Psychology at Clark has a very distinguished past. From the 1890s to the 1920s, Clark was the international center for the study of Psychology, and most of the Psychology journals in the United States were once published by the Clark University Press. Noted Psychologyist G. Stanley Hall, the University's first president, founded the American Psychologyical Association at Clark in 1892. Another leading Psychologyist, Heinz Werner, came to the University in the 1950s and established the unique character of Psychology at Clark as thoughtful and empirically rigorous, with strong international connections. This distinguished past is the basis for our present teaching and research and future goals. We continue to develop Psychologyical science at its best, linking theoretical perspectives with empirical work. We are one of few Psychology departments in the United States that provide students with a background in both quantitative and qualitative methodology. Although aligned with the general developmental science perspective that is at the forefront of contemporary Psychology, our faculty adhere to a variety of theoretical orientations, which allows us to promote new ideas.
