Prefixes and Suffixes Books l Lessons l Latin Derivatives l More Latin derivatives l l Domus The words prefix and suffix are derivatives of the Latin root fix , which comes from the Latin verb figere , meaning to fasten or attach one thing to another pre fix prefix to fasten before
Prefixes are fastened before a root. suf fix suffix to fasten behind
Suffixes are fastened behind, or after, a root.
The word suffix is a good example of assimilation . The prefix is sub . But sub fix takes more effort to pronounce correctly so, over time, the b in sub was assimilated , made to be the same as the f in the root fix resulting in the word suffix , which is easier to pronounce! The word assimilation is, itself, the result of assimilation using the root simil
from the Latin adjective similis , meaning similar ad + simil + ation = ad simil ation Ad similation is more difficult to say than as similation so the d was assimilated, made to be the same as the

Characteristic (Functional) Groups
R-3.2.1 Prefixes and suffixes
R-3.2.1.1 The presence of a characteristic group can be denoted by a prefix or suffix attached to the parent name (with elision of terminal "e", if present). Such prefixes and suffixes are illustrated in Table 5 . Additional details for the use of functional prefixes and suffixes are found in Section R-4 (Name Construction). R-3.2.1.2 Affixes used to denote ionic or radical centres in a parent structure, classified according to the type of formal operation by which the ion or radical may be considered to be derived (see R-5.8 ), are given in Table 6 . Suffixes are added to the name of a parent hydride in the customary manner or serve as endings to names of characteristic groups. When needed, ionic centres are expressed as prefixes that terminate with endings given in the column labelled "Substituent prefix ending", for example, ethan-1-ylium-1-yl, pyridinio, sulfonato, and propan-2-id-2-yl; for radical centres, the prefix "ylo-" is added in front of the name of the substituent prefix, for example, 2-yloethyl. In replacement nomenclature, the replacement prefixes are modified to end as shown in the column labelled "Replacement prefix endings", for example, azonia and boranylia. Two or more such operations are indicated by an appropriate multiplying affix, for example, "-diide", and "-tris(ylium)". Additional details for the use of ionic prefixes and suffixes are given in Section

Prefixes and Suffixes Prefixes and suffixes are used to define the dialing operation for each zone. For example, if the international prefix is 00, there is no need to enter 00 in each international number. If you live in a country with different telephone zones, when entering a local number, you can omit the zone prefix and only enter the local part of the number (such as "555-1234"). Simply set the number zone to Local Zone . For the numbers of other zones, enter the zone along with the number (such as "(212) 555-1234") and set the number zone to Interzone In the dialing setup, the local zone prefix is usually empty. Some countries neither need any interzone prefix. In most other countries, the interzone prefix is 0. The international prefix is usually 00. Enter the country code along with the number (such as "(33) 1 45 67 89 01") and set the number zone to

In 1066 England was conquered by William, duke of Normandy, which is in northern France. For several hundred years after the Norman invasion, French was the language of court and polite society in England. It was during this period that many French words were borrowed into English. Linguists estimate that some 60 percent of our common everyday vocabulary today comes from French. Thus many Latin words came into English indirectly through French. Many Latin words came into English directly, though, too. Monks from Rome brought religious vocabulary as well as Christianity to England beginning in the sixth century. From the Middle Ages onward many scientific, scholarly, and legal terms were borrowed from Latin.

In this context it is interesting also whether distinct prefixes and suffixes differ in frequency in the German language area. We consider
  • the prefixes be- er-
and
  • the suffixes -chen -heit -keit -lein -ung.
The frequencies of all words with the selected prefix or suffix are added within each district and then divided by the number of texts in this district. The results are presented in maps by shades of gray colour. See e.g. Figure as to suffix -ung
Figure: Average Frequency of the Suffix -ung
The cluster analysis of average frequencies of distinct prefixes and suffixes does not open new results. There are often differences between the frequencies in big towns and in surrounding regions, but there is no even distribution as to whatever points of view, not among the single prefixes and suffixes also, not as to a geographically based difference suffixes -chen and -lein , which had been expected.
