GT-World Reading Lists
Parents of gifted and talented children are faced with many unusual challenges. With many of our children very early readers, the question is often asked "What books are good for my 4 or 5 year old who's already reading chapter books?" or "My fourth grader would rather read adults books, but I'm not comfortable with the topics. Help?" These lists are a summary of the reading recommendations from members of our GT-Families mailing list - parents and children - to answer these tricky reading list questions for our gifted children. We've avoided assigning age or grade levels to the various sections of the list. Some of our gifted kids are reading beginning chapter books labeled for 2nd or 3rd grade by the age of four. Other gifted kids start reading at 5 or 6, only to skip quickly to advanced chapter books labeled for 4th and 5th grade. Every child is different. Instead, we've created a continuum. If your child loves the Magic Treehouse series, he might also enjoy the poetry of Shel Silverstein or the Time Warp Trio series by Jon Scieszka. If he is outgrowing these books, perhaps he would enjoy E.B.White's or Roald Dohl's classics. Included at the end of the childrens book lists are two more lists: a Must-Read List for Parents of gifted children, and a list of books for insight into Life as a Gifted Adult.

Commercial site providing recommended reading lists related to business processes.
    http://www.hacinc.com/hacinc/DrDan/reading/recread.html
    "Dr. Dan's Recommended Reads"
We are often asked for suggested reading lists by those who attend our training courses and by our consulting clients alike. As a strategic management consulting and training firm we of course have our own extensive resource library loaded with our favorite references. And we have often compiled various listings based on client needs and their specific situations. As a part of our leadership development programs, where we have suggested specific titles to seminar attendees, we've then seen entire organizations embrace those recommendations and then use our suggestions to assist with their internal cultural shifts.
Our reading list is about the transfer of knowledge. We have no stake in any of these suggested titles, and we don't offer them for sale online or off. This listing will grow as necessary, and we'll also be making it easier to search for specific titles by topic or organizational need. And to help identify those recommendations that we believe will have a significant impact upon your organization, we'll also be implementing a "rating system" and introduce our pick of the month/quarter. So bookmark this page and check back often!

    JARHEAD by Anthony Swofford
From Amazon - Anthony Swofford's Jarhead is the first Gulf War memoir by a frontline infantry marine, and it is a searing, unforgettable narrative. When the marines or "jarheads," as they call themselves were sent in 1990 to Saudi Arabia to fight the Iraqis, Swofford was there, with a hundred-pound pack on his shoulders and a sniper's rifle in his hands. It was one misery upon another. He lived in sand for six months, his girlfriend back home betrayed him for a scrawny hotel clerk, he was punished by boredom and fear, he considered suicide, he pulled a gun on one of his fellow marines, and he was shot at by both Iraqis and Americans. At the end of the war, Swofford hiked for miles through a landscape of incinerated Iraqi soldiers and later was nearly killed in a booby-trapped Iraqi bunker. Swofford weaves this experience of war with vivid accounts of boot camp (which included physical abuse by his drill instructor), reflections on the mythos of the marines, and remembrances of battles with lovers and family. As engagement with the Iraqis draws closer, he is forced to consider what it is to be an American, a soldier, a son of a soldier, and a man.

These are the students who can read at or above grade level, but who can't seem to find anything to read that they find interesting. There are one or two in every class, and suggesting the right book can often make the difference in these students' performance. But what to suggest? The book lists below contain suggestions to fit a wide variety of interests typical in middle and high school students. The works include literary classics as well as contemporary works. Find out what your reluctant readers' interests are, and these lists can help you interest them in reading.
