GETTING PUBLISHED
7 Powerful Tips
The pre-published writer's guide to selling a novel. Click here to meet your host. A well-known literary agent once said: "Regardless of genre, manuscripts that catch editors' imaginations possess certain definable characteristics others do not." So what are these characteristics? Here's what he told me... A SOLE DRAMATIC QUESTION
Build your foundation with a SINGLE brick. The best manuscripts have a single dramatic question: Will Ahab catch the whale? Will the Jackal kill his target? Will the young lawyer escape the corrupt law firm that hired him? The twists and turns in your novel can (and should!) be intricate, but your foundation needs to have a sole, central conflict around which all the action revolves. A good way test your own manuscript is to synopsize your plot in a single sentence. Can you do it? SETTING, SETTING, SETTING
Expose your readers to new worlds. learn as they read. Whenever possible, place your action in a setting that treats your readers to a locale about which they know very little. A dairy farm, a secret intelligence agency, a coal mine, even another time in history are all settings that have the potential to transport readers to new worlds. It's no secret that the success of medical and legal thrillers is due in large part to their "settings" (we all love to learn about the inner workings of hospitals and courtrooms). Readers love to learn... so choose settings that teach.

Getting a book published has never been easier thanks to online services
Getting a book published may be easier than you think. If you are confident the ebook you’ve created has potential, getting your book published shouldn’t be impossible. Self publishing can be a smooth process if the right avenues are followed. There are self-publishing services of various types. There are a host of tools to make your way smoother such as ebook compilers, online libraries and available software to meet your particular needs. Be a smart shopper when shopping to get a book published. You may be better off not buying an all-in-one package from a publisher, but, rather, picking and choosing different options from different publishers. When considering a publisher, keep the following things in mind:
  • Don’t sign a contract that specifies that you, the author, should pay part of the production and marketing costs.
  • In self publishing, be sure the publisher has published other ebooks or books in your genre – it is ideal to have some books in your field, but none directly competing.

I love to write. How can I learn more about writing?
Print this page OR Print entire article
Fortunately, a great deal of information is available all around you, because books themselves are the best teachers. If you study the kinds of books you would like to write, you can learn a great deal. How do authors open their stories? How long are they? How many main characters do they use? What writing techniques do they employ? Most writers of nonfiction use the same writing techniques used by fiction writers. These include creating scenes, including dialogue, employing suspense, and so on. Think a lot about what you like best when you read someone else's writing, and use that as your guide.
Whenever you have the opportunity, take writing classes. This might be creative writing, or a particular English class at school. Community colleges and activities centers often offer writing classes as well. If you're a student, join your school's newspaper staff. You may not want to be a reporter when you grow up, but you'll learn a great deal about the writing process and you'll acquire writing discipline.
Read books about writing. There are many. Libraries usually have special sections devoted to this topic. So do bookstores. You'll also find several fine magazines devoted to the subject of writing, publications like

  • Fit is critical
Publishers get anywhere from several hundred to several thousand proposals for books every year, and most publish only a small fraction of what is submitted. In addition, peer review costs the publisher money, and all publishers have limited time and resources to spend on manuscripts that don't make sense for their particular list. Consequently, submissions outside of a press's area of expertise rarely merit an in-house reading and will likely be rejected. Blanket submissions to a large number of presses are therefore not to your advantage as a potential author. On the other hand, it is to your distinct advantage to seek out publishers who have lists in relevant subject areas. Not only do you vastly increase your chances of landing a contract, but you also increase the potential for your book's success after it has been published. Books are more easily and efficiently marketed within an established list than as a single project, and you will consequently get broader exposure in the marketplace by publishing with an appropriate publisher (whether large or small).

INFORMATION FOR WRITERS We offer the following guidelines to our potential authors regarding the submission of manuscripts for evaluation and possible publication. I. The first step is to fill the Project Information Questionnaire. 2. Manuscripts may be sent only on request by us, and should be typed double-spaced, on quarto-sized paper, bound, and accompanied as much as possible with a copy in electronic format. 3. Materials submitted must be in the final form for publication. Page-proof corrections are restricted to composition errors. 4 FDP will exercise all reasonable measures to ensure the safety of manuscripts under our possession. We however take no responsibility for the loss of, or damage to manuscript when in transit, or during evaluation or production process. The writer is therefore strongly advised to make sure to keep a copy of the manuscript. 5. Nominated experts evaluate all manuscripts. Based on their reports and other criteria established by company policy, the Editorial Board decides on whether or not to publish the manuscript. This decision is communicated to the writer. Writers whose manuscripts are accepted for publication are required to sign the company’s standard agreement before the beginning of production.

A Guide to getting your article written and published By HUGH CRAGO
Co-editor, ANZJFT
"Oh, this is great stuff. You know, you should publish this. Look good on your CV! Why not try that little thing the family therapists put out, you know the one I mean. I doubt if it's very hard to get into. Mention my name." After all their work, how depressing it must be for graduate students when the Editors' letter, excitedly opened in anticipation of rapid publication, advises that their paper "really needs a lot of work to turn it into a publishable article"! The hard truth is that a thesis is not a book, and a thesis chapter is not a journal article[m]at least, not usually. If supervisors offered them focused advice on how to prepare material for publication, not only research students, but editors and assessors too, would be less often disappointed. Real writers write because they must, not because someone else (even their supervisor) tells them to, or rewards them with jobs and promotions for doing it. The wish to see your work in print must come from you, in the first instance. Writing for publication is hard work, it takes patience, persistence, and humility. The fire that sustains our writing cannot come from anyone else, though a supportively critical network is immensely helpful in keeping the flame high.

Becoming Published
Finished your novel? So, what's next?
By Miranda Falcon
So, you finally finished that novel. In my opinion it is one of the most exhilarating feelings, when you at long last get to type those two little words: THE END. I promise, you will have many, many emotions as you begin this journey, but none will compare to that small little action.
So, what now? You consider this baby perfect. No, beyond that ... BEST SELLER material! We all do, especially with our first, but I can guarantee, no matter how wonderful a writer you are, it is far from perfect. You will be amazed by the things that will jump out at you, after a little time away from it. Set it aside, take a much deserved vacation, and then come back to it with fresh eyes. Pick it up and read it from front to back as if it were not your own. Then begin editing.
Personally, I have a thing for flow. If I read a sentence and it doesn't flow like poetry, or feel like it is speaking to me, I want to delete it. I can't always do this, but most of the time I change it. Look for subtle things that might confuse the reader: names too similar, too many points of view (very, very confusing), and loose ends that you missed when tying it all together. Did you some how end up with a character falling of the face of the earth, nowhere to be seen from chapter 12 to finish? Well, find him! Last but not least, spell check and spell check again. We want to look professional! Spelling is one of my biggest weaknesses. If I am not misspelling, I am making typos. My most common is reversing the letters in the word "to". Ugggg! We might laugh at it when we see it, but believe me: The editors will not find it endearing all.
