Profiling
With MLton and mlprof , you can profile your program to find out for each function how much time it spends or how many bytes it allocates. To profile your program, compile with either -profile alloc or -profile time (you can not do both simultaneously). Then, run the executable. While it runs, the profiler maintains counts (bytes or clock ticks) for each source function in the program. When the program finishes, it automatically writes the counts to an mlmon.out file. You can then run mlprof on the executable and the mlmon.out file to see the percentage of the total (allocation or time) spent in each functions. Here is an example of time profiling, run from within the examples/profiling directory. This is a contrived example with two mutually recursive copies of the tak function. The profiling shows us that roughly three-quarters of the time is spent in the function, while the rest is spent in . There is a negligible amount of time spent in gc. You can display raw counts in addition to percentages with -raw true You can display the filename and line numbers for functions in addition to their names with -show-line true Allocation profiling is very similar to time profiling. Here is an example run from within the

By Wayne Petherick
Introduction
The investigative technique, most commonly referred to as criminal profiling, has recently risen in popularity both in practical use and media portrayals. A quick visit to any bookstore will reveal the popularity of the true crime section, and the recent flood of fiction works with a likable lead detective who profiles the offender is equal in volume. Depending on the literature one reads, the professional development of profiling over the past several decades will most likely be attributed to the work of the Behavioral Sciences Unit (BSU) at the FBI Academy, Quantico, Virginia. More specifically, a few key agents will be known by name, if not by reputation, including John Douglas, Robert Ressler and Roy Hazelwood amongst others. Many of the mass-market conceptions often include an agent as a representative of the BSU working on the case with local law enforcement. While the role of the Bureau in the development of profiling cannot be denied, they are often afforded a greater involvement in criminal investigations than they have in reality, and many of the agents (current and retired) are often attributed with developing methods that were in place before they even reached the FBI. Profiling most notably can be traced back to work done in the latter part of the last century, and possibly before this in a variety of forms. There has been a definite growth since this early work, with a diverse array of individuals doing a great deal of both research and practical work in criminal profiling.

Psycho-Geographical Profiling
Psycho-Geographical Profiling is concerned with the spatial analysis and psychological behavioral patterns of criminals. The technique employs a variety of methods, including distance to crime research, demographical analysis, environmental psychology, landscape analysis, geographical information systems, point pattern analysis, crime site residual analysis, and psychological criminal profiling. This process has both quantitative and qualitative (landscape analysis) dimensions to its application. Moreover, GPA seems to be a particular effective method for the needs of police investigators attempting to solve complex serial crimes. The technique examines the spatial data connected to a series of crime sites and in this study, more specifically, victims' body dump sites and point of fatal encounter sites. Landscape Analysis - While several sciences specialize in such matters as crime-scene analysis, none better than geography in conjunction with environmental psychology can analyze the site and situation of the entire crime. Qualities of places and the relations among place are stock-in-trade for geographers. While the quantitative methods, at first at least, aim at general patterns of crimes in the aggregate, the qualitative method used here aims at reconnecting the known facets of the crimes to the actual landscape. In this phase, geo-forensic analysis attempts to reconstruct the course of travel of the killer and the victim from before the crime until well after it. Every reasonable effort is made to lay down a complete trail for each person in the crime.

Consumer groups point to Web-based e-mail as a backdoor loophole for online profilers
Washington December 2, 1999Privacy and consumers groups and a leading security expert today asked the Federal Trade Commission to require software makers to close a technical loophole in many popular e-mail systems that allows senders of bulk commercial e-mail to track the surfing behavior of people who merely read the e-mail. http://www.tiac.net/users/smiths/privacy/cookleak.htm on the Web. Many e-mail readers display e-mail messages using a Web browser. If the message contains graphics retrieved from the web when the mail is opened, the loophole allows the recipient to be assigned a unique serial number in a "cookie," which will later be silently transmitted as the recipient surfs the Web. Many companies encode the recipient's e-mail address in the URL (web address) of the graphic, so that their servers can match the cookie to the e-mail address. Jason Catlett, President of Junkbusters Corp. said "Cookie leaks are the bug from spammers that keeps on bugging. It's intolerable that e-mail can be used to silently zap a nametag onto you that might be scanned by a site you visit later. It's like secretly barcoding people with invisible ink."

Introduction What You Can Do News Resources ... Cases Introduction Profiling is the recording and classification of behaviors. This occurs through aggregating information from online and offline purchase data, supermarket savings cards, white pages, surveys, sweepstakes and contest entries, financial records, property records, U.S. Census records, motor vehicle data, automatic number information, credit card transactions, phone records (Customer Proprietary Network Information or "CPNI"), credit records, product warranty cards, the sale of magazine and catalog subscriptions, and public records. Profiling has sparked an entire industry euphemistically labeled "Customer Relations Management" (CRM) or "Personalization." Companies collect information derived from a number of resources to build comprehensive profiles on individuals in order to sell products and to sell dossiers on behavior. This is often done without notice or extending a choice to the individual to opt-out of the dossier building. These dossiers may be used by marketers for target advertising, and they may be sold to government for law enforcement purposes. Companies also "enhance" dossiers that they already own by combining or "overlaying" information from other databases. These dossiers may link individual's identities to the following attributes:

Red Herrings, White Elephants, and CRM
It's estimated that $40 billion was spent last year on CRM initiatives. By 2003, that number is projected to be $90 billion. And the sad truth is that most of those past and future investments will yield an unacceptable return. In fact, the majority will fail. Why? Because in many cases the CRM initiative was a red herring, expected to magically solve all of the marketer's fundamental business problems. The basic thinking was that technology was the solution. Just install a mess of software and you would automatically be able to "manage" every customer relationship in a 1:1 way, get more value out of each relationship and give the customer more value as well. In actuality, what you got was a black hole of expense and a big bill. And what the customer got, who knows? In other cases the CRM project became a lumbering white elephant, an enterprise wide, cross functional black hole, attempting to integrate process, information and systems that had never been linked before. It's the equivalent of today's rage show "Junkyard Wars"- trying to create synergy and value out of a bunch of misaligned parts, when really the only hope is to start from scratch.
Yellow Bees and Second Generation CRM
Amidst the red herrings and white elephants, are some yellow bees. Individual pockets of CRM success that are buzzing inside lots of organizations. The positive outcome of what we call First Generation CRM, these successful initiatives have yielded great results in building more effective touchpoints in areas such as Sales Force Automation and Customer Service.
