Investigations in Probability and Statistics Written by Celia Cuomo If your students groan at the mention of statistics, or go blank when you bring up probability, you might ask what they want to be when they grow up. Wall Street mogul? The next Freud? TV meteorologist? Well, there you go: they'll be using statistics and probability all the way up the ladder. This unit makes these subjects fun , and makes real-world connections students will use all their lives.
Students dive into probability as they play games using coins, spinners, dice, and Native American game sticks. They investigate chance and probability with concrete materials, learn how to gather and analyze data, make predictions, and draw conclusions. As they gain direct experience, they also build confidence in their ability to explore probability and statistics. The guide provides background information on these themes, with information on real-life connections and careers. The activities provide a solid basis for the development of much-needed (and often neglected) real-life understandings and skills, stressing cooperation along the way.
Time: Twelve or more 45- to 60-minute sessions.

The Probability and Statistics Department
The Probability and Statistics Department is part of the School of Mathematics and Statistics , which includes two other Departments, Applied Mathematics and Pure Mathematics, all of which are housed in the Hicks Building, which is near the centre of the University; in particular the Students Union, the Computer Centre and the Main Library are all nearby. In addition, however, the Department has a comfortable reading room containing a wide selection of postgraduate and research texts, and a number of the leading journals in Probability and Statistics. The Department has an extensive and very active programme of teaching and research. In addition, it has a long tradition of interest in the broader concerns of the subject: publications, professional activities, collaboration with researchers and teachers in other subjects, international contacts, consultancy, conferences, and so on. Great emphasis is placed on the practical application of statistical method in the outside world. This interest is reflected in the research work of staff and Ph.D. students and in the importance that is attached to the Department's Statistical Services Unit , which provides a comprehensive range of services to industry, commerce and the public services, including consultancy, courses and the development of computer software. The Unit has a Director and several full time consultants, as well as its own clerical staff. Other members of the academic staff act as specialist consultants as required. The staff of the Department also provides a consulting service to other departments within the University and in local hospitals, and is always willing to offer advice on the application of statistical method to problems from diverse fields.

    Barson also gives several excellent suggestions for extending this experiment. He suggests playing a game of hangman to see if this new knowledge assists them in discovering the secret word. Another suggestion was to examine the keys on a typewriter and explain their positioning based on this research. In the third follow-up activity the children are required to write three sentences about themselves without using any of these five most commonly used letters. I assigned this particular activity for homework that night, and many thought writing three sentences for homework would be a snap. But the next day my students came to class saying how much fun they'd had trying, although they found it impossible, to come up with three good, coherent sentences. This activity also generated much discussion.
    Another interesting activity in section two is a "True-False, Multiple Choice" worksheet. The task is to speculate what the odds are at passing a true-false test and a multiple choice test by just "guessing." Your students will enjoy taking this test. The children flip a coin (heads -true, tails -false) to determine the answer, summarize this information, and graph the data. What do you think the odds are?
    How many three-letter words can be made from the letters A, E, T, and S? is the initial challenge in the game "Making Words," found in section three - "Games People Win." Then, a little twist is added. You must now put all four letters (A, E, T, and S) in a container and remove three letters, one at a time. You must place the letters in front of you in the same order they were drawn. Yes, you don't always get a three-letter word! If you get a three-letter word you score a point. This continues for 20 rounds and the player with the most points wins. Our seventh grade students loved this game so much, they continued to play during recess. This is an excellent game to incorporate language skills into the math classroom.

    In spite of increased support for teaching probability and statistics in schools, significant problems have been reported. 1.Absence of probability and statistics lessons or courses in schools. (Barnett, 1988; Shaughnessy, 1992): To date, very little probability and statistics have been taught in our schools. 2.Teachers are not prepared to teach probability and statistics. Historically, teacher preparation programs have not systematically included probability and statistics for prospective mathematics teachers (Shaughnessy, 1992). 3.Student misconceptions and understanding. Conditional probability and the notion of independent events are reported as particularly difficult concepts for students to grasp (Falk, 1988).

    Probability and Statistics Welcome to the Statistical Laboratory in the Mathematics Department. The present members of staff of the Statistical Laboratory consist of a Professor in Probability, one Emeritus Professor, one Senior lecturer and three lecturers. There is a long tradition of mathematical statistics at Manchester; the chair in Mathematical Statistics is one of the oldest established chairs in the UK. Its previous holders include Maurice Bartlett and Peter Whittle. Present members of staff have made numerous and significant contributions to the theory of Markov, Branching, Levy and Point processes, Random fields, Random walks and Brownian motion, density estimation, resampling techniques, and medical statistics.
