Leonhard Euler (1707-83), a Swiss mathematician, made important contributions to practically every area of pure and applied mathematics. His influence was preeminent in analysis. Although his definition of a function was less precise than that now accepted, he was responsible for making the function concept and notation fundamental in analysis. Euler became totally blind in 1771 but loss of sight did not lessen his output, which included writings on optics, algebra, and the theory of the Moon's motion. Even after his death, his articles continued to appear in the press for nearly 50 more years.
To be a scholar of mathematics you must be born with talent, insight, concentration, taste, luck, drive and the ability to visualize and guess. ...Paul Halmos

Presentation by Albert Shulte
On April 25, 2002, at Elliot Hall on the Oakland University campus in Rochester Michigan, Dr. Shulte gave a talk on statistical education at the Kindergarten to 12th grade (K-12) level in Michigan. Dr. Shulte has taught extensively at the high school and university levels and has served as a consultant in mathematics education to the Oakland schools in Michigan. His PhD. dissertation was on the teaching of probability and statistics to the ninth grade general Mathematics students. He has served on the Joint Committee of ASA and NCTM on the K-12 teaching of statistics.
When asked what our Chapter could do for the advancement of statistics in the schools, he responded that we could hook up with AP Statistics teachers to be guest lecturers or speak at a Mathematics Association meeting.

  • (material: calendar or data sheet with weather conditions)
  • What’s in the Bag? – Give pairs of children 6 blue cubes, 4 green cubes, and 2 yellow cubes in a paper bag. Pairs take turns predicting what color cube will be picked. If a prediction is correct, the player receives one point. Pairs continue playing until each player has 20 turns. The player with the greatest score is the winner.

Resources for Teaching and Learning About Probability and Statistics By: Hea-Jin Lee May 1999 ( Updated January 2002 ERIC Clearinghouse for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education DIGEST
As increased use of technology and the empirical sciences spreads throughout the global community, the use of data and graphs to communicate information is ever increasing. Daily decision making and discussions of social issues are increasingly influenced by statistics and projected outcomes based on estimated probabilities. Unfortunately, most high school graduates have little or no background in the mathematics associated with calculating probabilities and interpreting statistics. Therefore, in order for our students to be adequately prepared to make informed decisions, schools need to provide greater attention to probability and statistics in mathematics and other courses. Numerous educators (NCTM, 1989; NRC, 1989; Shaughnessy, 1992) have recommended the introduction of concepts related to probability and statistics throughout the school years for all students, not just those students bound for college. Key Issues In spite of increased support for teaching probability and statistics in schools, significant problems have been reported.
