The ABCs of Buying Kids Software
Do you know what to look for when you go software shopping? If you're like most parents, the experience can be overwhelming. I've received stacks of mail from my readers wanting to know what to look for before buying family edutainment software. Judging software by its box is like judging a book by its cover. You just can't make a good software decision judged solely by its packaging. As a consumer, your job is to arm yourself with as much information as you can get your hands on. A good place to start is by using the World Wide Web. By using Yahoo (or another comprehensive search engine), you can find software reviews on the Web. Here's where I shamelessly plug my own site, The REVIEW ZONE, at http://www.TheReviewZone.com If you're looking for challenging, educational software which is fun to play for hours, you've come to the right place. The REVIEW ZONE prides itself as being an in-depth and informative web site which features my software reviews on the best edutainment CD-ROMs for kids and families. You'll also find hardware reviews, computer/Internet book reviews, parenting columns, and a Letters section where you can read comments and questions from parents and educators like yourself. Here are a few points to consider when buying kids' software: 1. The Box

(All photos courtesy: Lar Hothem) Almost beyond the memory of many collectors is the basic pre-reading process of learning the ABCs. Such learning took place in many ways and different tools introduced the alphabet to young minds, ABC to XYZ. Along with absorbing the 26 letters, the first steps toward reading and spelling were taken. Wooden blocks were a favorite, being inexpensive and long lasting. These ranged from simple cubes to more ornate rectangular blocks with printed or lithographed scenes. Makers of blocks in the early 1800s included Anners, and Ruthven. More common are blocks from the mid to late 1800s, manufactured by Crandall and Milton Bradley. McLoughlin Bros. made wooden blocks, as well as many other children's items. ABCs upgraded to a higher power By Linda Shaw
Seattle Times staff reporter E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive In Ms. Miller's kindergarten class, students made tissue-paper daffodils this spring, and applesauce last fall. They baked pizza in March and watched the dough rise. All classic kindergarten activities. But these days, Julie Miller feels a tad guilty about them. So she made sure students wrote about the daffodils. And she made them count the apple seeds. In kindergarten today, play must have an academic purpose. The pressure to raise student achievement in Washington and across the nation is changing every school and every grade, even kindergarten. "What I teach ... is what I used to teach from September until December in first grade," said Renee Wiess, who works at Renton's Maple Hills Elementary, part of the Issaquah School District. When kindergartners left school last week, they were reading more than ever. The increased academic focus makes some worry that society is pushing young children to do too much, too fast, and risks making them hate school before they've barely started.

Who Says Learning Can't Be Fun?
Karen Williams BOSTON Does a good children's book entertain or educate? While kids yearn for fun-filled adventure, parents and teachers want something that provides worthwhile experience. Fortunately, many books meet both requirements. Here's a selection of new books that entertain and educate. (Please see a table of all the books mentioned below.) Picture Books
Among the ubiquitous alphabet books, Flora McDonnell's ABC deserves attention. Her clarity, color, and pure sense of fun make this a perfect book for little ones just learning their ABCs. In a bright, bold, painterly style, McDonnell cleverly juxtaposes large and small animals and objects under each letter of the alphabet. For example, "T" is for a regal-looking "tiger" who balances a tiny "teapot" on his head. The humor here - and on other pages - will be obvious to kids. Adults will find themselves smiling, too. NOT YOUR EVERYDAY SNAKE: A tree python with grace and agility. "Verdi," may not have wings, but that doesn't mean he can't try flying. His story offers lesson on the life-cycle of a snake.
(ILLUSTRATIONS FROM "VERDI") Janell Cannon (of "Stellaluna" fame) has given the book world another winner: Verdi.

The ABCs of success: New Fair Oaks School reading program boosts achievement and spirits
By Marjorie Mader Almanac Staff Writer What the "Success for All" reading program also brought to the neighborhood school in the Redwood City School District are new faces. Lots of them. In addition to the teachers who are using the program in their classrooms, some 60 volunteer tutors bring their talents and energy to the campus, plunging into a teaching effort that is geared to give the lowest-performing kids at the school a chance to succeed in life by acquiring reading skills they have already fallen behind on. The couple not only helped recruit many of the volunteers, they also were instrumental in raising $100,000 so that the school could embark on the reading project without having to eliminate its fine arts program, which was considered for elimination when school officials had to find funding for the badly needed reading program.
Community needs Surrounded by crowded apartments, streets lined with parked cars and industrial plants, Fair Oaks School serves a burgeoning Hispanic community. Many children encounter English for the first time at the school because Spanish is the language spoken in most homes and in their community.

A monograph on the potential impact of Arts Education
on The New ABCs of Public Education.
Developed by the
Arts Education Coordinators of North Carolina The Arts Education Coordinators endorse the ultimate goal of The New ABCs of Public Education. We believe that :
  • it is essential that all students reach proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics as a part of a comprehensive education. these proficiencies are attained in schools where the entire faculty is committed to the development of the whole child. varied approaches to testing, including authentic assessment, should be employed.
The New ABCs of Public Education does not necessarily weaken the role of arts education in successful schools. Howard Gardner has identified multiple intelligences which are independent and mutually supportive. We believe that the emphasis for all arts educators should be on the development of the whole child, inclusive of all intelligences. The use of interdisciplinary instruction which demonstrates to every child that all subjects and elements of life are interrelated is more effective than the separation of subject areas and disciplines. It is not possible to be an effective teacher in the arts without also teaching mathematics and the use of language.
