7 How to Improve Reading Comprehension
    Key Point
Good reading means building frameworks for connecting words to thoughts.

    The Purpose of Reading.
The purpose of reading is to connect the ideas on the page to what you already know. If you don't know anything about a subject, then pouring words of text into your mind is like pouring water into your hand. You don't retain much. For example, try reading these numbers:
7516324 This is hard to read and remember.
751-6324 This is easier because of chunking.
123-4567 This is easy to read because of prior knowledge and structure.
Similarly, if you like sports, then reading the sports page is easy. You have a framework in your mind for reading, understanding and storing information.
    Improving Comprehension.
Reading comprehension requires motivation, mental frameworks for holding ideas, concentration and good study techniques. Here are some suggestions.
    Develop a broad background.
Broaden your background knowledge by reading newspapers, magazines and books. Become interested in world events.
    Know the structure of paragraphs.

Effective Practices for Developing Reading Comprehension Nell K. Duke and P. David Pearson Michigan State University As it should be, much work on the process of reading comprehension has been grounded in studies of good readers. We know a great deal about what good readers do when they read. Table 1 contains a brief description of what we have learned. Table 1: What good readers do Given knowledge about what good readers do when they read, researchers and educators have addressed the question: Can we teach students to engage in these productive behaviors? The answer to this question is a resounding yes! A large volume of work indicates that we can collections or packages of comprehension strategies can help students become truly solid comprehenders of many kinds of text. Balanced Comprehension Instruction To borrow a term from the decoding debate, comprehension instruction should be balanced . By this we mean that good comprehension instruction includes both explicit instruction in specific comprehension strategies and a great deal of time and opportunity for actual reading, writing, and discussion of text. Instruction in specific comprehension strategieswhich we will focus on in this papershould be accompanied by:
    • A great deal of time spent actually reading : As with decoding, all the explicit instruction in the world will not make strong readers unless accompanied by lots of experience applying their knowledge, skills, and strategies during actual reading.

Founded by Wayne Norman and Jacqueline Bailey This Poetic society and foundation became embedded within my mind, blazing a path through seasonal change with falling leaves. With breath taking views of inspiring beauty, surrounding the heart inside. Beating so fast only time past by, leaving poems along the way with meadows to roam while my mind stayed. Over the vast highways through the cities I found the need for care and understanding. Taking time to listen to the poetic voice I hear echoing along the way. Some time ago I was touched by a verse called "This be Our creed". With her permission we have adopted it for the Wayne Norman Poetic Society and Foundation as our creed. Such splendor woven with words sharing a warmth that instills us all. Please enjoy Victoria "This Be Our Creed" Each day let's do a golden deed, Some kindness show to one in need Let's try to lend a helping hand, A listening ear to understand. Let's try to spread some sunshine where We see a brother bent with care. With loving thought and friendly smile Let's strive to make each day worth while.

    40. Suggestions For Improving Reading Speed
This article, provided by Virginia Tech's Division of Student Affairs, gives insight to factors that Category Arts Education Language Arts Reading Instruction...... When you have advanced on the reading comprehension materials to a level at whichyou can understand collegelevel materials, you will be ready to speed
    http://www.ucc.vt.edu/stdysk/suggest.html
    SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING READING SPEED
    Improvement of Reading Rate
It is safe to say that almost anyone can double his speed of reading while maintaining equal or even higher comprehension. In other words, anyone can improve the speed with which he gets what he wants from his reading. The average college student reads between 250 and 350 words per minute on fiction and non-technical materials. A "good" reading speed is around 500 to 700 words per minute, but some people can read a thousand words per minute or even faster on these materials. What makes the difference? There are three main factors involved in improving reading speed: (1) the desire to improve, (2) the willingness to try new techniques and (3) the motivation to practice. Learning to read rapidly and well presupposes that you have the necessary vocabulary and comprehension skills. When you have advanced on the reading comprehension materials to a level at which you can understand college-level materials, you will be ready to speed reading practice in earnest.
The Role of Speed in the Reading Process
    Factors that Reduce Reading Rate
Since these conditions act also to reduce comprehension increasing the reading rate through eliminating them is likely to result in increased comprehension as well. This is an entirely different matter from simply speeding up the rate of reading without reference to the conditions responsible for the slow rate. In fact, simply speeding the rate especially through forced acceleration, may actually result, and often does, in making the real reading problem more severe. In addition, forced acceleration may even destroy confidence in ability to read. The obvious solution, then is to increase rate as a part of a total improvement of the whole reading process. This is a function of special training programs in reading.
