By Amy Gahran Most of us were educated to believe that there is one "correct" (and fairly formal) version of English grammar and punctuation, and any deviation from that is mere sloppiness. Not true! The whole point of grammar and punctuation is to enhance understanding The way we understand information depends, in large measure, upon how we get What's unique about the Web These considerations can help guide grammar and punctuation choices in your Web writing: It's not print. Text and images (both visual vehicles) are the primary ways to transmit messages on the Web. Unfortunately, today's computer screens remain a difficult visual environment (resolution, flicker, lighting, etc.). Most English punctuation marks are small, so as not to unduly interrupt the flow of letters on a printed page. However, on a computer screen, commas, periods, semicolons, colons, apostrophes, and many other common punctuation marks can be hard to see. On the Web, less punctuation (and bigger punctuation marks) is usually better. This is why the em-dash More white space on a Web page makes it easier to discern individual visual elements, like words and punctuation. Short paragraphs provide more white space, and also clearly differentiate points of discussion. Short, simple sentences are faster to read and typically require less punctuation.

Most writers, even professional writers, feel uncertain about proper punctuation on occasion. We expect punctuation to be governed by rules, but taste, style, and even breathing patterns also have influence. Punctuation practice is rooted in oral language. Oral face-to-face speech is a multimodal, multichannel event that encodes a lot of redundant information. In addition to speaking words embedded in grammatical structures, we vary the intensity of our speech; we pause for effect; we modulate the intonation, making the voice rise and fall; and we use physical gestures, body language, and facial expressions. In a telephone conversation we are no longer in a face-to-face situation, and we lose the visual channels. Generally, we compensate well by attending more closely to words, intonation and syntax, and the design of the telephone tends to help us focus on these things. A Significant Disadvantage However, in a speakerphone conference in which some of the participants are physically present to one another while another only has access to aural information, the latter party may feel that he or she is at a significant disadvantage. And when the two parties to a telephone conversation have different cultural backgrounds, or when one party doesn't speak the language of the conversation well, we feel the need of information from the missing channels to confirm our interpretations.

Most of the books were very technical and overly-detailed for me, and surely for my students as well. However, I found this book, along with a couple of others that were truly a relief in their clarity, fun approach, and pared down lessons. So, for anyone else who's just starting out studying grammar, I highly recommend this book. It's simple, relevant, understandable, and whimsical. It's not scary, too technical, and too much information. I don't think you'll be disappointed, unless you really WANT to learn every detail.
