New Directions Professorship
The IMA invites applications by established mathematicians for two Visiting Professorships for a period of 9 to 12 months including the thematic program Probability and Statistics in Complex Systems: Genomics, Networks, and Financial Engineering which runs from September 2003 through June 2004. Visiting Professors will enjoy an excellent research environment and stimulating scientific program with broad mathematical connections including probability, statistics, dynamical systems, network and graph theory, optimization, control, and visualization. They are expected to be resident and active participants in the program but are not assigned formal duties. The New Directions program will supply 50% of faculty salary up to $45,000 maximum. The Visiting Professor's home institution must commit to providing a minimum of 50% of academic year salary and all health and other relevant fringe benefits. The Marble Launcher is an essential tool for exploring coordinates in two dimensions. Cartesian coordinates describe where the marble takes off
and lands while polar coordinates describe the speed and angle at which it

Where We Are
Home
Overview The Department of Statistics and Applied Probability (DSAP) is one of the strongest academic units in the Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore. The Department was established in 1998 with the goals to advance statistical science, and, ultimately by its application, to improve and provide adequate services to our community. To achieve these goals, the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability offers training and research programs to develop and apply innovative statistical methods to problems of economics, finance, banking business, insurance, marketing research, engineering, human health and disease, including basic biomedical sciences. Biostatistics Initiative Faculty Members The Department has nearly 30 faculty members. The faculty members play a prominent role in statistics methodological research; and faculty are also very active in statistical consulting and in collaborative research, including having leadership roles in several large multidisciplinary applied research projects. Faculty Activities Students Enrollment and Support The graduate enrollment is steadily increasing, with over 35 students enrolled in a given year. Among these, close to a half would like to enroll in Biostatistics. In addition, there are around 760 students in its undergraduate statistics program every year. We anticipate up to thirty students will be enrolled in our biostatistics program. Financial support for graduate students is available, which comes mainly through the university scholarships.

Analytical techniques The authors assert that this book is intended to be 'an introductory text for students of engineering, science, and business studies who may not have any prior knowledge of probability and statistics and whose mathematical competencies may be restricted to a one semester course on algebra and calculus'. The content of the book is reasonably aligned to the needs of such (non-specialist) students, although the examples show a bias towards production processes, and hence will favour engineering students. Callender and Jackson reject the use of dedicated statistical software packages for teaching statistics on the grounds that, with them, 'the analysis is semi-automatic' whereas 'with spreadsheets this is not the case; the user has to set up the analysis', and the 'easy to use graphical facilities are an excellent aid to learning, giving an intuitive grasp of difficult concepts'. They also argue that 'the use of spreadsheets is widely recognised as a professional communication skill in science, engineering and business', and that therefore their use in the teaching of statistics to such non-specialists is justified.

In recent months there has been a great deal of discussion on the Allstat e-mail list regarding the use of spreadsheets for statistical analysis. This article seeks to review the capabilities of Excel 5.0 in the context of statistical education. It concludes that although Excel has a great deal to offer at the elementary level, it is of limited use to serious students of the subject.
Data handling
Possibly the most compelling reason for using Excel for statistical work is the ease with which data can be entered and manipulated. Data is easily imported from other applications (Lotus 123, Quattro pro, dBase) and from ASCII text files using the Text Wizard - a series of dialog boxes allowing you to choose the format in which data is stored on the worksheet, with very few restrictions. If data is entered from the keyboard in a recognisable sequence, the sequence can be extended simply by dragging the range. Days (Monday, Tuesday, ...), dates (01/10/96, 08/10/96, ...) and labels (Car1, Car2, ...) are all recognised, but not number patterns (1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, ...). Excel is particularly good at handling list data, laid out in columns with headers (e.g. Age, Sex, Height, ...), such as may result from a student survey. Once the headers are entered, a Data Form is automatically created to allow records to be entered, edited, and searched. A Data Filter can be used to hide all data not satisfying certain criteria, allowing the student to focus on particular subsets (e.g. males over 30). Unfortunately it is not possible to calculate functions just on the filtered data, a drawback of what is otherwise a delightful feature. LABORATORY OF PROBABILITY THEORY AND MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS
The laboratory was founded in 1961 by Aleksandr Alekseyevich Borovkov, now full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, but then still a young scientist, pupil of Academician A.N. Kolmogorov who had recommended the recent PhD to S.L.Sobolev for work in the Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Academy. Since then A.A. Borovkov is the permanent leader and organizer of a scientific team which constitutes a probabilistic school well known in the scientific world. At present, there work in the laboratory the Doctors of Sciences I.S. Borisov, S.G. Foss, B.I. Lotov, A.A. Mogul'skii, A.I. Sakhanenko, S.A. Utev, V.V. Yurinskii, the PhD's D.A. Korshunov, M.S. Sgibnev. Almost all of them are pupils of the Siberian School. At different times, there worked in the laboratory the Doctors of Sciences S.V. Nagaev, B.A. Rogozin, the PhD L.Ya. Savel'ev. Students observe and record the pulse rates of earthworms. They experiment to discover the responses of earthworms to different temperatures, and graph the results. In discussing why earthworms respond as they do, students learn about 'cold-blooded' animals, and the concept of adaptation. A background section is included.
