How do the children learn?

In April, we will continue to think about principle 5: All people should have a say about things that matter to them. On Easter Sunday the kids will report to the main sanctuary for an all-ages story, and then will leave for an Easter-egg hunt. April 27 (weather permitting) we will be working on sprucing-up our garden at the Eastman Center : please remember to wear appropriate clothes! If you have plants, seeds, soil, or tools to donate, please contact Tryst or leave them at the Eastman Center A reminder to parents that our last RE Sunday of the year will be June 1. We plan to honor our children and teachers during the service, and to wrap things up with an end of the year party. We will have a summer break from regular RE classes for the remainder of June and July, but be on the lookout for special Sunday activities held for children. In August, members of the congregation will host all-ages activities for children during the service.

and Clubs ON SUNDAYS
Our Sunday Services start at 10:00. The children stay with the adults in the "big room" for the first fifteen minutes or so to see the chalice lighting, hear the opening prayers, and participate in a "Sharing Moment." Then the children go with their teachers to the Religious Education classrooms down the hall. Classes last for about 45 minutes; then the children join the adults for snacks. Most children dress casually, blue jeans and shirts are common, though some like to dress up in special clothes. If the weather is nice, some families go to the playground after church. The Youth Group sometimes stays with the adults to hear the sermon, depending on the topic. Kids don't ask questions only during church. Visit BETWEEN SUNDAYS for some answers and discussions about Unitarian Universalism. The RE teachers are all volunteers. The year is divided into four sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer). Teachers and assistants sign up for one session at a time, and most classes are taught by a team of 2-4 teachers, who take turns from week to week. This way, signing up to be a teacher means being with the children for six to eight Sundays a year, not a life-time commitment. All adults with children in the program are expected to assist or teach once a month.

  • To help each child develop a sense of purpose and a respect for his or her own worth;
  • To help the child understand other people and be concerned about them;

  • To help the child explore the difficult questions which will enlarge his/her insight into life, and to launch each child upon her/his pursuit of a personal religion;
  • To provide experience with worship;
  • To offer a group to which the child can appreciate belonging, and to nourish the feeling of "I’m glad to be a Unitarian Universalist!"

The choir rehearses on teaching Sundays. Performances will be announced.
Social Action
The Religious Education Committee feels strongly that service to others should be an integral part of our Church School program. Each year all the classes share a common focus on a major project as well as participating in short-term work. We join forces with other church committees when appropriate to develop intergenerational service projects. Parental Commitment
The First Parish Church School is a cooperative venture of the entire church community. We have a volunteer adult commitment to the religious education of all of our children. We understand that "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child."

When we come to this church, we make promises to each other, spoken and unspoken. These promises are sometimes called a "covenant." A covenant describes how we will treat each other and create a fun, safe and sacred space for all of us. Our Children's Covenant is based on our Unitarian Universalist principles. It is intended to help us as parents and as a religious community teach our children how to be respectful, responsible, and caring persons."
  • We respect all people through our words and actions.
  • We treat all people fairly and with kindness.
  • We learn together, welcoming one another.
  • We encourage each person's search for what is right and true in life.

    RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN
    I have received a number of letters from parents asking how their children may obtain a "religious education" outside of a church setting. These parents are familiar with trinitarian churches where children are taught that "human beings are naturally bad, and all people will be punished by eternal torture in "hell" unless they believe that Jesus died as a sacrifice to appease God's wrath." Intelligent parents do now want their children to be taught these irrational and inhumane beliefs. This essay is written in response to these parents and others who are interested in religious education for their children. In my view, religious education is too important to turn over to anyone other than parents (or whoever is rearing the child). I am writing this essay from a Christian Deist viewpoint. Let me begin by recognizing that most parents want to help their children grow and develop as healthy and happy individuals. Parents usually know (or can learn) how to meet the physical and intellectual needs of their children. Parents know that a child needs good food, exercise, rest, and medical care to develop a healthy body. Parents know that a child needs education to develop academic knowledge and skills. But parents also know that a child needs some kind of overall view of life that will help the child (now and as an adult) to cope with the questions and experiences that he or she will inevitably face in life. This "overall view of life" may be called a "philosophy of life" or "religion."
