Josephine Ensign, UW assistant professor of nursing, reads to her son Jonathan Bowdler and Margaret Kahn at the University Book Store. UW researchers have compared learning to read and do math to mastering how to drive a car, tasks made even more difficult for those with learning disabilities. A new study by University of Washington researchers, comparing children with reading disabilities to those with dual reading and math calculation disabilities, indicates that this inability to rapidly retrieve basic information leads to impaired ability across the three domains of reading, writing and math. The study also provides new evidence that there are distinct subtypes of learning disabilities and that specialized interventions may be required to help children overcome these different kinds of disabilities. These findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association by Julie Busse, a UW educational psychology doctoral student. The results come from a larger study looking at the family genetics of learning disabilities, headed by Virginia Berninger, UW professor of educational psychology. The work is funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITY?
WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITY? A learning disability is a neurologic disorder that causes difficulties in learning that cannot be attributed to poor intelligence, poor motivation, or inadequate teaching. Dyslexia is perhaps the most common form of learning disability. Learning disabilities may occur in the following academic areas:
  • Language, both spoken and written (often difficulties with reading, writing and spelling); and,
  • Arithmetic (difficulty in performing arithmetic functions or in comprehending mathematical concepts).
As many as 80% of all people with learning disabilities have dyslexia. Dyslexia is often thought to be characterized by writing letters backwards but in fact it is much more. Dyslexia is a "reading disability," and is characterized by an unexpected difficulty in reading by people who possess the intelligence, motivation, and schooling necessary to read. It is a persistent, chronic condition rather than a transient developmental lag. The process of reading involves two processes: decoding the written word and comprehending the word. People with dyslexia usually have no difficulty with comprehension; they generally have adequate reasoning skills, vocabulary and syntax. The problem is that people with dyslexia cannot use these skills until the printed word has first been decoded and identified. For example, a woman may know the precise meaning of the spoken word "eligibility"; however, until she can decode and identify the printed word on the page, she will not be able to use her knowledge of the meaning of the word and it will appear that she does not know the word's meaning. New advances have documented that people with reading disabilities have different pattern of brain activity than individuals without reading disabilities.

Phonics and whole language learning: a balanced approach to beginning reading
From the National Association for the Education of Young Children
Children cannot learn to read without an understanding of phonics. All children must know their ABCs and the sounds that letters make in order to communicate verbally. The question in early childhood programs is not whether to teach "phonics" or "whole language learning," but how to teach phonics in context—rather than in isolation—so that children make connections between letters, sounds, and meaning. Phonics should not be taught as a separate "subject" with emphasis on drills and rote memorization. The key is a balanced approach and attention to each child's individual needs. Many children's understanding of phonics will arise from their interest, knowledge, and ideas. Others will benefit from more formal instruction. There are many opportunities to teach the sound a letter makes when children have reason to know. For example, the first letter a child learns typically is the first letter of her name. Some teachers worry that encouraging children to learn through experience and invent their own spellings will not provide them with adequate language skills. But literacy is not so much a skill as a complex activity that involves reading, writing and oral language. Ideally, children should develop literacy through real life settings as they read together with parents or other caring adults. Children begin to make connections between printed words and their representations in the world. Adults should keep in mind that children may learn to read at different paces during kindergarten and first grade. This is true for all children, including those with special needs and those from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. If parents and teachers work together and demonstrate mutual respect, children's learning will be reinforced at home and in the classroom.

Preschoolers need Training to know ABCs of Learning OK summer is over and the kids are back in school. But there are still some children too young for school. You may be wondering how you can best prepare them for some of the academic skills they will need in the future. We all know the value of play. Often, we scan the shelves in toy stores for board games that would be educational. And, in fact, there are some. However, you don't need a store-bought board game in order to teach children the principles of math and reading. Here are some activities that introduce young children to the fascinations of some very important principles. To children, these activities will just be fun. To you, however, you can feel satisfied that you are preparing them for the future. *Weighing and measuring: Kids spend lots of time playing in the sandbox, in the bathtub, or at the beach. often they just seem to be filling up pails or containers and dumping them out. Why not join them and make a guessing game out of how many spoonfuls it will take to big pail from a smaller cup or container? Compare two containers filled with water, sand or uncooked rice. Which is heavier or lighter? Children don't need tape measur4es or yar4dsticks to measure. They've got cars, doll, or blocks. They can line these up and guess how many it will take to go from their bed to the door.

To hear Roderick Kirby, you wouldn't guess that six months ago, he didn't know the alphabet. "Look at that fly. It sat on my hat." He chuckles, steals a glance at his tutor, then reads on: "My cap has a flap. Rap. Rap. Rap." This first-grader has his "ap" and "at" sounds down cold. He can read them, write them, build words with them, and trounce his tutor at phonics bingo. "Hey, I lose. You beat me, man. Good job!" says Dedric Barber, a volunteer tutor with Book Buddies - one of the top reading programs in the country and one of the few that have learned to use volunteers effectively. Volunteers are the latest strategy to resolve the nation's reading crisis. President Clinton has called for 1 million of them to help ensure that every child can read well by the end of third grade. Tens of thousands have already signed on to new tutoring programs associated with the president's America Reads Challenge (see story, Page B4). But, in fact, not much is known about how effective volunteer programs are in helping kids learn to read. Few programs evaluate their own work. And reading experts worry that a surge of inadequately trained or supervised volunteers into America's classrooms could do as much harm as good. BY THE LETTER: Roderick Kirby, a second-grader, gets reading help from volunteer tutor Dedric Barber. Right, his handwriting practice.

Sing and Sign for Powerful ABC and Phonics Immersion: Take Advantage of How the Young Child’s Brain Learns Best by Nellie Edge Mastery of the Alphabetic Principle is a Key to Reading Success. Understanding the alphabetic principle is vital to success in learning to read and write. Learning the ABCs – both automatic recognition of the letter and instant auditory connection to the corresponding sound – is essential knowledge that proficient readers and writers must learn. However, many ABC recognition and phonics instructional programs do not take into account the diverse learning styles and differentiated literacy needs that exist in a typical kindergarten classroom as they “learn their ABCs.” We know that all young children need to feel successful and be emotionally involved for optimal learning to occur. This is especially true of our hardest-to-reach children. Marie Clay’s research reminds us that children come to reading from many paths. A typical kindergarten classroom embraces children who are just beginning to hear and understand the sounds of English and others who are already eager readers and writers. Not all of our children have strong visual learning skills.
