Online Education: A Special Role in Resourcing RE Teachers
The flexible nature of online theological courses makes them especially useful for busy teachers. In particular, online courses can:
  • enhance the theological qualifications of staff currently teaching Religious Education, and especially those teaching Texts and Traditions, and provide qualifications for those who, though qualified in other disciplines, want to teach RE, or even eventually become School Chaplains.
The following units will be of special interest:
GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN THEOLOGY
Core Units:
Engaging with Scripture
This is a two unit subject extending over two semesters. This subject fulfils the requirements for the two core units in Biblical Studies (Old Testament and New Testament). It offers an integrated introduction to the interpretation of Scripture, focusing on an exploration of the various critical tools that assist us in reading scripture in an informed and intentional way. Some attention will be given to the social-historical background of the Biblical world.
Semesters 1 and 2, 2003.

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
THE SECRETARY "...Schools do more than train children's minds. They also help to nurture their souls by reinforcing the values they learn at home and in their communities. I believe that one of the best ways we can help out schools to do this is by supporting students' rights to voluntarily practice their religious beliefs, including prayer in schools.... For more than 200 years, the First Amendment has protected our religious freedom and allowed many faiths to flourish in our homes, in our work place and in our schools. Clearly understood and sensibly applied, it works." President Clinton
May 30, 1998
Dear American Educator,
Almost three years ago, President Clinton directed me, as U.S. Secretary of Education, in consultation with the Attorney General, to provide every public school district in America with a statement of principles addressing the extent to which religious expression and activity are permitted in our public schools. In accordance with the President's directive, I sent every school superintendent in the country guidelines on Religious Expression in Public Schools in August of 1995.

Join Teacher Groups (email lists)
We are hosting new email lists for Unitarian Universalist teachers (and those using similar curricula or homeschooling - click here for more information ) by age category ( Preschool Primary Elementary Junior High ... Adult , and Multi-Age ) through Yahoo Groups If you are interested in joining one of these lists, please fill out the form for the list of your choice below. If you would like to help moderate one of these lists, start a new one, get more information, or send us a comment about one or all of these lists, let us know of your interest by emailing us here Note to Religious Education Professionals (M/DRE's) : You may wish to instruct your teachers to talk to you first before discussing a problem in their classroom and/or cc you (or whomever oversees classroom problems for those with large programs) on their messages to these lists. Also, you may want to print out our flier or bookmarks to pass to teachers to inform them of this site. Note to All List Participants : Remember that these lists are not private, confidential conversations. There could be someone else from your congregation on the list and possibly a parent from your class. Really serious concerns should be brought to the religious education professional (M/DRE) as soon as possible following the incident or concern. It's best not to address individuals by name or even individual characteristics, but to generalize (how to deal with this kind of situation) as much as will work for the information that you are seeking.

Tutor: Viv Baumfield "Very good training in how to teach is a particular strength of provision"
(OFSTED, 2002) The course prepares students to teach religious education (RE) in both denominational and non-denominational schools to pupils across the ability range aged 11-18. What is taught in RE varies from region to region according to the Local Agreed Syllabus for RE. The course at Newcastle is designed to give students a broad foundation which will enable them to teach Christianity and the other major world faiths with confidence. Attention is also given to establishing links with other humanities subjects and contributing to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils. Balancing practical skill in teaching with a critical awareness of the importance of RE in the curriculum is the aim of the course. Local teachers work in partnership with the University in planning and delivering the course.

So what is it all about?
I have set this website up for a number of reasons:
  • First and foremost - There is very little information on the 'net that is aimed specifically at the teacher of RE. I know! I have spent a fortune in phone bills looking :( As the vast majority of web users are Americans and as it is illegal to teach RE in America they do not have much to say on the subject - for once. Many teachers of RE will find themselves much as my self as the only RE teacher in a school and isolation rarely makes for good practice. With this in mind I thought that it would be useful to set up a web site where RE teachers can exchange ideas and share their experience with those who need it. Because other subjects have the occasional site here and there why can't RE. Lets try and keep up with the competition.

Perhaps just as important is the wisdom we receive from everyday living. If education in our faith does not continue after our Baptism, then we are denying ourselves a look into the treasury of the richness of God’s love. As we learn about and experience God we begin to appreciate the awesome love and caring God has for creation.

    Religious Education Programs
Our children's religious education program encourages children to think for themselves and to have respect for the values and beliefs of the larger community. It promotes basic values of love and respect for ALL people and teaches the responsibility to make the world a better place. The life of the child is emphasized, along with his or her experiences, beliefs, fears, and family relationships through discussion, historical perspectives, drama, and other creative experiences. We work hard to make our religious education program relevant to the times in which we live. The curricula draw heavily from the world's great religions and the Unitarian Universalist Principles . The curriculum goes through a three-year rotation cycle with a year of UU-specific study, a year of Bible stories, and a year emphasizing other major world religions. The 2002-2003 year will be spent exploring Unitarian Universalism. Here is a brief rundown of our R.E. classes: Room 1

Curiously, case law under these Constitutions demonstrates that the language of Article III did not force schools to teach religion. In 1872, for example, the Ohio Supreme Court affirmed that the city of Cincinnati was acting Constitutionally when it forbade religious instruction and Bible reading in the public schools, despite the petitioners' claim that the presence of Article III language in the Ohio Constitution required such instruction (see Minor v. and the Globalised Economy There is a world-wide interest in human spirituality today. This is to be understood as a reaction against the global domination of money, and the spread of financial values into every area of modern life. Although the market promises life and abundance for all, it is becoming clearer every year that prosperity is available only to those inside the market. For those outside, whether in the so-called third world or developing countries, or within the rich world itself, the market is creating sharp contrasts between poverty and wealth.
As human values are challenged by monetary values, there is an urgent sense of need for the values of the human spirit. This is the context in which there is a world-wide revival of interest in spiritual, moral and religious education. Sometimes this takes a rather specific and narrow form, when a nation seeks to hold onto its traditional values by creating a very clear and perhaps dogmatic instruction for school children in the traditional religion of that country. Sometimes a new form of educational religious education appears, in which young people are encouraged to encounter the spiritual and religious values of several traditions, in order to enrich and deepen their own human development.
