The "other" side of planning, of course, is the actual preparation for teaching academic content. Planning lessons, weekly units, and an entire school year is a big task. Many of us find it the most intellectually intensive activity of teaching and a tremendous creative outlet. Good planning takes practice. It's the key to professionalism. When you plan, you use your professional judgment to match ideas, activities, and materials with students' interests and abilities. Planning is not simply a matter of making a "To Do" list. Planning is deciding when, where, why, and how a certain lesson is taught. Couldn't a good teacher just "wing it"? No way. A plan offers direction, confidence, and security. And plans help you use classroom time more efficiently by reducing confusion and wasted time. Generally, the more thoroughly you plan an activity, the less time it takes to complete it. What Experienced Planners Do In studies at Michigan State University, researcher Christopher Clark and his colleagues found that experienced teachers generally use a four-step process when planning an activity:

Planning Guide Activity Ideas for Health Fairs
Activity-oriented health fairs inspire more learning than a passive look-and-see health fair. Topic choices are limitless. Your health fair planning committee can help choose topics. Ask participant agencies to come prepared to provide a hands-on teaching activity in their booth. These booths should provide something to do that will teach at least one important point about their subject. Here are some activity-oriented, hands-on ideas for your health fair. Many of these ideas came from Luwana Rider Janet Pollard , Extension Health Associate, added others and organized the information.
Plan a County Extension Booth
This booth can offer information on various Extension programs and provide sign-up sheets for Extension activities, such as letter series and workshops. This would be a good place to have participants to sign in and register for door prizes. Keep participants’ names from these door prize registrations for your mailing lists, too. Other ideas include having a fact sheet noting Extension accomplishments in your county. Have a sheet noting upcoming programs you will be offering.

This initiative was seen as a vehicle whereby state agencies could consolidate and integrate the planning, development and financing of services to better serve children and families. By partnering with state departments, our community has been able to help families and children succeed. Caring Communities is currently working within 13 neighborhoods that encompass ten elementary schools and three middle schools. Neighborhoods work together to achieve the following Core Results: Through community collaboration, Caring Communities has been able to meet the needs of families through facilitation of initiatives like these: Early Childhood Programs

20 Elements of Success
Checklist for Starting Are parents qualified to teach their children? You know your children better than anyone else and have the deepest love and concern for them. You also have the most direct and long-term responsibility for your children before God, who commands parents to teach their children His Word, the most important thing they will learn (Deut. 6:6, 7). Educationally, one-to-one tutoring has many advantages over a classroom where one teacher tries to meet the needs of many children at different learning levels. You do not need to know everything in order to teach. Your example and enthusiasm in learning with your children will motivate and encourage them. Dr. Brian Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute (Box 13939, Salem OR 97309), conducted an analysis in 1994 of the standardized test results for 16,320 home-school children nationwide. He found these children to average at or above the 73rd percentile in all subject areas. (The national average is the 50th percentile.) A 1997 nationwide study, Strengths of Their Own, by Dr. Ray demonstrated that there is little relationship between the parents' education levels and their children's scores. He also found that whether the parent is a certified teacher or not has no bearing on a child's scores.

School starts in a few weeks and I have begun lesson planning for my classroom. But input from others would be really great. The scenario: I teach basic mathematics to 9-12 graders in a high school mainstream program. The objective is to teach students basic computational skills. The primary objective is to get them to pass the high school graduation requirement test, which presents real life mathematical problem solving via word problems. My students really struggle with reading as it is, and to read to determine the computation process needed to find the answer is more difficult. I have taught this class last year with some success but ideas are welcomed. (A few kids passed this test.) Also, I will be teaching Educational and Career Planning. This course I have never taught and have a minimal amount of teaching materials to use.

V. CAREER PLANNING
The College Career Development Center
The Career Development Staff is professionally trained to assist students in their career decision making, career planning and job search throughout college. Student questions and needs are diverse and so are the services. The staff strives to provide the best possible service regardless of career interests or college major. The Center's philosophy is to support students in their decisions. Staff will assist students as much as possible through career counseling, workshops and support services that have been designed to work to their advantage. The bottom line; however, is that the responsibility for making decisions, planning, securing employment, gaining admission to graduate school or otherwise planning for life after graduation rests with the student. Career Development services are available on a walk-in or appointment basis and staff are conducting workshops on a regular basis. Students are invited to visit the Career Library, use computers available for resumes and cover letters, schedule time for DISCOVER (a computer-based career guidance system), or register to receive job vacancy listings. Staff are also reaching out to potential employers and graduate school programs to increase opportunities for students. Students need to take the initiative to contact the Center. Career issues affect everyone and are an important consideration for most students; however, it is easy to procrastinate given the demands and diversity of college life.

