Simply by looking at the magnificent ceramics created by pre-Columbian civilizations we can see that this land possesses an extraordinary artistic heritage. While they follow traditional methods of pottery making, they have introduced new designs and produced astonishing Contemporary Ceramic Art. What is Raku?
Raku is a Japanese inspired method of firing that creates unpredictable smoke patterns and spectacular metallic and crackle effects in the glazes. After initially firing the piece in a kiln, it is glazed and fired a second time. When the temperature of the piece reaches between 1600 and 1800 degrees and the glaze has melted, the piece is placed in combustible materials (leaves, sawdust and pine needles) in a metal container and covered. This is called post reduction during which the oxygen is burned out of the glaze taking the colorants back to a metal producing the metallic lusters seen in raku.

The technique of RAKU firing
The Happiness is in the Fortune!
The Raku pottery barn
The History of RAKU ware
The technique of Raku ware was first developed in Japan by Chojiro the founder of the Raku dynasty, in the 16th century. At the beginning of the 16th century, colored glazed potteries were produced in the region of Kyoto, in Japan, using a technology originating from China. This technique was then employed by Chojiro to produce tea bowls for the tea ceremony. These tea bowls were called "Rakuyaki" (Raku wares), from the name of "Jurakudai", the palace of Chojiro's protector. Chojiro adopted the name Raku, which can be translated as joy, happiness, for his tea bowls and the name Raku even became attached to Chojiro's family. The main characteristics of the original Raku tea bowls were simplicity of forms and absence of decoration in a perfect harmony with the spirit of the tea ceremony. Raku has evolved since then to become a popular form of art.

Pure Magical R ealism
Why is it said that in a small, lost town of Chihuahua, Mexico exists the largest concentration of artists on the face of this earth? Why are some of the contemporary works of art that are created in this little town sold for incredibly high prices on the international market? Why are thousands of tourists from the United States, Europe and Japan, as well as other parts of the world, coming to this place? Why have I heard many people say that since they became familiar with these works of art, their lives have never been the same? THE STORY OF MATA ORTIZ Twelve-year-old Juan Quezada had abandoned school to work in the fields and make his contribution to the low family economy. His surroundings were the same as they had been 600 years ago for the members of a sophisticated culture called " Casas Grandes ", who erected the city of
