    Poland's Geography
    Cultivated and Captivating

Poland anchors the center of the European continent, with an area of 312,683 square km including about 500 km of coastline along the Baltic Sea to the north. Seven countries border Poland to the west, the Polish/German border runs along the Oder and Neisse rivers. To the north, Poland is bordered by Russia; to the east by Lithuania, Belarus and the Ukraine; and in the south by the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Sudeten and Carpathian Mountains. In general, Poland is a flat country with an average height above sea level of 568 ft. Poland's climate is greatly influenced by oceanic air currents from the west, cold polar air from Scandinavia and Russia, as well as warmer, sub-tropical air from the south. Most of Poland's land is used for agriculture. Poland's topography played a major role in its history, as its flat terrain and the lack of natural barriers on the North European Plain provided no resistance to military advances and made these borders difficult to defend. INTRODUCTION
Background: Poland gained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite country following the war, but one that was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of an independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. Complete freedom came with the implosion of the USSR in 1991. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, boosting hopes for early acceptance to the EU. Poland joined the NATO alliance in 1999.

    http://www.pan.net/polemb/english/info/page1.htm
Facts about Poland: Geography The Republic of Poland (Rzeczpospolita Polska) is one of the largest countries in Central Europe, bordering Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany. Its northern frontier on the Baltic Sea gives it easy access to Scandinavian and North Sea ports. Poland's shape is roughly square, measuring 400-440 miles across. The capital, Warsaw, is situated in the center of the country. Poland's surface area of 120,727 sq. miles ranks eighth in Europe. The country lies almost entirely on the North European Plain and is a land of gentle relief, rarely rising above 350 feet except along the southern border with the Sudety and Carpathian mountain ranges. Rysy is the highest mountain peak, 8200 feet above sea level. Approximately one-fifth of the land is maintained as pasture and meadows. About 27% of the total area is covered by forest. The longest rivers which cross the country northward are the Vistula (667 miles in length) in the center, and the Odra (530 miles) which flows along Poland's western border. designed by Internet Polska

GEOGRAPHY OF POLAND In With the Baltic Sea to the north, Poland shares its other borders with Germany (specifically, the former East Germany), the Czech Republic, Russia, the Ukraine, Slovakia, Belorussia, and Lithuania. Aside from mountainous southern and southeastern border regions, Poland is generally flat. Given its consistently level topography, Poles can rightfully boast of their country's great tracts of arable land. Historically, though, the forbears of modern day Poles rarely passed quiet, pastoral lives. Invading armies made easy inroads into Polish territory because of the flatness of the North European plain. Poland's centrality on the European continent—combined with its gentle topography—has put it at the crossroads of many conflicts over the centuries; consequently, its population has been periodically ravaged and its borders changed, according to the desires of the victorious invaders. Though the great North European plain may not attract travelers in search of rugged altitudes, Poland has more natural lakes than any other country except Finland. Several rivers also meander through Poland's countryside.
