    Thematic Units
A thematic approach to cross-curriculum education has increased in popularity since the 1960s, when American schools experienced increasing pressures to improve "creativity" and problem solving skills. Educators view thematic units as tools that use interesting topics to guide students into learning situations. Thematic units link subject areas via a "theme topic" a basic concept easily adapted to each curriculum area. We suggest broad themes, which are easier to adapt within subjects. As students advance, themes should allow for more depth. Materials coming soon... Address:

For the special education teacher, thematic teaching can be very effective, because it organizes thought processes and gives a coordinated language base. The challenge special education teachers have, is not finding curriculum, it is adapting the curriculum to a wide variation of students placed in the classroom. Most classrooms have a variety of students with many different cognitive levels as well as different physical challenges. Materials and software programs need to be adapted so many skills can taught. This presentation will show how SoftTouch software can present the starting point for a thematic unit. The focus of this presentation is to provide teachers with not only multi-sensory accessible software but also the tools and materials that will empower them to create and adapt off-line materials to support their curriculum. The newly released "Old Mac Donald's Farm Deluxe" provides a variety accessible activities for students learning to use a mouse, switch and IntelliKeys. In addition to just enjoying the sounds and animation of the farm animals there are six major modules that have been developed to promote language development, fine motor skills and comprehension. Students learn to match animal mothers with their babies and with written text. They are developing fine motor skills as they master early mouse tracking skills. Several activities have additional sounds and animations to attract students who are learning to respond to simple sounds and colors.

Our preschool is comprised of three groups of students: Freshmen, Juniors and Seniors . At each stage of development children are introduced to a greater breadth of learning techniques and thematic units. Our children surprise us everyday with their capacity for learning. They are inquisitive, bright and eager to try new things. Our Freshman Class (ages 2 1/2 - 3) and Junior Class (older 3's) have a wonderful introduction to school. Teachers are sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of new students, particularly in transitioning students and parents through the separation process. Letters, numbers, colors, shapes and computers are taught in an engaging and concrete manner. Potty training is not a requirement for admission into these classes . Students participate in the entire core curriculum. Don't underestimate these youngsters. You'll be amazed how much your child will learn!
Seniors Stepping up to the senior class, 4 and 5 year old students prepare for elementary school. Some of the skills we work on are number identification and concepts, addition, subtraction and even fractions! Our language arts skills comprise journal writing, handwriting, phonemic awareness and phonics. Our science and social studies series coupled with "Weekly Reader" magazines complement our thematic units of study. All subjects are taught through small and whole group instruction. Seniors step up to this home base classroom for

    59. Thematic Literature And Curriculum For English Language Learners In Early Childh

Thematic Literature and Curriculum for English Language Learners in Early Childhood Education
Betty Smallwood, Center for Applied Linguistics
This digest provides early childhood educators with book selection criteria, literature-based teaching strategies, curricular topics, and book lists for representative topics appropriate for use with ELLs in early childhood settings.
      Book Selection Criteria
      • Does the book contain repeated, predictable language patterns? Such patterns include rhyming and repetition of sounds, words, refrains, or entire sentences. Are there clear illustrations that help tell the story? Teachers depend on pictures to explain new vocabulary and to hold the attention of the young learners. Photographs can capture hard-to-explain emotions, such as curiosity and excitement. When the teacher and student do not share a language, illustrations are often the most critical book selection criterion.
      Teaching Strategies
Many effective strategies for reading aloud with young children apply to ELLs (e.g., predicting from the book cover before reading, pointing to illustrations during reading, checking for comprehension upon completion). The strategies suggested below are especially useful for developing oral language and beginning literacy with students learning English as an additional language (Smallwood, 1998).
