VULNERABILITY AND RESILIENCE
Why do some people collapse under life stresses while others seem unscathed by traumatic circumstances such as severe illness, the death of loved ones, and extreme poverty, or even by major catastrophes such as natural disasters and war? Surprisingly large numbers of people mature into normal, successful adults despite stressful, disadvantaged, or even abusive childhoods. Yet other people are so emotionally vulnerable that seemingly minor losses and rebuffs can be devastating sometimes even precipitating severe mental disorder. Most people's coping capacities lie somewhere between these extremes. Home Public BBSR Contents Page Chapter 2 Index
Personality Psychology
Some people are shy, others extroverted; some are chronically anxious, others confident. These relatively stable personality traits set people apart as individuals and are the focus of fundamental questions being explored by personality researchers. Such questions include: How, and to what degree, are people psychologically different from one another? To what extent are those differences rooted in genetics, early experience, or current situational factors? What is the basic nature of those differences that is, how do people differ in perceiving, constructing, and responding to their social environments? How do those differences affect mental health? How modifiable are personality traits? To what extent do these traits override the situation in determining a person's actions?

71. Coming Out Can Reduce Sexual Prejudice
A national survey study finds that heterosexuals who personally a gay man or lesbian have more favorable attitudes toward gay people in general than do heterosexuals without such contact.
http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/html/comeout1.html
Coming Out Can Reduce Sexual Prejudice Heterosexuals With Personal Contact Have More Positive Feelings toward Lesbians and Gay Men Research by a UC Davis social psychologist indicates that lesbians and gay men who come out of the closet to their heterosexual friends and family members help to create more positive attitudes toward homosexuality. "Heterosexuals with a gay friend or relative have significantly more favorable attitudes toward lesbians and gay men as a group," said Dr. Gregory Herek, a professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis and principal investigator for the national opinion survey, published in the April, 1996, issue of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin With co-author Prof. John Capitanio, Herek reported that simply having personal contact with a lesbian or gay man does not necessarily affect heterosexuals' feelings about gays and lesbians. Rather, heterosexuals tend to hold favorable attitudes if they know two or more gay people, if those people are close friends or immediate family members, and if there has been open discussion about the friend or relative's sexual orientation. The Journal of Sex Research
Open Discussion Is Important "Direct disclosure of one's homosexuality – talking about it openly – appears to play an important role in changing attitudes," said Herek. By directly discussing her or his sexual orientation, Herek suggested, a lesbian or gay man can help a heterosexual loved one to reach a better understanding of homosexuality and what it means to be gay. She or he can answer questions and break down stereotypes.

    Why study Psychology?
What are the learning opportunities for a psychology major?
For students who wish to major in psychology at The University of Toledo, the program is designed to provide a solid foundation in basic psychological processes (e.g., normal and abnormal personality, cognition, child development, social processes, perception, etc.) as well as methods of research (statistics, experimental methods, field methods, and various other research courses related to specific areas of investigation). Beyond these courses, the student has the opportunity to select from a broad range of courses dealing with various psychological processes and problems. Many undergraduates go on to carry out their investigations under the guidance of individual faculty. In addition, there is an active chapter of the national Psi Chi organization in which undergraduates may discuss topics of interest in psychology, career decisions, and participate in national research conferences and competitions.
