Lichens
Air Pollution, Lichens and Mosses
by Kevin J. Lyman
EDITOR'S NOTE:
A s early as the mid 1800's, botanists became aware that lichens and mosses were becoming uncommon in areas within and surrounding large towns and cities. They began to recognize that air pollution emitted from these urban areas was affecting the colonization and growth of these organisms. I n 1866, William Nylander, a Finnish naturalist, was the first to link the disappearance of lichens and air pollution. He noticed that some lichen species present within Luxembourg Gardens, Paris, were missing in other parts of the city. He attributed these differences to air quality. Over the next thirty years, fumes from coal-burning industrial furnaces gradually led to the eradication of the lichen population within the park. A long with lichens, mosses too have been disappearing from large cities since the late 1800's. Even though some species of mosses and lichens can be found in the harshest environments (Antarctic, Arctic and deserts), most species are very sensitive to air pollution. There are, however, a few species that can survive in areas where the pollution levels are relatively high and there are several other species that can tolerate moderate levels of air pollution. By knowing which of these species are most sensitive to air pollution and documenting their presence or absence, it is easy to determine how "clean" or "dirty" the air is. S ulfur dioxide (SO ) does the most widespread damage to lower plants, even though it is only one of several air pollution components in the atmosphere. Sulfur dioxide pollution is the result of industrial and urban emissions.

pollution: an overview
Pollution is the contamination of air, water, or earth by harmful substances. Concern for pollution developed alongside concerns for the environment in general. See Environmental Law . The advent of automobiles, increased chemical wastes, nuclear wastes, and accumulation of garbage in landfills created a need for legislation specifically aimed at decreasing pollution. Among the landmark acts designed to preserve our environment is the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act ( et seq ); a comprehensive regulatory statute aimed at controlling solid waste disposal. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 ( et seq ) aims to safely dispose of nuclear wastes. The Clear Air Act was first enacted in 1970, it was later amended in 1977 and again in 1990; with its present form embodied in et seq . Like this examples demonstrate, most environmental regulations are federal in nature. Among the types of pollution, the one that has existed longer than any other is water pollution. Its consequences are readily seen when pollutants reach groundwater reservoirs, creating serious health hazards to people drinking the water. The current version of the Federal Clean Water Act can be found at

Summary: The environmental issues concerning the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea, such as the presence of polluting substances have been examined in this study. The conclusion calls for a collective effort by the littoral states to collectively prevent further pollution. Text: The Persian Gulf and its Ecological State The Persian Gulf is a partially closed sea of salty water with an average depth of 35 meters. It joins free international waters through the Strait of Hormuz. A variety of factors have all combined to threaten its environment and its specific ecological characteristics. Among them are its higher rate of water evaporation than fresh water supply, and most significantly, the extended drilling and oil extraction projects that take place here, enabling lucrative exports for the littoral states. The annual water evaporation rate in the Persian Gulf ranges from 150 to 400 cm. This is a high rate compared to other marine areas such as the Mediterranean Sea where evaporation hardly reaches an annual 15 cm. Moreover, the salinity of the water intensifies from the Strait of Hormuz to the northwestern parts, measuring 38 units per thousand in the strait to between 60 to 70 units per thousand in Khour Musa.

Wastewater Pollution in China by Kris Min ABSTRACT Wastewater pollution has always been a major problem throughout the world. The lack of suitable water used for drinking, agriculture, farming, etc. has declined through the years. With a shortage of water throughout the world, proper methods of treating and recycling water is the key goal in sustaining our limited water resource supply. Geographically speaking, the wastewater pollution within China has affected the environment, society, and agriculture. The water pollution crisis in China has brought up an issue of efficient wastewater treatment methods to help alleviate their problems. Throughout this paper, we will discuss the topics on the effects of wastewater pollution towards the environment and the society (health factors, agriculture, economic impacts, etc). At the same time, proposals for wastewater treatment procedures and facilities to help the water crisis in China will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The lack of clean water has always been an issue of environmental concern all over the world. This environmental issue is mainly stressed in developing countries today. The main sources of water pollution are: industrial (chemical, organic, and thermal wastes), municipal (largely sewage consisting of human wastes, other organic wastes, and detergents), and agricultural (animal wastes, pesticides, and fertilizers) (Brower et.al, 1990). For the past several years, China has been affected with the water pollution crisis. Three examples of wastewater pollution crisis in China are the City of Tianjin, the Chao Lakes and Xian City.

Air Pollution
When people think about air pollution, they usually think about smog, acid rain, CFC's, and other forms of outdoor air pollution. But did you know that air pollution also can exist inside homes and other buildings? It can, and every year, the health of many people is affected by chemical substances present in the air within buildings. A great deal of research on pollution is being conducted at laboratories and universities. The goals of the research are to find solutions and to educate the public about the problem. Two places where this type of work is being done are LBNL and the University of California, Berkeley Let's take a closer look at the various types of air pollution , the effects that they have on people, and what is being (or not being) done to correct the problem.