Finding out about local people involved with different aspects of decision-making and action related to sustainable development contributes to both ESD and citizenship. Schools can: take pupils to visit local businesses, charities, old people's homes or ethnic centres; invite representatives of local organisations or pressure groups into school to be interviewed or contribute to a discussion relevant to many areas of the curriculum. Questions may be prepared about: the roles that interviewees have; what the environmental, social and economic implications of the organisation's contributions are; how decisions are taken; whether those affected by the decisions are able to influence the outcomes; how the pupils can support the organisation's work or influence decisions. As well as benefiting from local expertise, the school can act as a catalyst for local sustainability initiatives , for example: by offering premises and computers to the local library service for evening use, reducing the need to travel; by acting as a drop-off point for a vegetable box scheme;

Applying and choosing a graduate school

Graduate work is for those who enjoy going to school, like an unstructured, open-ended research environment, and who wish to follow career paths that require an advanced degree.
Many graduate programs are available for chemistry students: chemistry polymer science chemical physics biotechnology library science chemical education biochemistry materials science environmental chemistry food science geochemistry computational chemistry chemical engineering pharmaceutical chemistry clinical chemistry You should figure on two years for a masters degree, and four-to-six years for a Ph.D.
For a Ph.D., you will take courses and written and oral exams, do lots of research, write a thesis, and defend your work at a final oral presentation. There is always a demand for good graduate students. C of C students with chemistry grades in the "B" range should not have difficulty being accepted to the schools of their choice. In recent years C of C students have been accepted to many regional and nationally respected programs including: Clemson U of South Carolina Emory Georgia Tech ... NC State Graduate students in chemistry are almost always supported by teaching or research fellowships and receive (directly or indirectly) stipends for tuition throughout their Ph.D. program. Be careful when comparing schools in terms of regional cost of living and tuition wavers. Usually students net $12-14,000 after tuition. Expect to teach two to three labs your first year and to do 40 hours or more of lab research work in later years in exchange for your stipend. Graduate programs in chemistry are heavily research oriented.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Science fair projects have long been familiar events in schools throughout the country, and they have come to represent science in action, science as inquiry. The investigatory aspect of science fair projects fits wellwith current reform efforts guided by such publications as "Science for All Americans," "Benchmarks for Scientific Literacy," and the "National Science Education Standards." Classroom science is steadily being transformed into a process-driven, inquiry-based area of study, and science fair projects provide additional opportunities for students to become personally and directly involved in scientific investigation. Elementary schools participate in science fairs for a variety of reasons: to stimulate student interest in science, to provide students with opportunities for research and active inquiry, to publicly recognize students' completed projects, and to provide students with opportunities to share their work (Perry,1995). There are many variations in format, but the primary components of a science fair project typically include an investigation, a written research report, a visual display, an oral presentation, and some sort of assessment. Learning some scientific facts or principles is a valuable fringe benefit for students doing projects, but the primary objective for science project work is to teach students to think (Tant, 1992, p.5.)

Three distinct services, digital television will allow KNME-TV to "multicast," to offer four or more programs simultaneously; "datacast," to include downloadable graphics and text in the broadcast of a program; and to present programs in "high-definition television" with wide-screen pictures and CD quality sound to rival movie theaters.
This year, KNME-TV and New Mexico's two other public television stationsKENW/Portales and KRWG/Las Cruceswere included as part of a $58 million general obligation bond for higher education on the ballot in November 2000. "The KNME-TV Digital Road Show" visited communities in the viewing area to tell about the new technology. KNME-TV's engineers were busy planning for the conversion and applying for federal matching grants to fund DTV.
Despite these activities, the station did not neglect its other responsibilities to the people of New Mexico. KNME-TV continues to be a respected producer of television programs and the source for quality programs from the Public Broadcasting Service. This year, the station expanded its educational service with more Ready to Learn service workshops to help parents, teachers, and care providers to teach children learning and reading skills.
