Academic History:
I received my bachelor degree in math from Bucknell University in 1975 and my doctoral degree in statistics from Purdue University in 1979. I have been a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Bowling Green State University since 1979. I've had two sabbaticals: 1986-87 at the University of Southampton (England) and 1994-95 at Duke University.

  • Bayesian inference.
    Bayesian statistics is based on two ideas. First, uncertainty about unknown quantities is expressed using the language of subjective probability, and, given new information or data, probabilities are updated using Bayes rule. I believe that Bayesian inferential methods have advantages over classical statistical procedures for a wide range of inferential problems. I'm particularly interested in developing inferential procedures for the class of generalized linear models. Recently, I've written papers on how to check the goodness of a model from a Bayesian viewpoint. The analysis of sports data.

ISSN: 1570-1824 This is the new electronic journal of the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE) and the International Statistical Institute (ISI). Its homepage is at http://fehps.une.edu.au/F/s/curric/cReading/serj/index.html . Initially SERJ will be published twice a year and will be free. Editors: Carmen Batanero ( batanero@ugr.es ) and Flavia Jolliffe ( F.Jolliffe@ukc.ac.uk The journal's aims include the encouragement of research activity in statistics education, the advancement of knowledge about students' attitudes, conceptions, and difficulties as regards stochastic knowledge, and the improvement of the teaching of statistics at all educational levels. The intended readership is those engaged in statistical education research, teachers of statistics, and those interested any aspect of statistics education. The editorial board encourages the submission of papers and research reports, theoretical or methodological analyses, literature surveys, thematic bibliographies, summaries of research papers and of dissertations of relevance to the journal’s aims. Papers giving details of ongoing studies or consisting of reflective thoughts may be submitted, provided that the theoretical framework and, in the case of studies, some preliminary results, are included. Contributions in English are preferred, but contributions in French and Spanish are also acceptable. All the papers will be refereed.

Course Content: Our objective is to introduce you to the basic concepts of probability and statistics, and give you some tools which will make you more comfortable when working with random phenomena and experimental data whenever you encounter it in your future work in mathematics, the sciences, engineering, or the social sciences. Text: Mendenhall, Beaver and Beaver, Introduction to Probability and Statistics, 11th ed. , packaged with Minitab , published by Thomson Learning. (Note the new edition of the book.) Doing the reading will be essential for success in this course. Office Hours: Professors Panton and Su will be holding office hours which are open to students of all sections. Professor Su will be available MON 2-4pm and Professor Panton will be available WED 2-4pm. In addition, feel free to schedule an appointment with us outside these times. In addition there are course tutors (below) who are available in the evenings. Tutors: David Gaebler, Rob Gaebler, Grant Clifford, Andrew Niedermaier are the course tutors and will have regular office hours on SUN/TUE/THU 9-11pm upstairs in the Linde Activities Center.

Following are some activities relating to the topic of probability.
The items marked with are the contributions of the Summer 2000 participants. Contents of this Page Probability Rock, Paper, Scissors - The Study of Chance Probability Background: During the 1500’s Cardano was one of the first people to study probability (probably because he was a noted gambler). In the 1600’s Fermat in his correspondence with Pascal develop the theory of probability. Pascal also worked on the concept of mathematical expectation and there is a distribution in probability named after him. In the 1700’s DeMoivre published the Doctrine of Chances, which contained a series of solved problems, such as: “Suppose that three tickets will be given prizes in a lottery having 40,000 tickets. What is the chance of winning at least one prize if you buy 8000 of those tickets?” Students often hear and occasionally use statements of probability in their daily lives. They note the weather forecasts when they wonder whether a game will be held or school canceled. They also use more ambiguous general phrases such as not likely, no way, and probably but, as with much of everyday speech, there are many misuses of probability terminology and concepts. Purpose: To introduce and develop the concept of probability.

Over twenty years, this author has been in the enterprise of teaching introductory statistics to an audience that is taking the class to satisfy their mathematics requirement. This is a challenging endeavor because the students have little prior knowledge about the discipline of statistics and many of them are anxious about mathematics and computation. Statistical concepts and examples are usually presented in a particular context. However, one obstacle in teaching this introductory class is that we often describe the statistical concepts in a context, such as medicine, law, or agriculture, that is completely foreign to the undergraduate student. The student has a much better chance of understanding concepts in probability and statistics if they are described in a familiar context. Many students are familiar with sports either as a participant or a spectator. They know of the popular athletes, such as Tiger Woods and Barry Bonds, and they are generally knowledgeable with the rules of the major sports, such as baseball, football, and basketball.
