Dr. Ed Vavra's KISS Approach to Sentence Structure Return to the Instructional Rules of the Game Menu Prefixes and Suffixes Note: This page needs a lot more work. Suffixes A suffix is a group of letters, often a syllable (technically a morpheme) that is added to the end of a word. Suffixes affect both the meaning and the part of speech of a word. Note that suffixes are "typical" of various parts of speech that means that some words that end with the letters of a suffix are not the typical part of speech. Also remember that KISS grammar determines the part of speech of a word by how it is used, not by its form, and not by what the dictionaries say. In "Go slow," "slow" is used as an adverb, and thus KISS grammar considers it to be one.
Suffixes Typical of Nouns Some suffixes are characteristic of nouns:
Suffix Nouns -ance / -ence
(the result of) alliance
confidence
preference
tolerance ation
(the result of) concentration
dissemination relation -er/-or (one who) player teacher surveyor -ist (one who) careerist realist violinist -ment (the result of) accomplishment agreement preferment Suffixes Typical of Adjectives Some suffixes are characteristic of adjectives: Suffix Adverbs -er (in comparison to) clearer prettier warmer -est (superlative in comparison to) clearest prettiest warmest -ful (full of) colorful hopeful mournful sorrowful Suffixes Typical of Verbs Some suffixes are characteristic of verbs:

Week 6 (February 11): Word-formation (prefixes and suffixes)
Your encyclopedia articles had been due on Friday 14th, though I've just extended this deadline until Monday 17th (6pm).
Pick one of the following prefixes or suffixes, and explain how it has been most “productive” in Early Modern and/or Present-Day English. The OED has entries for affixes, and I’ve also put Marchand’s Categories and types of present-day English wordformation on reserve (PE 1175 M3). You might consider:
  • how the affix came in (if it wasn't already native)
  • what part(s) of speech it attaches itself to, and what part(s) of speech it forms.
  • whether it attaches to bases of native and/or of Romance (Latin, French) origin.
  • whether it likes to combine with other affixes (e.g., un happi ness
  • whether it competes with other affixes (e.g. -ness vs -ity
  • whether the words it forms come from specific registers of English (e.g., science)
  • whether the words it forms have particular connotations (would you want to be an - ist ) or an -eer
Please email me before 5 pm on Friday January 24th with your top three choices (i.e., “ist”, “ness”, and “y”). I’ll email the class by Sunday afternoon when your names are up on the web pages.

(Posted to sci.crypt.research, 18th Nov 1995)
1. Introduction This note is a follow on to a previous posting entitled 'A Class of Steganographic Protocols' (sci.crypt.research, 29th Nov 1994). As background, some comments from William Friedman are apposite. (Taken from: Special Text No 165, 'Elementary Military Cryptography', 1935 edition, Part 4, Section XX) h. The formation and adoption of fixed habits as regards the phraseology of messages, arrangement of contents, use of punctuation, etc., is a most dangerous practice, and will assist the enemy cryptanalysts very greatly. Routine reports of all kinds should be sent by means and agencies not susceptible of interception. i. The beginnings and endings of all secret messages are cryptographically their weakest spots and are usually the points first to be attacked and solved by the enemy cryptanalysts. If the address and signature of a message must be cryptographed, this should be done according to a different system than is applied to the interior of the message. Sometimes a special address and signature code must be provided for this purpose, which code must not be employed for any other purpose. The terms 'beginnings and endings' can be expanded by including the notions of edges, boundaries and discontinuities. Also, the principle should be extended to all processes that are involved in encipherment.

Class Organisation: individually
Time: 15 mins
Resources: none
Description: Start with prefixes, write one on board (e.g. in-). Ss have 2 mins to write as many words that use that prefix as they can. They can't have words like interesting as it is not a word without the 'in' part. You can also keep score to add interest. Maybe do the suffix part in another lesson.

The Language of Science Science contains a language all its own. The main reason individuals find it difficult to understand many of the sciences is its difficult looking vocabulary. Large words are associated with difficulty, and difficulty equates to hard. So by the vocabulary alone science is hard. Actually, scientific vocabulary is a hodge podge of roots, prefixes, and suffixes put together to describe events, body parts, or functions, etc. observed by the individuals studying the process. Below you will find a list of the more common prefixes and suffixes and their meaning(s). If one can learn their meaning(s) , they will be well on their way to understanding the vast vocabulary of science.
