Marco Polo
(b. c. 1254, Venice [Italy], or Curzola, Venetian Dalmatia [now Kor c ula, Croatia]d. Jan. 8, 1324, Venice), Venetian merchant, adventurer, and outstanding traveler, who journeyed from Europe to Asia in 1271-95, remaining in China for 17 of those years, and whose Il milione ("The Million"), known in English as the Travels of Marco Polo, became a geographical classic.
Travels of the Polo family
Marco found his way paved by the pioneering efforts of his ancestors and especially of his father, Niccolò, and his uncle Maffeo. The family had traded with the Middle East for a long time, apparently reaching a position of considerable wealth and prestige. Although it is not quite clear if the family was actually of the nobility, the point lost much of its typically medieval relevance in a city of republican and mercantile traditions such as Venice. bring back some oil from the lamp burning at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Marco himself had, meanwhile, been born in or around 1254. (This date, like nearly all the others concerning major events in his life, is conjectural.) Nothing is known of his early years in Venice, although it seems fairly certain that he learned little or no Latin. He was a lad of 15 or 16 when he first met his father, on the latter's return from the East in 1269.

MARCO POLO
"I did not tell half of what I saw"
Marco Polo came into the world in 1254. His father, the explorer Nicolo Polo, had left Marco's mother when she was pregnant. Marco lived in a city called Venice. It wasn't the best place for growing up. By the time Marco's father returned, Marco was 14 years old! When his father decided to go on another exploration, he agreed to take Marco with him. A few years later, Marco Polo, his father, and his father's friend left on a long trip. On their trip they visited many places. On this trip, Marco Polo discovered eye glasses, ice-cream, spaghetti, and the riches of Asia! When he returned, no one believed his stories of the riches he found in Asia. Marco Polo showed them some of the riches he had brought home. That made Marco Polo famous. When Marco was near death, a priest came in his room to ask him if he'd like to admit that his stories were false. Instead, Marco said,"I did not tell half of what I saw". Those were his last words. Marco Polo was a great explorer. He was very brave. Marco was not scared at all when they left to go on the trip. He was also very determined. When people would not believe his stories of his discoveries, he was determined to make them believe him. Marco Polo was very courageous too. He wasn't scared of the people in the different countries he visited. Marco Polo was a very brave, determined, and courageous explorer.

He left in 1271 (he was a teenager at the time) with his father (Nicolo Polo) and uncle (Maffeo Polo); they spent about 24 years traveling. [Nicolo and Maffeo had previously made a trip to China, from 1260-1269, during which the Kublai Khan (the conqueror of China) requested holy oil blessed by the Pope.] Polo sailed south from Venice, Italy, in the Mediterranean Sea to the Middle East. They then went southeast overland to Persia (now Iran), then through the Pamir Mountains and the Gobi Desert, to Beijing, China. They explored the area south of Beijing, including Yunan and Szechuan. Returning to Beijing, they traveled east to Tankchow (at the mouth of the Yangtse River), then south to Hangchow, China. They then sailed south along the coast of China, to what are now Vietnam and Sumatra. They sailed west to Sri Lanka and India, and then back to Ormuz (on the Persian Gulf). They went northwest overland to the Black Sea, then the Mediterranean Sea, and back to Venice, Italy.

MARCO POLO Merchant / Explorer As a teenager Polo travelled to China (then known as Cathay) with his father and uncle. The trio spent 20 years at the court of Kublai Khan this at a time when few Europeans had visited that country. After his return to Venice Polo collected the stories of his travels into a book, Il Milione (also known as The Travels of Marco Polo ), which was widely read and is the basis of his fame. Polo is now remembered as the man who introduced Europeans to the Orient, and his name is synonymous with exotic travel. Some historians have claimed that Polo made the whole story up, but this has never been proved.

Marco Polo's written accounts of his travels were the first Western record of porcelain, coal, gunpowder, printing, paper money, and silk; Polo wrote "Book of Ser Marco Polo" around 1298.

That would be the Warduj, boiling through rapids below the track we followed. We were in another battered pickup truck, driven by a fellow named Agha. What I most remember about Agha is the smile perpetually creasing his beard, even as he forced his precious truck over rocks as if it were invincible. Every half hour or so he stopped to refill the radiator.
At about 9,000 feet (2,750 meters) the Warduj became a gentle stream braided across a wide valley of lush grass. Over the centuries thousands of caravans have camped in that idyllic place, and I have no doubt that the Polos stayed a couple of days to rest their animals. Then they rode across a low rise to the Pyandzh, as the upper Amu Darya is known, and followed that river into the valley that Marco called Vocan.

Marco Polo By Rebecca G. My report is on Marco Polo, an Italian traveler and explorer. First I shall tell you about his life. Next I shall tell you about his explorations. Then I shall tell about the dangers he faced. Then I shall tell you why he should win the Explorer of the Century Award. Finally, I shall discuss me as an explorer. Some interesting facts about Marco Polo's life are that he was the first European to cross the entire continent of Asia and leave a record of what he saw and heard. He explored China and many other places. Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy in or around 1254. There is no record of his early life. His father was a merchant. His mother died when he was 15. He traded silk, fabric, gold, and silver with the Middle East. He started exploring in 1271 and ended in 1295. When he was 17 he went on a courageous journey to China with his father and uncle. Marco Polo served as a government official while over there. He spoke four languages and was wealthy. Marco Polo died in 1324 when he was 70 years old. During his explorations Marco Polo saw different lands and lifestyles, dress, customs, architecture, languages, races, and governments. He went to Bukhoro, Uzbekistan, to China in 1260. Two years later, he went to Akko, Israel, to the Persian Golf, north through Iran to present-day Amu-Darya, up the Oxus the Pamir to present-day Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and across the Gobi Desert. He reached Shang-tu in 1275. They left China in 1292 as escorts for a Mongol princess traveling by sea to marry a Persian prince in Iran. They got to that country by Sumatra, near Southern India and then past Tabriz in northwest Iran. They went across the east coast of the Black Sea and past Constantinople, and returned from China in 1295. When they got back to Venice his family, friends, and servants didn't recognize him. He even spoke with an accent. In 1299 he got married and had three daughters.
