Opinions! I have lots of them! I love to express them strongly! The purpose is to stimulate you to think and develop your own opinions. You don't have to believe mine! Don't Use Coloring Books! I want to say this opinion loudly and clearly - I don't like coloring books! Coloring books are unhealthy. They do not foster self-esteem. The implied message in a coloring book is "You can't draw so an adult artist has to draw for you." There is very little room for creativity. Coloring books have a definite "right" way to do them - color the tree green, stay inside the lines. Trees are not solid green and when a child has the eye-hand coordination to color inside the lines, he has the ability to draw the lines. Give your child a blank piece of paper instead. He can’t make a mistake. It’s his paper. When a child creates, he is choosing to do work. With a blank piece of paper, he needs to think. This is where he can experiment and explore and solve problems, without the possibility of failure. Coloring books are not creative. Creativity is one of my four main values for children. (The other three are curiosity, confidence, and motivation) Creativity is a way of thinking. It can and should happen in all areas of our lives, but it is automatic in art. When a child paints, he explores and discovers the feel of paint oozing out of his brush, the speed of drips and how to stop them, the blending shades of colors. The more a child creates, the more he practices thinking creatively.

. From the first exuberant slap of a fat baby hand in the oatmeal, through tentative crayon marks and collages of sticky-back paper, made-up songs and more-than half-believed-in imaginary playmates, your child is growing in the ability to explore the world and to have an impact on it. The power to change a roundish lump of playdough into a flat one, the fun of taking an every-day activity and making a silly song about it, the insights that come with the "pretend" games are the motivators for the natural creativity that is so often lost before we're out of childhood. AS A PARENT OR PROVIDER Let your child have as much freedom as possible in the area of creative play. For the young toddler this means blocks, dress-up clothes, rhythm instruments and other "do-it-yourself" activities should always be available, plus the supervised use of sand, water, crayons, playdough, and paint. Don't forget to allow and appreciate creative (but not destructive) use of ordinary household things pans, cans, couch cushions. Older toddlers and preschoolers should be encouraged to learn and follow rules that will allow them free access to art materials as soon as possible. A 2 1/2 year old who has a low art drawer in the kitchen has a creative head start over the same-age child who has to wait until someone has time to get the crayons down from a high shelf.

Home Preschool Articles Cultivating Self Expression Through Art [National Association for the Education of Young Children]
Over the years, educators, psychologists, and philosophers have come to appreciate the value of children's art and its important role in early childhood education. It is now agreed, by many in the field, that exploring and creating with art helps children to become:
  • More sensitive to the physical environment
    - for instance, shape, size, and colour.
    Promotes cognitive development
    - decision-making, nonverbal communication, and problem solving.
Increases their social and emotional development
    - a sense of individuality, appreciation of others' work, and sharing.
  • Young children who are encouraged to engage in expressive art activities also gain a sense of accomplishment and grow toward achieving independence and autonomy.
Fostering an appreciation for art during the early years is not limited to museum trips or formal training. In fact, parents and caregivers need only provide inexpensive art materials, interest, and encouragement. Following are some useful tips to inspire the Picasso in your child.

    Perfect Gifts for the Holidays
    by Marie-Helen Goyetche
"I use my children's wish list for gift giving but the gifts stay in my home. We enjoy playing together so they receive gifts we can all share. My ex-husband and I discuss the gift giving first, so we know who is buying what," says Elisa V. Buying holiday presents is a challenge for all parents. What to buy, whether or not you know what they have? As soon as they are old enough, you'll probably receive lists of toys wanted. Here are some ideas for those that don't get a list. The toddler: Young children love building toys. The bigger the block, the better. (Caution: younger children have choked on the small mini ones.) You'll find cardboard, soft sponge, wooden, plastic, and fitting blocks. Other toy ideas for toddlers are: board books, puzzles, and balls. The pre-schooler: Through art, children learn to create. Make an art kit using an brief case to hold art supplies. Fill it up with: various papers, different crayons and markers, scissors, glue, stickers, and other office supplies. Other toy ideas for pre-schoolers are: books with tapes, action figures, dolls, playdough, puzzles, memory games, balls and hoops. The school-age child: They love to build and create, they can read directions and are more patient. Model cars, and crafting kits are great gift ideas. Other toy ideas for school -age children are: art supplies, computer games, board games, sports accessories, science kits, books, and 3-D puzzles. "I get the ideas from their lists, but I always like to sneak surprises in, little things they didn't ask for. I like computer games, videos, video games, books, things that are small, and can be put away at my house, (or theirs) and things that retain their value. Good quality expensive toys, are to me, worth the investment," says Sally M. "I really don't have any regrets, except maybe when I over did it, (to compensate for whatever feelings of guilt I may have)."

Re: color wheel exercises Posted by lola rodríguez (200.62.60.130) on January 13, 2003 at 08:26:49: In Reply to: color wheel exercises posted by Lola Rodríguez on January 13, 2003 at 08:25:31: : : In response to the second commentator: "I don't know if you are referring to our programs (How Great Thou ART Publications) when you comment that you are against students "coloring within the lines." I agree strongly with your approach and have a real aversion to coloring books, tracing, and even computer art, being that they do not enhance one's God given abilities. However, what we do in our programs is teach “color theory” with each one of our exercises. What better way to learn about the color wheel, primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors, complementary colors, analogous colors, etc., than by having beginning students color in certain exercises to learn this.
: : Likewise, I have found with beginning students that it is very difficult to teach beginning painting because most of the students will falter in simply drawing and laying in their composition. Our success in this area has come by dividing the two: we teach drawing and painting separately. Thus, with our painting program we have students paint in an illustration that is already set before them on a "paint card". This greatly decreases their frustration yet greatly inspires them with the academics of color theory along with learning many of the basic principles of beginning painting like holding a brush, mixing colors, and how to keep a palette. We have found over the years with homeschoolers that our greatest success comes when we not only keep it very simple but also very academic.
