    01 EUSTHENOPTERON (Greek:'strong fin')
The ancestors of the four-legged land vertebrates are to be found among the fleshy-finned fishes. The only surviving fleshy-fins, however, are the famous coelacanth (Latimeria) of the Indian Ocean and three genera of lungfish, all of which are cousins of the land vertebrates rather than their ancestors. More typical was Eusthenopteron from the Upper Devonian (350 million years ago) of North America and Europe. This carnivorous fresh-water fish, 1-2 feet long, had lobe like fins with strong muscular bases, nostrils which opened into the mouth and primitive lungs. In times of drought It could crawl on land from pool to pool in search of water and food. 02 ICHTHYOSTEGA (Greek: 'fish roof')
Half-way from fleshy-finned fish to amphibian was lchthyostega, 3 feet long, from rocks of eastern Greenland laid down in fresh water at the end of the Devonian period (345 million years ago). It still had a tail-fin like that of a fish and a remnant of the bones covering the gill-chamber but it is considered to be the earliest known amphibian because of the well developed limbs and limb girdles which are essentially those of a land animal, and the backbone was strengthened to support its weight when out of water. lchthyostega was probably truly amphibious in its habits. 03 ERYOPS (Greek: 'long face')
This was a typical member of the labyrinthodonts, the large amphibians of the Carboniferous, Permian and Triassic. Eryops itself lived in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico in Early Permian times (about 260 million years ago). It was a large, bulky animal, 5-6 feet long, which probably lived a truly amphibious life like that of modern crocodiles; the rather flattened head, armed with big teeth, suggests that it was a fish-eater. The backbone and other parts of the skeleton were very strongly built; it crawled slowly and awkwardly on its belly, pushing with its short bent legs. Bony nodules in the leathery skin formed a heavy armour.

Prehistoric Animals Dinosaurs are the prehistoric animals, which ruled earth for nearly 150 million years and suddenly became extinct at the end of the cretaceous period. The change of climate, paucity of food and reduction of favourable areas for development were probably the factors for mass mortality and extinction of these dinosaurs. The prehistoric animals such as triceratops, brontosaurs, tyrannosaurus, deinotherium and woolly rhinoceros are on display. Triceratops
The dinosaurs are the prehistoric animals, which lived during the geological past and literally means 'terrible lizards'. Triceratops is a horned dinosaur which lived during the cretaceous period. It was about 20 to 25 feet long and possessed three long horns on its head and an armour of bony plates all over its back.
Tyrannosaurus The dinosaurs are the prehistoric animals, which literally means 'terrible lizards'. The tyrannosaurus is an amazing reptile. It is nearly 50 feet long and 24 feet in height. It lived during the cretaceous period.

Answers from Dr. Mark D. Uhen
Q: We know that predatory sharks once came in a much larger size (megalodon). But do we have any evidence of the prehistoric existence of an outrageously large whale?
    A:
This one is easy. The answer is no. The largest whale ever to have lived is the blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus , and it is alive today. No fossil whales that we know of are as large as the blue whale.
Q: If Basilosaurus is a type of extinct whale, why does it have the name "King Lizard?"
    A:
An excellent question. The name Basilosaurus was applied to a fossil found in Louisiana because at the time, the person describing it thought it was a giant sea reptile of some sort. Later, when it was discovered that the animal was actually a mammal, someone else tried to change the name, but according to the naming rules, once you have a name on an animal, you are stuck with it, no matter how inappropriate it is.
Q: How do you find out what a prehistoric creature ate or what ate it?
    A:
The first thing that we do to figure out what an animal ate is to look at their teeth. If we look at animals today, we see that animals that eat meat have triangular, blade-like teeth, and animals that eat plants have rectangular, bumpy or ridged teeth. We can also look at the way the teeth are worn to find out about how they used their teeth, which can often tell us more about diet. Lastly, sometimes we get stomach contents preserved along with the skeletons of prehistoric animals. In fact, we have found the stomach contents of both Basilosaurus and Dorudon, and we know that both ate a variety of fish.

SECTION 3 Look to the Present to See the Past. Ponder a mystery Howdid prehistoric animals live? What did they eat? How did they move?
    http://www.sdnhm.org/exhibits/future/fossilmysteries/section3.html
Please read the following exhibit description and submit your comments below. SECTION 3
Look to the Present to See the Past Ponder a mystery: How did prehistoric animals live? What did they eat? How did they move? The big idea: By comparing fossil and modern animals through the lens of mechanics, we can "see" prehistoric animals' lifestyles, diet, and locomotion.
    Click for larger image.
Themes: Biomechanics, comparative anatomy Explore the setting: Eocene lagoon and woodland, 34 to 55 million years ago Use science tools:
    • Compare the anatomical structure of prehistoric animals to their modern analogs to understand what these animals looked like and how they moved. Compare fossil plants to modern plants to discern ancient climate patterns.
Examine the evidence (the present is the key to the past):
    • Fossils: miacid, protoredont, brontothere, tapir, hyaenodon, condylarth, crocodile, notharctyon (lemur-like primate), microfossils (teeth) of bats and snakes Modern bones: coyote, ocelot, sheep, rhinoceros, crocodile, lemur Fossil and modern plants: lily pads, palms, ficus, avocado, tropical hardwoods
