Garden Layout - Plants - Wildflowers There isn't really the space in my garden for a bed or a patch devoted to native wildflowers, but, as these are something of a passion for Mrs Taz, I usually grow a mixture of them in a trough or a planter. Rather than planting a patch of, say, cornflowers, I mix the seeds and scatter them, so that it's a complete surprise as to what flowers where. Some of the seed is from proprietary mixtures, so half the time, I don't even know what it is I've planted, but that merely adds to the surprise. The mixture currently includes the following species....
  • Aquilegia vulgaris
  • Calendula
  • Cornflowers
  • Lathyrus sylvestris (Wood Pea)
  • Nigella (Love-in-a-mist)
  • Night-scented Stock
  • Poppies
  • Viola riviniana

64. Native Plants For A California Garden, Easy Landscape Design With Native Plants.
A plant selector for California native plants. A designers helper for California native plants, wildflowers.
http://www.mynativeplants.com
Native plants for a California garden, gardening and landscaping with native plants.
This software is provided free by Las Pilitas Nursery, with nurseries in Santa Margarita and Escondido
Version 1.2
The mynativeplants.com program is designed to point out native plants that will work in your area and native plants to match each garden plot in your landscape.
T o get the full benefit, design the garden using the full search for each garden plot and then filter the resulting native plants by using the hyperlinks to read about each and print out the ones you think will work for your garden design.
The goal is to empower you with knowledge of native plants in a broad manner so you can make decisions about your garden, a native hillside, or native landscape design.
"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe." John Muir (1869)
A fter almost 30 years of fighting with native plants, planting hundreds of gardens, we've come to the conclusion that James Lovelock's Gaia does have meaning as does Clements 'complex organism'. The 'whole' concept can be very useful in putting together a small scale system in a garden. We've observed it in many environments, many gardens, landscapes, and ecosystems. Put the whole together right, and the garden becomes self-sustaining and stable.
We've set this up so landscape contractors, homeowners, gardeners, landscape architects, planners and even other nurseries can feel comfortable using native plants in a garden, landscape or restoration.

Our native plant of the week is Highbush Cranbery The highbush cranberry is a native shrub of easy culture which combines the advantages of edible fruit with year-round ornamental value. Although the common name for this plant describes it as a cranberry, it is actually a member of the botanical family known as Caprifoliaceae, and is more closely related to a honeysuckle, than to the cranberries eaten with the traditional Thanksgiving turkey. OntarioWildflowers.com is a privately run website whose goal is to promote backyard habitats for our native flora and fauna.

    Prairie Wildflowers
Interest in prairie wildflowers has increased in recent years due to increasing public interest in environmental isssues and ecology. Before 1870, the prairie region once occupied over one-third of the land area of the United States. At present, only one-half of one percent of those areas remain. Recent legislation has mandated a minimum use of wildflowers by state highway departments on new landscape plantings. Many deep-rooted prairie grasses and showy flowers (called forbs) may meet the criteria of aesthetics, erosion control, and cost effectiveness needed for establishment on tough sites.
