About the Project Research Team Activities Cities ... Home: Cities The originality of this project is heightened by our focus upon Canadian cities: Montreal and Toronto are the point of departure for the development of our programme - its research centerpiece and intellectual nucleus which we anticipate to provide the initial application of our analytic framework and a flexible measuring stick as we develop, revise and test the applicability of our perspective. Besides the Canadian cities of Montreal and Toronto, we have chosen Berlin and Dublin as European cities for comparison. Secondly, we wanted cities that show intensive recent building and rebuilding activity or acute collective concerns for technological expansion and its effects on city life. Thirdly we looked for cities in terms of what they might teach us about the pressure globalization is bringing to the relations between the

SPECIAL REPORTS Investor's Centre Outsourcing Special NI_AD('BottomLeft'); City breaks November 03, 2002 The Sunday Times Quebec and Montreal: a tale of two cities Stately Quebec, swaggering Montreal: the French towns are a class act, says Stanley Stewart On the heights of Quebec, an oversized American couple asked me to take their photograph. Their instructions about the background were quite detailed. They wanted the monument to General Wolfe, regularly blown up by Quebec separatists. They wanted the St Lawrence River. They wanted the citadel walls and the copper roof of the Château Frontenac. I dangled dangerously from a lamppost to accommodate the complexities of their compo- sition. In anoraks the size of Wiltshire, Bob and Mavis filled the foreground so comprehensively that there was little room left for all that background. As I clicked the shutter, their smiles were already fading.
