Essential Info General Information
Portugal is an extension of the mountainous formations of the Iberian Peninsula. In its terrain two types of relief are distinguished: the South and North of the river Tagus.
In the north the relief is more rugged, slopes are steep and cut by deep valleys. The weather sculptured higher grounds, giving them a distinct look of the Spanish landscape.
In the South of the river Tagus, the land is more uniform, marshy and of scarce relief. The predominant vegetation, in this region, is limited to plants and shrubs (charnecas) or mediterranean trees (cork-trees, scarlet-oaks, fig-trees and olive-trees).
The hydrographic network is rich, gaining discharge and importance in rivers that begin in Spain, as the rivers Minho, douro, Tagus and Guadiana that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The estuaries of the Douro and the Tagus constitute important anchorages, having bestowed on the Portuguese nation an important natural platform for discovery and overseas commerce. Partner Rodrigo Pereira Coutinho (34, Lisbon - Portugal) Portugal Introduction Background: Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal entered the EC in 1985. Viseu PORTUGAL - Geography Officially Portuguese Republic, republic (1992 est. pop. 10,448,000), 35,553 sq mi (92,082 sq km), SW Europe, on the western side of the Iberian Peninsula and including the Madeira Islands and the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. Portugal is bordered by Spain on the east and north and by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and south. The capital and by far the largest city is Lisbon. The country is crossed by rivers rising in Spain and flowing to the Atlantic; among them are the Douro, the Tagus, the Sado, and the Guadiana. The river valleys support agriculture, and vineyards are maintained in the Douro and Tagus valleys. On the lower hillslopes there are olive groves; grains are grown and livestock are raised on the flatter uplands as well as on the plains near the coast. In addition to the capital, other notable cities are Oporto, Coimbra, Setúbal, Braga, Évora, and Faro. The republic, including the island groups, is divided into 18 administrative districts, although the names of the six historic provinces are still used. Through a 1987 agreement, Portugal's last overseas territory, Macao, will revert to Chinese sovereignty in 1999. The majority of the Portuguese people are Roman Catholic. Portugal has 11 universities, including ones at Coimbra, Oporto, and Lisbon.

Study abroad participants will earn course credit in the Department that can be applied to their major and/or minor programs of study.
  • The Spain/Portugal/Morocco Program, May/June 2003
The Department is planning a study abroad summer program for 2003 that includes Lisbon, the Douro Valley, and Oporto in Portugal; Madrid, Seville, Córdoba, Granada, and Cadiz in southern Spain; Gibraltar; and Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, and Marrakesh in Morocco. The program cost will be approximately $3000, not including summer tuition. Students must enroll for at least 3 hours of course work, with an additional 3 hours of independent study available. Independent study requires the development of a research project under the supervision of the participating faculty that addresses an aspect of sustainable development, land-use management, resource use, park management, biosphere reserves, or other similar topic that fits with the program themes and places visited. Graduate students also can enroll in Sustainable Development (Geog 571) for 3 credit hours.
