Aboriginal Pottery Gallery
Aboriginal pottery and ceramics are a relatively recent development in Aboriginal art. While pottery is not a part of traditional Aboriginal culture, nevertheless it has become an important element in the wide range of techniques used in artistic expression. This is most stikingly evident in the work of the Hermannsburg Potters from west of Alice Springs in central Australia. What began initially as a training workshop in late 1990 in the outstations around Hermannsburg has developed into a thriving pottery studio with an international reputation. For more information on the development of Hermannsburg, go to our pages on Hermannsburg Potters In a small pottery studio in the centre of the community, the Hermannsburg Potters have forged their own unique type of ceramics. Using coil methods, their identifiable style features small figures of birds, animals, lizards or plants which they sculpt on the lid. Decoration which narrates the stories of the figures continues down across the sides of the pot and completes it as a unit. The example shown right is a Perentie (lizard) pot by Rahel Kngwarria Ungwanaka. This Aboriginal pottery gallery is part of the Aboriginal Art Online set of virtual galleries. It has been set up as a separate domain to allow direct access to a selection of Aboriginal pottery and ceramic works.
